NBA Champion and long time coach Paul Silas has passed away at age 79
2x NBA Champion, 3x All-Star, & long time coach Paul Silas has passed away at age 79.
Former Seattle Supersonic enforcer, Paul Silas — a three-time NBA champion and two-time All-Star — has passed away at 79, as per Bob Ryan.
Silas was a fierce competitor and beloved figure. He coached several teams, including Cleveland to start LeBron James’ career.
His son, Stephen, is the Rockets coach.
During his 16 seasons in the NBA, the 79-year-old is remembered as a tenacious rebounder and defender. He was selected for the All-Star game twice, and the All-Defensive team five times. Additionally, he was a member of three championship teams, including the Celtics in 1974 and 1976, as well as the Super Sonics in 1979.
Following his career at Creighton, in which he led the NCAA in rebounding, Silas was selected by the St. Louis Hawks in the second round of the NBA draft in 1964. In 1969, he was dealt to the Suns, and then in 1972, he was dealt to the Celtics. He finished his career with the Nuggets and the Sonics. Silas played in a total of 1,254 games during his career and finished each contest with an average of 9.4 points and 9.9 rebounds.
After his playing career was over, he transitioned into coaching, first holding the position of head coach for the San Diego Clippers from 1980 to 1983 and then going on to hold the same position with the Charlotte Hornets, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Charlotte Bobcats before calling it quits in 2012. Stephen Silas, the head coach of the Rockets, is named after his father, Silas.
