Luka Doncic carries the Mavericks to a respectable level, but how can they ever be really good or even great with that limited roster?

What should they do?

I think there's a pretty short list of really good players that would actually fit well with Luka.

True but he doesnt necessarily need other superstars around him. Giannis, Tatum and Butler dont play with another other superstar and theyve repped the east in the last three finals. Give him the cast those guys have and results are probably similar.

That said, part of it is on him to maximize whoever he’s got. Playing slow paced all the time and having shit body language when hes not happy doesnt exactly boost morale. It’s up to the front office to worry about the roster, he needs to worry about being more accountable as a leader.

Didn't dimwidded drop 30+ last game? Let's face it, Luka doesn't play team ball. He should compile all the stats he can breaking records and once he's ready to win, team hop.

He has to play at a slower pace to be able to carry the team all 4 quarters. He's not a generational athlete like Bran who can run for 40 minutes and still close out the game in the 4th. Dinwiddie is their only reliable ballhandler outside of Luka so it's hard to give him rest throughout the game when there isn't enough talent around him. They're 0 - 6 without him on the season despite only playing one Playoff team in those games.

It's hard to ask for him to get more out of their offense when they're getting cooked on the other end. Mavs have a top 10 offense despite their limited talent but are 23rd on D, so that's really the difference from last season. They've gone from 15th to 9th on offense despite losing Brunson for nothing. Mavs' FO has to look at the defensive end rather than overpaying for some borderline all-star to fix their issues. Giannis, Butler & Tatum have elite defenders around them which is really the main difference between their teams & Luka's.

Luka isn't perfect, but blaming him for not winning or playing "team ball" is absurd when nobody in the league would have expectations with a roster like this. Last year was an overachievement beating the Suns and getting to the WCF.

Maybe some day Luka will deserve criticism for holding back his team, but that isn't fair today. This roster is simply nothing noteworthy...yet many can't see that or choose not to. This is exactly what happened with Dirk most of his career. Unfair expectations to win titles with rosters around him that weren't truly championship caliber outside of at most a handful of years in his career.

Like someone said...give Luka a roster similar to the Bucks or Celtics...then it would at least be fair to say he should compete and win. This roster? Only Luka haters think he should be winning anything...and they don't actually think it...they just say it.

Hell, I even think Dirk's teams were a lot better than Luka's currently is. He's sadly another victim of the "win rangz or you're a bum" mentality that has pervaded basketball. 100% guaranteed Jordan would be getting shit on his first 6 years in the league if he was playing today.

Luka is a winner, dude won the Euroleague at 19 ffs. He will do what the team needs him to do to win the game. Not his fault if they surround him with subpar players. What do people expect him to do with that roster? It's a miracle they have victories. But at least he has 1 guy in Spencer who can help out a bit and drop 30.

Look at the Lakers without Lebron, last night Thomas fking Bryant was the best scorer with frkin 18 pts lol. Both Luka and Bron have to carry around pure trash and people expect them to win a ring vs teams that have better bench players then their 2nd option? Get tf outta here!

Mavs are poorly run. Brunson and Porzingis were on that team. Look at Brunson and Porzingis now. I cannot see how the Mavs do right by Luka when they've been making mistakes ever since.

During his prime? Easily. None of Luka's teammates are on the level of Finley/Nash in the early 2000s, or even someone like Josh Howard in the mid 2000s.

i better see some noise involving siakam or lavine during the offseason. They'll be able to trade their picks by then. Neither are perfect but you cant put this roster around your superstar. Not one guy luka plays with is above average at his position let alone an all star. dame has had bad front offices, his starting 5 is significantly better than lukas at least

If Kyrie wants to, I think this is worth a shot.

Then trade the picks for Gobert, then you have a team.

Im just waiting for Luka fans to shamelessly tuck their tails between their legs and say “Luka needs to go play with jokic in Denver” you just know it’s gonna happen… just a matter of time til they beg Luka to collude with the actual best white player in the league…. And they will try to spin it like he’s the alpha if they win anything :oldlol:…they are pathetic but we already knew that

Just a matter of time til they beg for it….just watch….just wait…. I guarantee it happens

Well, yea, Dirk's teams in 03, 06, and 11 were all clearly better than anything Luka has had. Those teams had legit chances to win the title...albeit the 06 team had to overachieve to get as far as they did, but those 3 teams were legit title contenders. Luka hasn't played on one team capable of winning a title.

Pretty worried Luka is going to leave Dallas. I won't blame him if he does...he simply is not getting the help he needs to go down as great of a player as he likely should. Maybe they figure something out, but the Mavericks under Cuban have done a pretty bad job of building teams since he took over around Dirk and now Luka.

So you think the current supporting cast is good enough for Luka to win a title with?

Letting Brunson go was so stupid.

Letting Brunson go was so stupid.

Yep. Had the chance to lock him up on roughly half of what he ultimately got.

My whole point when I learned about the potential contract the year before free agency...was that even if you think it's too much...the contract is so easy to move even in most bad case scenarios. Those types of mistakes make it extremely difficult to build a contender even when you get a generational player like a Dirk or now Luka. Can they get lucky again? Sure, but perhaps Luka won't be as loyal as Dirk and they miss their chance.

We'll see....the saving grace is that a franchise can make mistakes like the Mavs have...and still win because a guy like Luka is that good.
