Peak McHale was a beast. 26.1 ppg, 9.9 rpg, 2.6 apg, 0.5 spg, 2.2 bpg, 2.6 topg on 60.4% FG, 83.6% FT, 65.5% TS. Voted the best defender in the league by NBA coaches.

Sick quote by Don. How many other greats can be argued as being both the most dominant paint scorer and best defender in the league at the same time? Maybe Giannis, LeBron, Anthony Davis, and Wilt Chamberlain? Shaq and Chuck never had the defense, but Shaq was 3rd in DPOY in 2000.

Did Wilt ever have an argument for being a better defender than Bill Russell for at least a single season? LeBron was runner-up DPOY in 2009 and 2013.

Adds Milwaukee Bucks coach Don Nelson, ''Kevin McHale is the best inside player in the league. He is as close to unstoppable as you can get."

Stick four shooters and solid passers around this guy and he'd drop 25-30 ppg on 65-70% TS. Similar production to Jokic's scoring game. I see some McHale in Nikola's post-up and interior game. However, a way more aggressive scorer - more like Embiid in that department.

MJ would've 3-peated from 87-89' with peak McHale and probably 90-92'... McHale was still giving you 20 ppg in 91' and 92' PO.

All big men look up to Dirk now and want to be perimeter shooters. The next generation will look up to Durant who's like a more athletic Dirk. The era of back to basket big men is over. Sure Jokic and Embiid will post up but they are good perimeter shooters.

The Gospel of McHale is being spread far and wide.

In the name of the Lord - Amen!

Mchales just too much of a black hole to lead your offense in modern game. Even embiid is a great passer historically for a big

He's what Sengun would be like if he had a freakishly long wingspan instead of a below average one. McHale had like Anthony Davis level length IIRC.

Yeah, but the era of versatile wings who can post mismatches is upon us. So many teams switch everything now that you need a guy that can punish smaller players that they get on switches.

Agree to disagree, homeboy!

McHale's shot creation is a function of his role, the teammates he played with, and the system that was run. His usage rate and time of possession was incredibly low relative to his offensive output.

A better example of a true "black hole" or "ball hog" would be Adrian Dantley. If there were time of possession stats back then, he'd have been right at the top - even with Magic and Isiah!

Had Kevin (McHale) dominated possession like Hakeem, Duncan, Malone, Barkley, or Dirk, he'd have generated more shots for his teammates. His Box Creation numbers are similar to some of those guys.

I don't think he was any less of a passer than Duncan, Dirk, or Hakeem. And they all played in a league with greater passing opportunities due to increased spacing via 3pt shooting. Even Ben Taylor referenced his high-low passing in his Top 40 greatest careers project.

AD averaged 3 assists a game and 5 at his peak. Hardly a black hole. McHale's protege Al Jefferson was a black hole
