Let's tally up:

Shaq:
- 4 championships
- 3 FMVPs
- 1 MVP (2 Sporting News MVPs)
- 5 Finals appearances

Duncan:
- 3 championships
- 2 FMVPs
- 2 MVPs
- 3 Finals appearances

Kobe:
- 5 championships
- 2 FMVPs
- 1 MVP
- 7 Finals appearances

Shaq was the most dominant. His first three years were stronger than anyone else's. Duncan was the most consistent. He had the Spurs in contention almost every year of the decade. Kobe was something of a mix of consistency and dominance.

While Shaq at his peak was the best player of the decade, he was frankly too irrelevant the last 3 years of the decade to get the nod imo.

It's very debatable between Duncan & Kobe, I'd give the slight nod to Duncan.

Kobe won 4 chips. One of them came in 2010.

I say Duncan was the most consistent throughout the 00's. Shaq was the most dominant, but by '06 his game dropped a considerable amount.

Yeah, I was thinking about how to deal with that? Where/when does a decade start? It's hard for me to cut-off 2009-2010 from the decade.

What help did Duncan have? Did he have a Shaq like teammate during those years? Tony Parker was the Spurs 2nd best player in the '02 series who averaged 14 ppg on 41 fg%.

Duncan took a massive dump on Kobe in '03 despite Shaq averaging 25/14/4 in that series.

Regardless, it looks like Duncan is winning this poll.

Forget the GOAT convo, Kobe wasn't even the best player of his era.

It's not out of the question, you have guys like Curry & KD quickly catching up to Kobe. Then you have guys like Giannis, Jokic, & Luka who have a real shot at Kobe. Who knows, 20 years from now Wembanyama will be in the top 5 GOAT convo. Kobe 20 years from now might be where Moses Malone is usually ranked today.

You don't think Duncan's peak coincided within the decade, and essentially all of his prime minus the '99 season? You could argue Kobe had more prime seasons (2010-13) outside the 2000's than Duncan did.

It's obviously very close between them. But a ring + FMVP + 2 top 5 MVP finishes being in a different decade shifts it ever so slightly for me.

It's a tough question actually. For one, Kobe and Shaq played together, so the question itself is unfair. Shaq definitely has it from 2000-02, though Kobe basically being a 1b in 2001 helps his case.

Duncan has it from 2003-07, I'd say. And then Kobe has 2008 and 2009. But given that Duncan basically has 5 of the 10 seasons, it's hard to say it's not Duncan.

Agreed.

I think Kobe's prime was definitely the longest, but Duncan's had a bit more impact. Not in brand or global sales, but with individual play (especially in the postseason) that contributed in team success.

Timmy's peak was even better although not quite Shaq level.

2000-2009

1999-00 is part of the 90s. there is no year 0. the start of any decade is the number 1

2010 is the 10th year of the 2000s
