View Full Version : MJ is a better shooter than Lebron

So dumb people trying to claim Lebron as the better shooter. MJ is far better at mid-range and free throws. Lebron has a slight advantage at threes. But neither Bron or MJ can be considered "good" three point shooters so it's not an argument really for either of them.

This is how you grade them out. C basically means average.

Mid-Range: MJ A+, Lebron C

Free Throw: MJ B+, Lebron C-

Threes: MJ C-, Lebron C

Of course there could be some wiggle room with these grades, but that's basically how their shooting capabilities are.

Like it or not young fans barely consider a 14 foot turnaround to be shooting. Derozan has been wet from midrange and making 85% of his free throws forever but we have all heard claims he isn’t a shooter. People will both say he’s a midrange master…and not a shooter. It’s weird but it’s how it is.

Guys go whole years and make like 15 midrange shots. I think Harden had a year he scored 30 a game and didn’t make 15 midrange shots. To modern fans it’s like…a runner or something. A floater.

They don’t see guys like that as being shooters regardless of what evidence you want to lay out and it’s only going to get worse. Even guys they think can shoot like Dirk? In their heads Dirk shot a lot more outside than he did in reality. They feeeeeel like it was a 7 footer wetting a bunch of threes when Dirk was taking 2 a game when he was mvp. For most of his career Dirk took less threes than Giannis has the last 3-4 years. But people feeeeeeel like he was an outside shooter.

Maybe a racial thing. Can’t say. But the exceptions like that are rare. Generally if you aren’t making a bunch of threes people don’t consider you a real shooter. Jordan had full 82 game seasons making like 10-25 threes.

Modern fans are never going to respect that no matter what any of us have to say about it. A kid from this era seeing Jordan had an mvp year where he played 40 minutes a night and all 82 games and made 7 threes on 13% is not gonna consider that person a shooter.

They just won’t. They might acknowledge he was good but they will never consider him a good shooter for the rest of time. Lebron makes a respectable number. Enough for modern fans not to say he can’t shoot.

Jordan just didn’t. We can talk amongst ourselves about why that shouldn’t be seen that way but it is and there’s nothing we can really do about it. Fans never understand why the old guys didn’t play the way their favorite to do. And it goes all across sports. People would laugh at the numbers of every quarterback before this era other than maybe Dan Marino or Dan Fouts. They don’t care that they weren’t asked to sling it all over and play spread offenses like college.

You put up 3200 yards 16 tds and 12 picks you aren’t good compared to modern guys.

You make 9 threes in a season you couldn’t shoot compared to modern guys.

We don’t have to accept that it’s true but we do have to accept there’s nothing we can do about the belief that it is.

Historically foul shooting has a high correlation to 3 pt shooting. Jordan shot 83.5% from the line for his career.

In this era good foul shooters are encouraged to shoot 3s. Brook Lopez didn't shoot 3s at all his first 8 seasons, but he shot 80% from the foul line. Sure enough he eventually started shooting a lot of 3s. Of course he wasn't shooting a lot of midrange shots like Jordan used to so he wasn't used to taking jumpers, making the transition tougher for Brook.

lebron became a solid shooter and he can really get hot but he was never and will never be a great shooter. it was never his strength, it was a weakness that he got rid of.

jordan is a great shooter very consistent from his spots.

yup. derozan and dirk are both great shooters. the free-throw line is the best overall indicator of shooting ability IMO. some players can master certain shots, even deep threes, but again, the freethrow line overall is the best indicator.

anyone that can shoot mid 80s from the stripe is a probably a great shooter overall.

Foolish jordon's non-pee-wee line 3 point shooting for the majority of his career is more in the D+ to F- range. :oldlol:
Anyway, Brook Lopez is a better shooter than Shaq. And Kyle Korver is a better shooter than either LeBron or Foolish jordon. What's you point?

My point is exactly what the OP says. I see a lot of Lebron stans say Bron is a better shooter than Jordan, which isn't true.

Lebron is probably my favorite player of all time, but I'm not an insecure stan and can see Bron's game objectively.

I will also say it's clear Lebron is not a BAD shooter either. Lebron haters try to make him out to be like Giannis or Ben Simmons lol. Bron is clearly just a solid but very streaker shooter from the floor. He is also a slightly below average free throw shooter.

Basically Lebron not being an elite shooter from ANYWHERE on the floor is why so there is a sizeable chunk of people who claim Kobe is better than Lebron. I disagree with that, but I see where people are coming from.

Kobe absolutely maxed out most of his scoring/shooting skill set (except threes just like Bron/MJ), where as Bron has not maxed out his scoring skill set, so people will "Respect" Kobe's scoring abilities more.
