I always have a hard time judging Tyson. He peaked during a down era in heavyweight during the mid-late 80's, on one hand he was destroying the competition, but the competition itself wasn't elite.
Once the 90's rolled around and the competition got better, he was nowhere near as dominant, Holyfield owned him.
Is that due to Tyson simply not being the same boxer once he came back from prison or did he just get exposed by better competition? In theory, the 90's should have been his era, he was still pretty young when he came back from prison.

Tyson had alot of guys mentally beat before the bell rung just off his reputation. He lost that aura of inevitability when he lost to Buster. It could also be the improved competition, but I feel like 86 to 89 Tyson would have still mostly won against the guys he lost to in the 90s, even if the matches were closely contested.

He stopped caring about boxing circa 1990 even before he went to prison
When your mind isn’t in it, you won’t be able to perform at your best
Prime Tyson under Rooney is a different boxer than the later renditions of him
