Luka and Dinwiddie always feels like an awkward fit in the starting lineup whenever I watch the Mavs. Unlike the 3/D guys whose game Luka raises, Widdie is a scorer himself and his value gets limited by Luka’s usage.

They functioned much better last year when the minutes were staggered due to Widdie coming off the bench. When they moved him to the starting lineup this year to replace Brunson I thought it was a bad idea, and body language seems to confirm this. Right now they just do the thing where they take turns and neither looks very engaged when the other has the ball.

The other thing is Spencer is more of a scorer than creator, so his “turn” doesnt get as many looks for other guys as say when Brunson took over for Luka. I think he feels rushed to get his impact in whenever he has the ball bc who knows when he’ll have it next. The chemistry is just not very good.

Meanwhile Russell apparently just “unfollowed the Wolves” on IG due to a lack of a contract extension. I feel like he fits the Mavs better as a secondary ball handler, in the Bruson role, whereas ANT KAT doesnt need someone who sets them up, they can just use Widdie’s firepower as an extra compliment. This also gives the Wolves some return for next year instead of losing DLo for nothing, while the Mavs probably welcome DLo expiring to give them some flexibility this offseason.

It seems like a rational trade to me. Your thoughts?

Nobody's chemistry with Luka is very good. That's his biggest problem.
