View Full Version : If after adding a player to a team it's defensive rating rank jumps 20 spots...

...can we say that that player has a tremendous defensive impact?

If everything else is exactly equal then sure.

Rarely, if ever, is that the case.

Weaker offensive players require more offensive help..

So it's actually easier to build a defensive team around great offensive players like Curry and Reggie Miller because you can surround them with cheap defenders - they can carry the scoring load and don't need as much offensive help.

Otoh, lesser offensive players that can't carry the scoring load need more offensive help, so it's harder to build a good defensive team around them.. Ball-dominators fit this mold since they can't carry the scoring load against top teams (too ball-dominant) and therefore need more offensive help.. Expert jumpshooters are the opposite (they can carry the scoring load with sufficient brand to beat top teams, so they can win with less offensive help)

You sound like you build teams on NBA 2K.

Why did bad defenders like Reggie Miller, Curry and Kyrie have #1 defensive teams?

It's because you can surround great offensive players with cheap defenders, while weaker offensive players that can't carry the scoring load (ball-dominators) need all-time scoring help like Kareem, Wade, AD, Kyrie, or MJ (in pippen's case)

This is historical record but the mainstream media doesn't understand basketball well enough to arrive at this obvious conclusion and see the historical record for what it is (it's easier to build great defensive team around a great offensive player that can carry scoring load)

Are any of you aware of cases where a team has improved 20 spots or more in defensive rating after a year?

The Spurs went from 29th to 2nd in 97-98

Damn, Tim Duncan led the league in defensive win shares as a rookie.

Technically they jumped that high because they added both Duncan and Robinson. Robinson missed almost all of the season in 1997, playing only 6 games.

Oh I know.

But the question was posed without context so I didn't feel a need to add any.

You know got damn well that is not the same team that was good after that. I’m not positive that 8 of them are still in the nba. Being added to a team with the same logo doesn’t mean you were added to the same team of basketball players. The “_____ added _____ when he got there” is almost always posted without context and while ignoring other changes and this is as bad as it gets. Stop with this stupid bullshit. We have enough troll accounts to deal with. We don’t need a psycho troll for every great player.

Just my opinion, but Reggie was a great shooter, not a great offensive player. Great offensive players can get their own shot and create their own shot, along with play making. Reggie couldn’t do that.

Robinson, Bowman, Spellman and Evans aren't in the NBA but if I'm not mistaken the rest still are. Funny thing is the roster the next year apart from Steph was arguably worse.

We as fans definitely need to value players' defensive ability more when analyzing them.

A more holistic appreciation of defensive impact also needs to be developed.

Idk about adding...but the Cavs lost a guy in 2011 and went from 6th and 7th offensively and defensively to 29th in both.

Order matters for this question. Another team I could point to for example went from 2nd in Net Rating to 30th if we are doing it in reverse order.

You could not have thought of this as a thread idea to suck Curry’s dick.

I would literally bring this up as an argument AGAINST the shit you imply.

And by the way, you’re not baiting anybody into a dumber position than this thread, just say it, don’t imply it, lol.

Curry is one of the best defensive point guards in the league and the stats and eye test back it up :applause:
