A while back I discovered that Tpain…could actually sing. He put out all that auto tune bullshit but he never needed it:

He could have put some of those songs out showing his own talent and been a star. I was annoyed for all those years when he had it in him to dominate the “right” way.

Anyone in the nba annoy you by doing things you don’t even think they need to do? Someone you might respect if they played it straight because you know they have it in them?

I feel there are 3 good answers but I’ll see what you think first.

Kyrie. He really has one of the smoothest games ever. I wish he just had the right mentality for basketball.

Mac Miller is more of a Shaq meme “Sorry young fella. I really wasn’t familiar with your game.” kinda thing.

I was aware of him from that kool aid and frozen pizza song but when he passed people were acting like we lost a legend and I just didn’t get it. The I stumbled across an album and heard all kinds of classic laid back shit like:

And I listened to his Tiny Desk live concert and I realized I was sleeping on him.

Nba wise I’d say it’s not so much about who is underrated…as who you personally didn’t appreciate till you paid closer attention. They might be rated properly by the masses or even historically overrated, but you personally didn’t see the big deal because you weren’t as familiar with them as you should’ve been.

What player did you gain an appreciation for that made you realize the praise probably was warranted and you just didn’t know it?

I might say Harden is the best example. All that shady flopping bullshit when he was actually so talented he didn’t need it.

And didn’t even win anything doing it so it’s not like it’s a “Ends justify the means” situation where he’s showing rings to the haters. He didn’t need all the auto tune. He could actually sing but pissed us off with his antics and never even got a ring out of it.

I dunno. I havent really listened to contemporary music since file sharing became a thing. I couldnt name a single song by either of those dudes.

I know there are very talented people today just like there always were, but the industry's profit model no longer depends on talent and musical quality, just purely marketing, shock value, and viralness.

Before file sharing that was like, 25% of the formula. Now it's like 90%.

So I just never really give anything new a chance.

Edit: I should say I dont really give anything mainstream a chance. I do listen to some independent things being made today.

I promise you would recognize Tpain songs if you were alive from 2000-2010 or so. Society wouldn’t let you escape them. Mac Miller no.

Tpain was on 26 platinum songs and one Diamond. You couldn’t escape that guy.

Oh Im sure I've heard them plenty of times. I remember knowing he was one of the mainstream pioneers of autotune. I just wouldnt be able to specifically name the songs or be sure it was him if you played the ones I have heard. I havent kept track of who does which song in years.

I think the final CD I ever purchased was Fischscale, or possibly B.A.R.S. by Cassidy (the latter not being very good).

After that I just stopped paying attention to new stuff and started digging up old music on Youtube.

I get it. I can’t name a Katy Perry or Lady Gaga song but I’m sure I’ve heard them.

This is one you no doubt have heard in the background somewhere:

But you watch the clip in the OP he obviously didn’t need to do all that. Like James Harden didnt need to be this guy

The lure of the dark side was too strong I guess.

Actually I think I did buy a couple of Raekwon's joints on itunes later on. OB4CL2 and Shao vs Wu. But that was still years ago.

First one I actually dont remember/recognize, second one definitely altho I always thought that was Nelly until now :lol

Tbh I actually hate the sound of synthesized autotune singing. Not simply on musical principle, but the sound itself is genuinely unpleasant to me. So I really dipped out hard on mainstream music once that came around.

Don’t remember buy you a drink?

We were in very different establishments in the early 2000s it seems. Which is fine. I heard it…when I’d rather not.

T-Pain:

Kobe. If he were content to be the level of player he actually was, he would be regarded as one of the greatest all around creators ever. Instead, he got addicted to how cool it felt to drain a 21 footer in someone's face.

If he had never taken a shot outside of 18 feet (unless it was a well-timed 3) and made an effort to be the greatest passing two-guard ever, he would have been. There would be quarters and halves he would play the right way, and it was just beautiful.

Mac Miller:

Nobody jumps to mind. Maybe Zach Lavine and Pascal Siakam, but I'm still not sure I'm wrong about them. I seldom change my mind on players much in a positive way-- I'm more likely to sour on a guy, realize he's not actually good. What would be the pop culture comparison for that?
