Bill Clinton was the last president to bring the deficit into surplus. Then Bush ran the economy into the ground with 2 wars and a massive recession that took years to dig from.

If we look at spending, Republicans in office spend as much, if not more, than the Democrat presidents. It's been true across the last 50 years going back to the early 1970s. Reagan doubled the deficit. First Bush pushed it to the record at the time. Clinton brought it down into 128 billion surplus in 2001. Second Bush cut taxes significantly, increased spending significantly, started 2 wars, and oversaw financial crash (drove deficit past a trillion). Obama had to contain the crash and in his 2nd term still brought down the deficit to half left by Bush. Trump came in, gave massive tax cuts to the rich/corporations, increased military spending quite a bit, and brought the deficit back up to a trillion (that was before COVID struck).
