View Full Version : The Celtics really got Tatum, Brown, and Colin Sexton/Kyrie for 36 year old KG/Pierce
Kblaze8855

They traded the pick that was Sexton to the Cavs for Kyrie.
KG and Pierce combined for like 19ppg in Brooklyn.
Nets really wanted that “Best team ever if everyone were prime” title.
Pierce, KG, Deron Williams, AK47, Joe Johnson, Brook Lopez and Jason Terry. Jason Kidd coaching.
That was when they had the Russian Billionaire and Jay Z as a front owner I believe.
Has any team ever gone all in to win now less successfully?

The Warriors traded Anfernee Hardaway and three future firsts for Chris Webber only to lose in the first round and then turn around and sent him to Washington at his request who sent them back three first round picks thus moving the problem to Washington who ended up doing a whole lot of nothing.
The Minnesota Timberwolves traded four first round picks and a first round pick swap which basically means five first round picks for Rudy Gobert. Early playoff exits followed.
The Cleveland Cavaliers traded three first round picks, two first round pick swaps, Sexton, Markkanen, etc, which basically means five first round picks for Donovan Mitchell. Early playoff exits followed.

As bad as that deal was what really killed that Nets team was the unexpected decline of Deron Williams. Besides the picks wouldn't have been so good if they hadn't made the deal to begin with... yeah Ainge may have an outstanding warrant in the city of Brooklyn.

Young Webber is worth three picks but you have to surround him with talent to really reap the benefits... also I am pretty sure he had some injuries that ruined his time in Washington.

2006 Knicks. Marbury balled out the season before averaging 22/8(which don't look like good stats anymore but was quite impressive at the time), went out to acquire Steve Francis who was on a max type deal for the next couple years. Traded for Eddie Curry with picks that became LMA(who the Bulls traded for Thomas, but I digress) and Joakim Noah. I know Curry doesn't sound like anyone special, but this was the worst era of centers ever. You have to look at Eddie Curry through beer goggles. All this to win 23 games.
Not sure if they were 'going for broke' exactly since the results were so bad, but trading all those picks for Curry and taking on Francis' contract made it seem like Starbury was Kobe and the Knicks were desperate to get a squad around him.

Having thought about it the Jazz traded for veteran Gail Goodrich trying to win with Pistol Pete and the pick they sent LA for him ended up being magic Johnson.

They showed they can beat teams without their 2nd option. Nets traded their 2nd option for a guy that didn't play. Bucks were without Middleton.
The only thing the Celtics have shown is that Tatum is a massive choker on the big stage.

A massive choker with the only eastern conference playoff mvp award. You may not think much of it but no Net was able to beat him or for it. Nets have still traded that second option for a guy that doesn't play and haven't even beaten the injured teams toy want to disparage the Celtics for taking down.

You continue to miss the point. Free agent acquisition is more important than trades. The Nets were able to recover from bad trades via free agency and become ACTUAL title contenders before the Celtics could, after said trades. The one signing of Durant completely changed their fortunes. The same way GSW signing Durant netted them multiple titles. Nobody fukking cares about the Celtics making conference titles and getting smoked. They were never actual contenders.

Celtics were contenders in 2018? They could've beat the Warriors? Or the Rockets?
Contenders means an actual chance at a title. Celtics haven't had that until last year, but only because of massive injuries to opposing teams. Bucks walk through them if the roles were reversed. You know that. Everyone knows that.

Celtics only ever sniffed a title last year due to injuries to 2nd options. They haven't done anything before that. Making a conference title isn't an accomplishment if everyone knows you're not an actual threat. They got beat by the team who got smoked 4-0 in the finals.

Do I need to summarize the thread for you again?
- kblaze asks if a team has ever failed as badly at winning now because they gave up picks that eventually became good players. Implying the Celtics have all the fortunes and the Nets blew their franchise up.
- my argument is thats obviously false, as the Nets became legit title contenders BEFORE the Celtics due to free agency.
The argument was never about how many playoff series each team has won. Winning playoff series while having no shot at a title is MEANINGLESS. everyone knows that. It's worthless. You get worst draft capital too. It's just bad. "But they get experience!" .. experience losing and not being title contenders yes

People have been talking up the clippers for years "if they get healthy" and year after year they disappoint. Last year the Mavs got farther than the clippers ever have in their entire history.
Even without full health they were a centimeter from beating the champion Bucks, who were way WAY better than the 2018 Celtics.
Harden has been healthy almost his entire career outside of that series so it was a fluke. Bad luck. And they still almost won.
So we've concluded that making it to the conference finals doesn't mean you're an actual title contender and that the Nets became actual title contenders before the Celtics did after the poor trade they made 10 years ago.
Thanks for playing.

Title contenders that have never gotten out of the second round. But at least they have a nice excuse.

The bucks had been consistent disappointments in the postseason until they won the title.
And older players being injured isnt bad luck. it's normal. Where is KD now? Out hurt again. How many games did he miss last year? 30 maybe?
Older teams get hurt more than younger teams
Nothing new here.
