View Full Version : Allen Iverson: "It’s Mike, and it’s Kobe, and it’s everybody else."

"A.I. figured no one would ever be able to match Jordan’s skill and competitive fire on the court, but that changed when he met Kobe Bryant. In a recent interview with Vernon Maxwell on the MaXed Out podcast, Iverson said Bryant was the only player he ever competed against who was in the same realm as Jordan.

“Just a colossal amount of respect and admiration [for Kobe],” Iverson said. “The dude was a monster. I hadn’t seen anything like that besides “Black Jesus.” It was kinda like a spitting image. He could affect the game just like my hero. If anybody knows me, Black Jesus is everything to me. He was the one who gave me the vision. He was the one who made me want to be Allen Iverson on that dance floor. Kobe was just the same.”

Iverson would never put anyone ahead of Jordan. His affinity for the Chicago Bulls legend can be traced back to his teenage years, so not even Bryant could overtake his hero growing up.

But in terms of A.I.’s favorite players of all time, Bryant is the only one who deserves to be on Jordan’s tier.

I always talk about my favorite players, and I’ll never put nobody before Mike because of what Mike did for me. I wanted to actually be like Mike. He meant that much to me, and he’s a big reason for me being the Hall of Fame basketball player that I was. But I’ll never put nobody second besides Kobe. It’s Mike, and it’s Kobe, and it’s everybody else.

I love Allen Iverson as a player, but Kobe is not a top 5 player of all time. Guy only had 1 MVP in 20 years.

the mvp is voted on by the media. they have extreme bias and are not the people who determine all time greatness

which 5 is better

- Kobe ( 1 mvp )
- Shaq ( 1 mvp )
- Hakeem ( 1 mvp )
- Durant ( 1 mvp )
- Oscar ( 1 mvp )

or

- Nash ( 2 mvps )
- Jokic ( 2 mvps )
- Curry ( 2 mvps )
- K malone ( 2 mvps )
- M malone ( 3 mvps )

--------------------------

how about

- Jerry West ( 0 mvps )
- Elgin Baylor ( 0 mvps )
- Dwyane Wade ( 0 mvps )
- Isiah Thomas ( 0 mvps )
- John Stockton ( 0 mvps )

or

- Derek Rose ( 1 mvp )
- James hardan ( 1 mvp )
- Russell Westbrook ( 1 mvp )
- allen iverson ( 1 mvp )
- Bob cousy ( 1 mvp )

kobe is an 11 time 1st team all nba player and a 9 time 1st team all defender... both at one time were the most in nba history. he was a league mvp candidate more times than anyone except the biggest juice monkey there is... him being passed up for all but 1 award is just pure hatred for his colorado incident and feud with shaq. they also spited him for the MJ comparisons and wanted him to be pushed aside for their new guy in lebron. nobody ever heard about the "its not about the best player or best stats. its about making teammates better. defense doesn't matter" until it was steve nash standing in front of him

the all time greatest scoring season and game when adjusted for pace is held by 2006 kobe. he was the league mvp for dragging kwame and smush to the playoffs. you could also argue 2003, 2007, 2009, 2013... its all a matter of opinion on whether you value a guy taking over with a hurt teammate, or dragging bums to the playoffs or getting the 1st seed in a far superior conference or again dragging another injured roster to the playoffs and snapping his achilles in half near the very last day of the season and hitting 2 free throws on 1 leg to make it happen

theyre all great stories. but the media changed it to "best player on the best team" or "guy who makes teammates better" or "best PER".... then when westbrook won they said "oh well lets just go with a kobe award"

No, you couldn't. Kobe's arguments would range from weak to laughable for all those years you mentioned. The only one he had a legit argument for MVP was '06.

if kobe never had an argument for 2003 ( carrying the lakers with shaq injured averaging 40ppg for multiple months ) then why did jordan win it in 1988 over magic or bird with the 7th or 8th best record.. why did nash win it in 2006 with the 5th best record... why did westbrook win it in 2017 with the 10th best record... why did jokic win it in 2021 with the 6th best record. then again in 2022 with the 11th best record

and theres many other instances in which they gave it to a guy performing at a high level over guys with much better records

its all personal bias. it always has been. its a media favorite award. its completely subjective

this is what kobe was doing just to drag depleted rosters into the post season. for most legends this is an entire careers worth of games like this ( in just one season )

Kobe didn't carry shit in '03, the Lakers went 5-10 without Shaq :oldlol: Your comparisons are laughable, most of those guys had an absolutely terrible supporting cast, and even the ones who didn't like Nash & '21 Jokic still won at a 54 win pace with injuries to key players, while Kobe barely managed to win 50 with prime Shaq playing in over 80% of the games.

the worst supporting cast in nba history is literally kobes 2006 and 2007 teams

their starting lineups those 2 years had guys like kwame/smush/luke/mihm/cook

no other guy in nba history could drag that squad to the playoffs out west

lebron couldn't even get this team to the play in tournament

Nice to see you're comparing what PEAK Kobe did to 37 year old LeBron :lol

And while Kobe's '06 & '07 Lakers teams were terrible, McGrady's Orlando teams were truly the worst supporting cast for a superstar ever, and I'd say Wade's '09 & '10 Heat teams were also worse, as were the Wolves during KG's tenure outside of '04. And like Kobe they managed to take their teams to the playoffs, with KG doing it several years in a row in the West.
