It's not on the refs, it's on the association.

Years ago, I remember reading an SI article from like 1987 about Rick Barry and just how hated he was by people in the NBA. The stories in that article were insane.

I agree.

Bring back pure basketball rules and officiate them strictly...that MIGHT help make the game a bit watchable again

It's got nothing to do with the players not being able to adjust.

The NBA believes individual sizzle is good for marketing, even if it's not technically within the rules, and they're right.

Old players and purists hate to see the game compromised, but owners want to make money off the mainstream appetite.

Nothing to do about it until/unless mainstream tastes change. The league is not gonna tank its ratings and revenue for the sake of the game's "integrity."

It's all fun and games until the league actually enforces palming violations 100% of the time and we start seeing players dribble like this...

Only then will fans revolt over how boring it is and the league will lose money as a result.

Rick was 100% right on that one.
And I say that as a LeBron hater.
LeBron made absolutely the right play.

Rick is also 92% right on this one.
Way too much leniency with AWKWARD TRAVELS.
Refs need to do the right thing and call them, to hell with embarrassing the star player, call the awkward travels.

Way too much leniency with MOVING SCREENS. Andrew Bogut’s moving screens were a much larger factor in Golden state’s titles than anyone wants to admit. And Steven Adams lead blocking for Westbrook, Morant and others is the major reason small slashers had so many dunks on Steven adams teams… because they have the strongest guy in the league PLOWING THRU the other teams paint defender like Gronkowski lead blocking for his running back.

The palming/carry thing, if enforced completely to the letter of the law like in the 60’s, would make the game worse and less entertaining. Palming/carry was called about right in the late 90’s and 00’s.
The palming/carry rule has to be, if the hand is totally under the ball, NOT a hesi where the players merely let the ball’s natural upward momentum and hang go unimpeded by a hand ALONGSIDE the ball. Don’t kill the hesi.

I also wouldn’t be against moving the restricted area out about 8-10”, to rebalance the drive with the 3pt shot.

You can still dribble if carry is enforced like in the 90s, watch Tim Hardaway, KJ, Mark Price, Stockton etc.

I believe in the 90s it wasn't even allowed to be full on the side of the ball, you had to be a little on top. Until Iverson and they changed it to "on the side".

I think the game gets better when you can only dribble like in the 90s, because you have to move faster, you can't size up and shimmy, you need to make quick moves and use your first step, leads to much more dynamic games.

What I liked about the 90s was exactly that, the tripple threat game, you didn't put the ball down unless you knew what to do with it, because you couldn't shimmy and carry your opponent. So the game was more team oriented and much more dynamic with quick moves.
