detroit's gotta take carmelo, he'll be their leading scorer his rookie season, will give them rebounding that they need, and give them a chance at a championship his first year in the league. he could be like worthy was with the lakers, good team ends up with a high ass pick, who ends up being the x-factor. or detroit could trade that pick, you could get almost anyone you want for carmelo.

They will take Darko. Thats what the guy that asked them said. He really impressed them in workouts.http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0TgAAAC0YgsOYv84EFvzxmXvRT0mD3JdP7NiOiSnOVTQdR3mUc z08NvXmOpDd9UZlaJmXxEP9sXgq8GL8FCuRz!9qdC7ZzSlTuZB GuYHrLoaQAcg8xpB0hQ/Kung-Fu.gif

Darko and Wallace is a crazy tandem in the post. Prince is a prospect at the 3 and Rip/Billups is close to the best backcourt in the East (in terms of scoring.)
Could be a shift in the balance of power...
And to think they got the pick for Otis Thorpe

That topic from 2003 inspires me to ask you a question that was fairly common in the years to follow. Were the Pistons right to not draft Carmelo? Obviously he ended up the better player and they also could’ve drafted Dwyane Wade which is usually ignored. But just keeping it on Melo? People came to believe he might have ruined the “Deeeeeetroiiit basketbaaaaaal” vibe with his personality and lack of defense. So maybe instead of winning one that maybe should have been two they don’t win at all. That Darko couldn’t disrupt it from the bench the way Melo would when he justified play time.

In retrospect, the obvious move is to draft Wade, and bring him off the bench because that not only helps them, but it cripples the heat. But between Carmelo and Darko? Do you think Carmelo helps them to more than one ring?

Getting one ring was difficult enough for a team like Detroit. I wouldn't mess with it at all.

Quite a few people here said so at the time but a 17 win team getting the top pick was pretty likely.

Im actually thinking of the lineup they would have had…and how it might look today. Melo is more of a modern 4. Rasheed a modern 5. But he shot 32% from 3 at the time. Would a team play him at the 5 and Melo at the 4 and bench Ben these days? Or maybe Billips, Rip, Prince, Melo, Ben and have Sheed off the bench?

Back then or course they just put Melo over Prince but I’m not so sure today. A guy like Ben might have a harder road to be a somebody. Not that it wasn’t hard enough then either. I guess if guys like Timelord are somebodies a team should have sense enough to see what Ben could be. Could just have a big ass lineup like the Celtics.

Was it possible for Detroit to get #1? Would LeBron in Detroit have helped his career or hindered it? No difference?

I feel like Roody Pooh was on the right track. Melo on the Pistons would've come down to him buying in to what their identity was defensively.

It was a pick from Memphis who won 28 fame so I suppose they were in on #1 potentially.

He would have bought in. He was an infant at the time. He would have taken in whatever he was given.

Rookie Lebron on a Larry Brown coached team would have been fascinating. And people don't realize that it was Brown's first year with the Pistons. He would have been very reluctant to play any rookie. Even Lebron or Melo. And he would have had no patience with them. There were plenty of vets to bury them behind if he wanted to.

I remember John Salley and Michael Jordan saying you should take Melo over Lebron. That was the moment that killed any doubt I had about Lebron becoming the best player in the draft.

John Salley has some of the worst takes I've heard when it comes to basketball. :lol
