He never played for Miami. As far as I can tell, no other franchise ever retired a number for a player that didn't play for them. Anyone have the inside story on why that happened?

Many peers, coaches and execs respected Jordan. But Riles was truly captivated by his career.
I remember Pat speaking on MJ's impact globally, and delving into his case for GOAT. He wanted a way to 'honor the best' so then decided to hang MJ's jersey from the rafters.
An opposing team retiring your number is the epitome of respect.
