View Full Version : You said the regular season didn’t matter. The NBA heard you and solved the problem.

The Maurice Podoloff trophy! Presented to the team with the best regular season record in the nba at the end of the season. I assume they have tie breakers…..

I suppose the teams that have never even won their conference can shoot for something to put in their trophy case. Clippers, Nuggets, Memphis, Hornets, Pelicans, and Twolves…I’m looking at you.

Everyone else would at least have an East or west winner trophy to display.

This is something that players will not care about until the last few games of the season unless there are financial incentives involved. Even then, they might not ever care at all.

The NBA has an uncanny ability to add things to the league that nobody asked for or remotely gives a shit about. The midseason tournament, the conference finals MVP’s, while this one is arguably the most pointless of them all, and something you could literally just look up at the end of the season.

Everyone will care about this just as much as they care about the mid-season tourney.

They should just make 2 seasons in a year. Oct-Dec would be world cup style tournament with group stages. Jan-Apr would be regular season and then playoff till June as usual.

HCA is already a strong enough incentive for the league-best record; if teams aren't already motivated for that, they probably couldn't care less about this tawdry trophy. It's not like it'll add much more recognition to the distinction, either; everyone already keeps tabs on it via the standings, and it only takes a once-over Wikipedia search to look it up for previous seasons.

Its real purpose seems to be business-driven: the NBA is trying to mirror the business model of soccer as they're also doing with the mid-season tournament. By adding more recognizable elements from the most popular international sport, they're probably hoping to expand their foreign fanbase further. The award is completely meaningless to long-time and hardcore NBA fans, but it might actually attract new fans at the end of the day—which the NBA values above all.

A trophy for a regular season is actually a good idea. They need a few key players to come out in support of it though.

The regular season really is too long and pointless

The older I get, the less fvcks I give...there's just way more interesting shit in life and even other sport

Why change what's not broken? Besides, you would not be able to fit in 82 game season into Jan-Apr anyways without having a sh!tton of back-to-backs.

Just make the season 60 games. That simple.

Of course the money makers wouldnt want that.

The play in has made the regular season more important. Teams want to be in the top 6 to avoid it and teams that have little chance for the 8 seed have something to play for at the end of the season.

I recall in an old hoops film from the 1960s they called the MVP or all-star MVP trophy the Maurice Podoloff trophy as well. Can’t remember which it was but obviously it’s now changed
