I'm sure you have. I remember years ago when you would google a controversial topic, you would get results from different perspectives on the issue, nowadays when you google a controversial topic, you get multiple results, but all of them pretty much agreeing with each other. It's honestly quite scary.

A handful of big companies have completely ruined the internet, unless you use Tor etc. It reminds me of commercial media channels in general now. Just in the general sense of control and making life seem more bland and negative than it is. YouTube search has gone to shit also. Usually full of news clips, music or influences pulling stupid faces instead of the specific thing I'm looking for. Not to mention comments that aren't even bad being auto deleted.

You find the result of typing some words on a search engine “quiet scary”?? Have you ever crossed the street when the light was red, did you wet your pants?

he obviously meant 'scary' as in unsettling. That an anonymous algorithm, established by a handful of technocratic elites who abide by a neoliberal agenda, controls the entire flow of information online should be unsettling to you.

Not unsettling to me at the least. I don’t have Facebook/TikTok etc. I don’t search for the “truth” online, there are many sources for information and you can use your head to dissect it how you want. Propaganda and misinformation has been around since way before the internet, if people like being spoon fed information then they get what they deserve.

If you type in hunter Biden laptop there are a bunch of articles from mainstream (left and right) media where you can find out pretty much all the details.

If you want to say that the White House swept it under the rug and the media (including social media) covering this administration was complicit, that’s a different story and one I can’t argue against.

That's not how google or any search engine works. They don't have the search results on their servers. Can they filter inputs and manipulate the results shown? Of course. They can and they do, but different engines filter out different stuff. Put the same phrase into google, bing, duckduck and check out the results.

jstern

They do. That is known. For certain things they don't have to do much, for example this video.

https://youtu.be/otbCditKNEI

Most major news media will not cover that. So if you just simply Google AOC, or Alexandra Ocasio Cortez, you're going to see other current news about her. And that's simply because Google gives priority to corporate news media. Now if you know about the incident and Google something like, "Aoc heckled." But you already knew about it.

Then stuff like Hunter Biden laptop was heavily censored, because it was deemed to have all the "earmarks of classic Russian disinformation."

The Corona stuff, forget about it. I had to use Duckduckgo.com, but eventually that got compromised.

Russia vs Ukraine, you will only get the corporate media narrative. Putin invaded Ukraine out of the blue. No actual report or translation of Putin speechs, the things that happened the past few decades that led to the special operation, and so forth. And unless you're familiar with the other side, Corona, Russia, AOC, the average person will not be aware of any type of censoring. Then you get a Blade.

Resuts seem to be so whitewashed and standardized nowadays. No bold opinions, nothing raw, rare.

Same goes for youtube. You used to be able to find sick ass documentaries or personal creative content, now search a mystery or conspiracy or even historical topic, you get the 2-3 state-affliated channes videos on it, super bland. Just a wikipedia voiceover basically.

In addition to this, I know when you used to google deaths, you woud get actual raw pictures of the corpse, autopsy, etc.

I looked up Tupacs death a couple days ago, you wont find a single thing.

Anyone growing up today might never actually see Tupacs dead body lol. And the wounds.

I scrolled all the way down and you can still see those pictures in the preview for another search that is similar, but once you click on it, say "Tupac autopsy", you wont find it there either.

Its all white-washed and hidden.

The actually interesting information is no longer available to users.

Same for cool, old blogs, rare articles, etc.

I’ve noticed weird stuff with google a lot over the past few years.

Also what has made it worse is a lot more trash content to sift through. I remember playing MGS2 and thinking how schizophrenic it sounded when they talked about the war of information and disinformation. And there will be a point where there is so much disinformation (or more less nefariously just lazy and incomplete information that has been copy pasted ad infinitum) where it makes it literally next to impossible to find the real deal. Trying to find routine facts that should be easily accessible turns into a needle in a haystack scenario.

Nope, I stopped exclusively using Google years ago because of all the private tracking they do through their search engine, software and phones.

I use SearXNG (https://searx.space/).
