View Full Version : Shaq’s career FT rate was 57.8%. Whistlenis Reftokounmpo’s is 62.1% this year
I love how Embiid gets so much shit for soft calls when Gianny exists. And no he does not “get fouled on purpose” like Shaq, fouling a career 71.2% FT shooter is just being bad at math. Gianny was at 61.5% last year in terms of free throw rate btw. It’s absurd. Btw peak Shaq in 2000 only had a 49.5% FTR :oldlol:

A 7 foot basket attacking maniac who goes at people like a bowling ball wrapped in butcher knives and shoots more than peak Iverson per minute takes free throws. Color me shocked.
Talk to me about people taking massive free throws on outside jumpers and avoiding contact.
Guys like Giannis and Wade made me feel like people don’t watch enough basketball to realize they he kinds of plays that get you contact.

How often he shoots is completely irrelevant in terms of free throw rate. Zion doesn't shoot jumpers basically ever and his FTR is almost 10% lower.

Dwight has to have the most insane FT rate ever, his career is 78.7% and he peaked at 97.8

Zion doesn’t attack like Giannis Zion slides by people for layups more than you would think. Giannis goes into you. You watch a few pelican games you don’t see Zion attempt to finish over the top of people. It’s the difference between the way a guy like Kevin Johnson went into your chest and someone like Rod Strickland went around you in the air even though neither of them could really shoot outside and had to drive all game. Giannis attacks for contact. He’s the anti Ben Simmons. He doesn’t care if he shoots 5-18 he’s gonna go through your chest to shoot two more. No fear.
It is if anything a positive. A lot of bad shooters get shook or embarrassed and play timid to avoid being put on the spot. He just doesn’t give a **** and it’s effective.

Barkley got into the 70s in Philly. I suppose the refs loved him too…..

LeBron plays similar to Giannis in terms of scoring and the best he ever got to was 50.6%. He's currently at 29.8% :lol

Fouled on purpose.

I never watched him play but you really think it's unbelievable Barkley got favorable calls? :lol

LeBron absolutely does not play similar to Giannis.
LeBron absolutely does not play similar to Giannis.
In terms of how they look to score? Yeah they do. Giannis looks to score much more often but they both look to score in the same way (driving) as the first second and third option. Especially younger LeBron. I wasn't referring to overall playstyle, just the way they attempt to score.

if you were alive at the time you would know how ridiculous a question that is. Barkley hated the refs and the refs hated him regardless of what you might see in a cleaned up for TV clip.
The idea that a ref has to be cheating in your favor out of bias to take a lot of free throws is ridiculous. Harden took all those free throws and I suspect it wasn’t reds sitting around liking how those bs flops made them look.
Refs don’t give a shit how many free throws Giannis gets in a January hornets matchup. Nobody anywhere is giving that order. He just creates contact and unlike most tries to finish through it forcing a call.
if refs wanted to rig a game, they certainly wouldn’t need to do it by padding free-throw numbers of the biggest name and most visible player in most of his games.

First of all, if LeBron were looking to drive as a first second and third option, he wouldn’t be fifth all-time in three-point attempts ahead even of guys like Vince Carter, who not only played more games, but spent 15 years considered a soft jump shooter. He’s going to pass Reggie Miller in three-point attempts soon and he and Reggie are only separated by 11 games played. He has shot more threes than Giannis ever did in 11 seasons now and the season in question was a great outlier.
Lebron shoots.
Quite a lot.
And if he didn’t, he still wouldn’t be the kind of physical Giannis is, especially as he aged. There’s no comparison at all right now.
Two people both taking shots while in the paint doesn’t make them the same kind of physical attacker. Tony Parker led the NBA in points in the paint over LeBron and Shaq and Dwyane Wade. Doesn’t mean he should’ve been taking 12 free throws a game. Not everyone who drives is looking to go through your jersey and come out bloody on the other side.
Giannis…Barkley…abnormally physical at times.
Lebron is physical but he’s always been softer than that type even though his frame doesn’t require it.

Guys like Embiid, Harden, and even Jimmy freakin Butler have insane free throw rates too. Jimmy Butler is the most surprising, his scoring effectiveness really does rely a lot on getting a lot of free throws.

kblaze is right. The devil is in the details, the nuance. Not all slashers are created equal -- they come in several varieties.
Giannis is incredibly tough to stop because of his combination of physical qualities. His long arms and stride, strength, power, and speed. He uses these to power through contact in an incredibly effective manner that is very hard to guard.
It's difficult to stay in front of a guy who can stride like that. Kevin Durant has a similar stride but can't do the same because he's not as strong, powerful, and fast as Giannis. He also doesn't play physically.
Al Jefferson avoided contact in the post. Shaq and McHale didn't.
LeBron definitely deserves more free throws though. He's too strong and I think that hurts him at times. He also doesn't sell contact as others do. Kevin Martin used to get so many free throws because of how light he was. He'd go flying on even minor contact.

This is why Derrick Rose also never got calls too. Zion finishes in a similar way.
