The original Jake was an actual State Farm employee that they used for the 1-second line. He quit his State Farm job to become a bartender and the company wanted to extend his role so they decided to hire an actual actor as a spokesman for them. Did they choose a black actor for diversity reasons? Unknown but probably which makes sense due to the fact that the country is becoming more diverse very quickly. Turns out they have to sell insurance to more than just white people.
