NEW YORK — Former NBA player Ben Gordon is facing assault charges for allegedly punching his son at a New York airport.

The alleged assault occurred Monday evening at LaGuardia Airport. According to the Queens district attorney’s office, witnesses including an American Airlines employee saw Gordon yell at his son and punch him several times in the face after the boy dropped a book on the ground.

Gordon later confirmed to police that it was his son. Gordon also allegedly assaulted officers as they attempted to handcuff him and put him in a patrol car.

At an arraignment Tuesday night, Gordon was charged with offenses including assault, resisting arrest, contempt and child endangerment. He was ordered to return to court Friday.

According to a criminal complaint, Gordon’s son has an order of protection against him dating from 2018 that forbids Gordon from “committing physical abuse, harassment, or the interference with personal liberty,” and prohibits him from removing the boy from Illinois.

A message was left Wednesday with an attorney representing Gordon.

The 39-year-old, who played collegiately at the University of Connecticut, was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 2004 and played 11 seasons in the NBA with Chicago, Detroit, Charlotte and Orlando, most recently in the 2014-15 season with the Magic. He was voted NBA Sixth Man of the Year in 2005.

Gordon's rookie season was 2004-05, yet he seems like ancient history.

he was billed as the next Chauncey Billups during the 2004 NBA Draft. Sucks he signed with the Pistons, and his numbers regressed.

He outdid anything billups ever did on offense in the playoffs but he was trash on defense though

Wasn’t trash on defense. Actually one of the rare guys to physically matchup with athletic peak Wade in the 06 playoffs.

He and Kirk gave DWade possibly the only playoff problems in his entire prime.

He also destroyed the Celtics in that 2009 series. Dude was cooking Ray Allen.

A great duel between those two players though.

Ben Gordon was quite talented. Such a smooth skillset, beautiful midrange game. Demar Derozan lite but better on D.

No. Derozan is much better on both sides of the ball. Handle, jumper, finisher and defender.

Career

Derozan - 21/4/4
Gordon - 15/3/3

Gordon was putrid defensively. Way more under sized for a SG.

And no, was never better than Chauncey Billups as a total player in any capacity. They were similar caliber scorers but Billups was twice as good as a playmaker and running the team. And a way better defender.

Billups - 15/3/5
Gordon - 15/3/3

Gordon was pretty good, but you guys are getting carried away comparing him to Billups or DeRozan. He was never an all-star level player, just a great scorer with a complete skillset in offense. Too bad his career went downhill after leaving the Bulls, and he retired quite young, actually. I hope he sorts out his personal problems.

It’s almost like they never watched or don’t remember accurately. BG is no where close to Derozan. 5-6 ppg difference? And that’s BG’s most redeeming aspect brought to the court? Like come on. If that 2009 Bulls team where BG had the series of his life had Derozan instead? They could’ve easily been in the Finals.

BG was not on their level however what tilts the scale a little was his 4th quarter production, he had some big close out games for Chicago - jumper after jumper.

I don't know how Demar is on D now but he was trash with the Raptors. I never said Gordon was on his level just a similar skillset relying a lot on his midrange J.

He reminded me of Vinnie Johnson when he played.

Ben Gordon was like a more explosive, British Willie Green.

A modern equivalent, exactly. He oddly didn’t have great handle, especially for his size. Kind of sloppy.

Eric Gordon was like Ben Gordon on steroids.
