I only really ever see or hear mariachi bands during weddings, quinceaneras or to serenade somone on their birthday. I would say that most Mexicans don't even own mariachi music.

Mariachi music is still popular, don't kid yourself. Not a huge fan but whenever Mexicans get together, Mariachi music is not far behind. If you're Mexican, you must be like 3rd generation that doesn't even speaks Spanish.
