It's just that most players suck at it today.
Ok, I'll give one thing, it's that it's easier for a wing or guard to post up, because it's easier to lean on a big guy with another big guy and not called a foul.
Luka averages 1.34 points pr. postup and then you have someone like Zion at 1.04 ppp, Sengun at 1.24 and rookie Banchero at 1.25 just to name a few that have a lot of post up possessions. These guys shoot well into the 60+ FG% on post ups.
If we compare that to spot up shooters and pick and roll ball handlers, absent a few outliers like Curry and Max Struss, there are not a lot of guys putting up 1.2 pr. possesion with high volume.
I think when the analytics nerds get around to it, they will see that the key difference between the post up and the spotup/drive-kick is that the post up is just more reliable.
You might look at PPP for PnR or Spot Up and like those numbers in general, but when it comes down to it, if you need 2 points, you have a 60% chance of a score for a good post player and only about 35% for a 3 point shot.
Luke will prove the analytics nerds wrong and lead to a reemergence of post players.
