. Everyone is familiar with teams letting the ball roll up the floor in the final seconds of games in order to save time, but why have the Celtics started doing it with minutes remaining? In short, they've discovered a loop hole in the way the clock operates. Prior to the final two minutes, the game clock runs continuously on made baskets. However, the shot clock for a possession does not begin until the ball is touched. In theory, then, a team could keep the ball for minutes at a time if they are not forced to pick it up and initiate the shot clock.
The Celtics have figured this out and have been using it to their advantage to waste time when they have a lead in the fourth quarter. On this example, Gordon's dunk happens at 5:16 and the foul to stop play is at 5:06; 10 valuable seconds rolled off that the Nuggets may have needed if they had attempted a comeback.
While the Nuggets never got close enough after that point for it to matter, the Celtics' trick has been successful in helping them stave off a comeback attempt already this season. Going back to the first week, they were desperately trying to hold off the Miami Heat (https://www.cbssports.com/nba/teams/MIA/miami-heat/) in an Eastern Conference finals rematch. Marcus Smart (https://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/basketball/players/2135563/marcus-smart/) used the maneuver twice in the final five minutes to drain 27 seconds off the clock.
In another early-season win against the Orlando Magic (https://www.cbssports.com/nba/teams/ORL/orlando-magic/), they were using the ruse so successfully that the referees got confused and stopped the game. After Paolo Banchero (https://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/basketball/players/26775953/paolo-banchero/)scored a layup, Smart let the ball drift for 15 seconds and may have gotten even more time off the clock if the refs didn't blow the whistle. In that game, the Celtics survived with a six-point win, again in part due to this play.
Im reading the competition committee might do something but they can’t mid season. If you watch the Magic one the refs stopped the play while the clock was running and Smart was annoyed. It was funny to me but I guess it never had a long shelf life before people caught on. They should have saved it for the playoffs.

Yea it’s actually pretty smart. Force them to keep someone back and maybe take advantage.
The refs literally stopped the game over it.
What can you do other than make the shot clock start when the ball touches inbounds?

Haven't most teams been doing this now? I definitely feel like I've seen this almost become routine at the end of games, like when icing the kicker in football caught on.

I don’t like this analogy because there’s nothing you can really do about them calling time outs when icing. (not saying it’s a problematic strategy. it’s fine.) But with this instance in the op there are things you can do to counter it. Either do it or don’t. They shouldn’t just whine about it.

It takes a few critical steals and teams will stop doing it.

The roll to get the ball and a full shot clock yes. But rolling it in to let the clock run to prevent a comeback with 5 minutes left? I’ve never seen that.
If you don’t go get the ball they can burn almost a whole quarter without the shot clock starting. Last 2 minutes that doesn’t apply because they clock stops between plays.

Agreed. I'm sure it pisses off the NBA, but they can't do a damn thing about it. Even funnier that we're just 13 games into the season.

And annoying fans. Watching Marcus Smart and Grant Williams taking flopping to a new level has made the Celtics my second least favorite team.

Both sides should just do nothing. See how long it takes for the crowd to riot. Now that'd be worth watching.

They started booing pretty good after maybe 10 seconds.
I saw one game the Celtics did it and it was tracked and they burned like a minute of possible comeback time. It’s potentially useful if they let you do it.

It's definitely a smart tactic if you have a comfortable lead. Defenses just need to adjust. Some full-court pressure.

i’d like to see a team with somebody like Giannis or Ja just stand there as long as you’ll allow it whenever they take a double digit lead just so you have to send somebody all the way down the court who has to prevent them from getting a full head of steam, and just driving to the basket or forcing a second man to leave an open three point shooter to cut them off.
Imagine 20 plays of Giannis trying to pick it up and race 80 feet to the basket with Lopez, Middleton, Matthews, and Jrue all spotted up ready to shoot 20 feet apart and Giannis has blown by his man by halfcourt.
I just wanna see it attempted in a preseason game or something for a laugh. Ultimate 3 or layup offense.

Can the refs call a delay of game or some kind of tech for crap like that?

last night a team was up like 15 with under two minutes to go, and the game went to overtime. Leads in the NBA can evaporate almost instantly. If the other team allows you to just steal a minute or two of their potential come back Time in the second half why not do it?

Whatever it is it isn’t ring a moron as you said. It’s…kinda the opposite. If the other team will just stand there and let the clock run out when they need to score quickly it’s pretty unintelligent not to let them do it.

Sounds like it could work. Boston has used screens when doing this to protect the ball. You could set a screen and get something of a transition possession going with both corners filled
