View Full Version : Why Kareem's scoring was more impressive

Lebron made over 2000 3s. 3s didn't exist in Kareem's first 10 seasons or so. Kareem only took 18 3s and made one. So Kareem had to make a lot more shots than Lebron. 3 pointers weren't even emphasized in the 80s.
Also, Jordan had 10 scoring titles to Lebron's 1. Even KD has 4 scoring titles. Doncic averages more points per game than Lebron.

kareem is subject to being under rated in todays NBA... because of the era.
I will never over look him , for the simple fact I saw him play against greats like Wilt , and Parrish as well as Walton and Akeem and Moses.

Lebron's stats are more similar to Karl Malone, impressive and stable, but not really ground breaking in any way.

Kareem could not play in the NBA when he was 18. As a rookie Kareem averaged 28.8 points per game. If Lew Alcindor had come out of high school and played in the NBA for 4 years instead of at UCLA = lets say he averages a conservative 20 points per game and plays 80 of the 82 games = 1600 points per year and for 4 years that would be 6400 points. No disrespect toward Lebron but Kareem is so overlooked here. It is apples and oranges = completely different eras.

And you are being too conservative to assume only 20ppg at that. I think he would have surely done more than that. Total numbers are great but it seems people have been too much emphasis on it since Lebron has broken the record.

Kareem put up his best numbers when the talent was split between the NBA and ABA. Lebron's scoring is more impressive because he's a pass first scorer who has been consistent throughout a long period of time.
Frankly I'm more impressed with the first man to 10K (Mikan), 20K (Pettit) and 30K (Wilt) than Lebron, KAJ, and Jordan

This just shows why you're an idiot. Higher pace will mean more points, but that's not inflated stats. Players still had to work much harder for their baskets than they do today. If anything, the higher pace required more stamina.
This era is considered an inflated stats era because defense is the weakest it's ever been. Thus it's easier to score today than it was then.
And there's more free education for you.

And again, you provide no data to back up your points. Just opinions which you obviously have no clue about.
Not only was the scoring high, but teams were shooting 50% in the 80's, which is incredibly high.
In the 70's teams shot around 45-46 fg%
In the 90's and 00's it was the same, 45-46 fg%
So from the 70's-00's the era that had the most points scored and the highest efficiency on shots made were the 80's.
Yet, you are still stupid enough to try to argue otherwise, providing retarded statements like "players had to work harder for their basket" while the data shows otherwise.

The NBA didn't even have a 3 point line in the 70's. Teams in the 90's & 00's didn't use the 3 point line the way they use it today.

This dummy doesn't understand that higher pace = equal more possessions for a team which in turn results in more shots made and attempted by a player.
High pace is the main reason why people say Wilt's stats were inflated.

You're only making a dummy out of yourself.
Lakers have the second highest pace in the league this year. At least they did a month or two ago. So you're saying that the Lakers have the second most inflated stats in the league.
You're seriously an idiot. If a team can push the pace, get more possessions, and get more points, that's not "inflating" their stats any more than shooting more efficiently is "inflating" stats.

I don't think there is any question that Chamberlain could have held the scoring record from 1966 to 2023 before Lebron would have eventually broken it.
As Had Chamberlain who was already dominating the college player of the year while in HS been allowed to enter the pros at 18.
That's easily another 6000+ points (he scored 2700 in his rookie season.)
then, factor in that he left basketball after a season in which he finished 4th in the MVP voting, and set a FG% record that stood for close to 50 years...and in fact, in the very last game of his career he hung a 23 point game (on 9-16 shooting, to go along with 21 rebounds)...
how many more seasons could he have played? remember that Wilt was still getting offers to join teams even at 50 years old.
Then you ask yourself..how much more could he have scored had he not listened to his coaches.
As he averaged 40 ppg over the course of his first seven seasons...combined.
Then, because he was asked to...dramatically cut back his shooting in the next three seasons...and could "only" average 23 ppg over that span.
But, his new coach in the '69-70 season asked a 33-year-old Wilt to become the focal point of the offense...and boom...led the league at 32.2 ppg before he blew out his knee.
Clearly, had Wilt been asked to score, he likely would have added 2000+ points between '67 -'69.
Therefore I don't think there is any question that Chamberlain could have scored close to 40,000+ points had he decided to pursue it.

LeBron James, as we all know was allowed to play in the NBA from ages 19 to 22, right out of high school.
During those years, he racked up 8,439 points, 2,102 rebounds, and 2,033 assists.
Players were not able to be drafted out of high school until a 1971 Supreme Court Case changed that law.
Being very, very conservative, let's say Wilt averaged 25/20/2 from ages 19-22.
As from what I’ve read Wilt while being coached by Red scrimmaged against NBA players such as Neil Johnston while he was a teenager and utterly dominated them (Tall Tales by Terry Pluto).
He'd have over 36000 points, ~30,000 rebounds, and ~5,000 assists in his career.
Lebron's scoring record is impressive.
But you do have to factor in that guys such as Kareem and Wilt would have racked up even better counting stats had they been allowed to enter the NBA straight out of high school

Utter desperation. You knew very well I was talking about the current era
Stop lying
And again, you provide no data to back up your points. Just opinions which you obviously have no clue about.
Not only was the scoring high, but teams were shooting 50% in the 80's, which is incredibly high.
In the 70's teams shot around 45-46 fg%
In the 90's and 00's it was the same, 45-46 fg%
So from the 70's-00's the era that had the most points scored and the highest efficiency on shots made were the 80's.
Yet, you are still stupid enough to try to argue otherwise, providing retarded statements like "players had to work harder for their basket" while the data shows otherwise.
I told you in another thread to do some research before you say something you know nothing about, but you continue to be impulsive which in result makes you look like a fool.
I hope you have learned your lesson.
