They are 11-6 against teams that are above .500, which is the 3rd best in the league. However they are 2-7 against below .500 teams which is by far the worst in the NBA. Is there a motivation problem for Mavericks? Or is the sample size too small to judge yet?

They play to their competition based on that.

Mavs only win when Luka scores 30+ aka when he plays out of his mind.

Luka probably tries to conserve some energy playing against bad teams, but the rest of the Mavs are so trash they are literally worse than any other team in the league.
