It probably has something to do with his father. Given that he used to rape Michael's sister I would assume MJ suffered some psychological damage. Who knows what else happened.

Genuinely seems like a good dude. People can disagree with some of his political beliefs, but it doesn't change the fact that he's done a lot for the community and has always stayed out of trouble, despite how large his status has been for decades and how much adversity he's faced. And like you mentioned, it seems like he's a really good dad and he's been with the same woman since before he got into the NBA.
