Lots of opening in the 3 points area. but the NBA players during that time never capitalize on it. Even a good 3 points shooting team like the Indiana Pacers never attempted more 3's than your modern average NBA teams.

And it was during the time Zone defense was not yet implemented in the NBA.

When the Mavs won the title in '11 they were 5th in the L at something like 21.6 3's attempted per game. In today's game that would be dead last in attempts per game by a good margin w/Chicago at 28.9 per game as the only team shooting less than 30 threes per game this year.

everything is based on percentages to win not 85 games , but the next game you play.
3 point attempts are part of that schematic.

It's a combination of rule changes, meta-game, and basketball being less understood than it is today.

Lol 90s wasn't even basketball.

You could transport a decent 7th grader from today to the 90s and he'd be the best pg in the league. I refuse to acknowledge that era as basketball.

its hard to completely erase it from the books since it was a moment in time but its v tempting given the old school ways and you add in watered down expansions and teams with jeff hornacek as #2 options...sh1t man, yeah your right erase it :oldlol:

You have to adjust for pace. Use 3-point attempt rate (3PAr). It's the percentage of field goal attempts from 3pt range.

The 2011 Mavericks had a 3PAr of 27.4%. You have to go back to 2017-2018 to find teams with lower numbers. They were ahead of the curve to some degree. However, they still played a traditional lineup with Nowitzki and Chandler.

Stan Van Gundy's Orlando Magic was the true ahead-of-the-curve team.

2012: 34.6% 3PAr
2011: 32.8% 3PAr
2010: 35.0% 3PAr
2009: 33.5% 3PAr
2008: 32.2% 3PAr

Damn a team with Jeff Hornecek beat Prime Hakeem, then Prime Duncan and then Prime Shaq. Shit when Lebron was losing to Old Duncan, Prime Dwight.

I don't get why teams didn't start utilizing the 3 point line as soon as it was added. Instead they basically waited 30 years before they were like "yeah there's line here on the court that would give us 3 points over 2. Let's start using it a little more"

Guess you haven't heard of rule changes that freed up perimeter play

and lots of team utilized the three and played inside out. Seattle in fact hit 20 3's against the Rockets in the playoffs in '96 and used Sam Perkins to stretch the floor

Karl Malone beat them. If Malone had a solid 2nd scoring option Like Pippen he would have beaten Jordan.

it was a much simpler game with simpler offensive and defensive strats. the further you shot away from the basket the worse the shot.

Would like to see how confident you'd be shooting when you aren't protected as a shooter back then. Also, you would have been one of the pack had you been born during those times. With the progression of the game behind your back, don't be so obnoxious that you think you are better for the reason that you think you "know" more.

Why do people assume that because a 3 pointer is worth more than a 2 pointer that it's automatically advantageous, and therefore 80s and 90s players were dumb not to utilize it? The league average for 3 point percentage this season is 36%, while the 2 point percentage is 54%. So by attempting 3s you're trading a higher percentage shot for a significantly lower percentage one, and the amount of made 3s doesn't really make up for the difference. And if you watch a game, a lot of 3s are ill-advised (missing an open man under the basket or shooting a 3 on a fast break when you have a man advantage)

lol stfu. the nba literally changed the flag fouls to protect baby jordan and move to a "more skilled game of basketball"... his words after crying about it to the league office for years.

He had a greater one in Stockton and beat Peak Duncan/Robinson, Kobe/Shaq, Hakeem/Barkley/Drexler. Goes to show how tough the era was.

The worst thing about them are the box scores. Averaging 70-80 points per game (esp. in late 90s) seems so dull, especially in today's standards. Those can be achieved in halftime now.

no because he'd get called for walking or palming every time he had the ball. He'd be whining about the hand checking. He'd get benched for throwing up 3's on a 3 on 1 break. He'd be flopping and getting laughed off the floor...

for starters the only guys that had ever shot a 3 played in the ABA. Guys today grow up shooting it. Many of them have a hard time making layups though. The long rebounds that started fast breaks for the other team were considered a bad thing. A lot harder to shoot when a guy can touch you vs wide open 3's because defense isn't allowed anymore. There were guys unstoppable in the paint. Why would they want to start shooting 3's?

I didn't say the era was weak. I just said that it was watered down, with the talent spread out more equally. The Bulls and the 00-02 Lakers never had to play the 80's superteams like the 83 Sixers and the 86 Celtics.
