View Full Version : If these stats are correct, Jerry West has the most steals in NBA history, by far.

And you post a random spreadsheet with no source. Ok.

It's accepted by most people that Jerry West would be the all-time steals leader if they tracked steals when he played. Just like most people accept Wilt or Russell would have the blocks record. You are right, it's just a random spread sheet, but when the NBA started to track steals, Jerry West at age 35 averaged 2.5 spg which is absurd, I can only imagine how many steals he was getting during his prime.

I wouldn't be surprised. In his final season where they began recording it, he averaged 2.6 SPG in just 31 minutes of action. And that was at the age of 35. What's he doing in his prime? At least 3.5-4.0 SPG.

I wonder who has the most turnovers?

If they tracked turnovers in the 60's, my guess would be Oscar Robertson.

considering the pace/horrible ball handling/talent pool I wouldn't be surprised if wilt/russell/oscar/west all averaged 6 or 7 steals a game

6'5 elgin Baylor had near 20 rebound season averages at times

the era was almost as much of a joke as today's game

Baylor would still average a high amount in any era. Barkley was 6'4" and peaked at almost 15 Rebs in a slower paced era. Look at the '69 finals where Russell and Wilt both played, each grabbing 21+ Rebs a game; Baylor averaged 10.3 Rebs. And that was at the age of 34.

The minutes are most of the difference between those top guys numbers and todays. Baylor in 63 for example put up 29/12/4 per 36. Doesn’t look too weird considering what guys like Giannis do in 30-32 minutes these days. Oscars Mvp season would be 25/9/8 in 36 instead of the 45-46 minutes he was playing then.

Baylor isn't Barkley

Barkley was a 1 of 1

Again, a 34 year old Baylor put up 10.3 Rebs in 36 minutes of action in the finals with Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain on the floor. And Barkley isn't some anomaly. Gus Johnson was 6'6". Rodman was 6'7". Marion was 6'7". Marion between 2001-08 put up 10.3 Rebs a game. So why wouldn't Baylor?

Baylor was the only black guy on the floor half of the time. stop it
