View Full Version : Is Perkins somehow a worse analyst than he was an NBA player?

For those who don't have time to watch at this very moment:
Perkins says the only guys to win mvp after 1990 while not being a top 10 scorer were all white: Dirk, Nash and Jokic. Obviously, Magic won 3 times in a row from 88-90 and only being top 10 in scoring once out of the 3.
He also admits he doesn't know the criteria for MVP, so maybe his vote should be revoked. I mean, he's also the moron who put Booker ahead of Giannis.
And in grand 'dumb guy' fashion he digs a deeper hole for himself while trying to depend his stance. Perkins implies since most voters are white, white players have it easy. Good on JJ to not let him off the hook.
Whether he's racist or just a bad analyst, there are plenty of reasons to get rid of this guy for now. It's not like he's a draw that certain people tune in for.

You realize that nobody on ESPN is there to be correct right? They are there mostly to generate discussion and these days to drive online engagement. Meaning…what you’re doing right now. Linking to YouTube and furthering the discussion. You aren’t talking about the quiet reserved guys who make points. You talk about people who get into heated arguments.
The spectacle is more important than the substance. Has been for at least 15-20 years of sports media.

You are 100% correct, but I can't imagine politically correct ESPN is happy about a discussion about race. They'd much prefer one of their idiots claiming Jokic isn't top 5 or something.
i don't really have a problem with what perk said
there are a lot of racist people
i also don't have a problem with barkley calling perk part of a disease in response
everything is worth considering
it's what people who are genuinely trying to learn do
anyway
randomly came across this
didn't check to see if it's all correct
i'll let it sit there and marinate

If they had a problem with it they would pull him off the air. Instead he gets featured."The shot clock isn't real. Time is an illusion. "

I told you the "culture" isn't a fan of Jokic. You still don't believe it for some reason.

I’ve yet to hear a black person say anything negative about him in person. Everyone around me loved when he laid the twin out too.

Deng, Boozer, Butler, Noah, Pau, and Korver all come to mind but im not sure if they count years when you aren’t playing with them. And now that I think about it? First 8 years? That gets him to New York so Melo and KP as well. Lots of room to be misleading in a graphic like that.

You said that nba fans underrate Jokic because he is white and from another country. Somehow that makes sense in your head. This is an MVP voter saying that other mvp voters have been supporting Jokic because he is white. Imo he is wrong in many of their cases but whether or not he has a point it certainly does not support your idiocy.

This.
Of course, Perkins and The Culture has nothing to do with black people. “The Culture” is property of Disney/Turner. To influence black people to resent this or be divided from that or to buy or vote for x, y, and z.
Thats who Perkins represents.
Black people arent monolithic. “The Culture” is a corporate-political attempt to make them such, as theyre easier to control that way. The people who set “The Culture’s” agenda are caucasian billionaires. Perkins is just a handsomely paid propagandist.

Black people being able to be blatantly racist is what the left is these days. It's so common that yeah, not smart people will consider it run of the mill. All for teh ratings.
In reality it's a glaring and cringey double standard, but again that's whats largely accepted by the left because they're batshit crazy. Right is too, but far less with social stuff like this.

But where I come from, calling someone something that abhorrent is a harsh accusation... not something you throw around lightly like Perk did.

Perkins doesn't know anything. He was 100% being racist and making up stats about how many white voters there are. First take came out and apologized for the untrue error and then moved on like nothing.
Perkins was quite literally being blatantly racist because Joker is white. He's Implying there's been more deserving guys for the MVP but Joker is winning because most of the voters are white and racist.
It's an all-time bad take, and 100% racist. And the double standard is beyond obvious. Not even worth talking about really, we know if he'd white and saying x player is winning mvps because he's black then he's fired immediately. We all understand that

He's easily a terrible analyst. At least he gave the Celtics a couple decent runs during their championship window. His play in 2009-10 on the defensive end was at least good. Specifically in 2009 with KG out.

I get it's all acting but does Perk need to be on full retard mode all the time?
coin24

Perkins is a total retard. Has to be scripted. 80% of voters are white so obvious racism:facepalm
Every story in the media now has to mention race and gender, it’s a disgusting agenda.
Deng, Boozer, Butler, Noah, Pau, and Korver all come to mind but im not sure if they count years when you aren’t playing with them. And now that I think about it? First 8 years? That gets him to New York so Melo and KP as well. Lots of room to be misleading in a graphic like that.
i don't think that graphic counts boozer since his all stars were before rose and doesn't count korver since his was after
don't know why 2013 and 2017 were counted since it adds up to 9 years
i'd say throw out 2013 since he didn't play at all
which brings the total down to 7 all star 5 all defense 2 all nba
but with rose's injury history it's all pretty irrelevant either way
other than to show chicago offered him what was considered high level talent if he was healthy
the concept of the graphic means something and gets a lot right
for example jokic at 0 + 0 + 0 = 0 is true and pretty funny
you could say he's the only mvp in the last 40 years playing with nothing

Jordan won it in 88. Magic was 87, 89 and 90( the latter many think should have gone to Barkley).

I get it's all acting but does Perk need to be on full retard mode all the time?I don’t think it’s acting. Acting is Skip’s Lebron hater persona. Do I think Skip is actually a fan behind closed doors? Probably not. He probably doesn’t care, I wouldn’t be surprised if he despises most of his own viewers that he has to keep doing that old song and dance for. Perkins otoh, is just really that stupid. ESPN put him back on on purpose that’s for sure, knowing something controversial was coming. Little did they know, they couldn’t have scripted anything better themselves.

Perk's job is just to say shit, he said this in an interview beforehand. Anything that brings in discussion. Nothing brings in any more drama than race, pronouns or political party in America nowadays.

They shrug it off because they agree with Perk or they look like Perk. Simple as that. And it's always the same excuse when they get called out. They backpedal by saying, "Well these shows are just for entertainment value."

Good job on JJ for calling out Perkins.
the crazy thing is jokic is also the only mvp in nba history without any all star/all nba/all defense teammates his first 8 years
and jokic was top 10 in scoring for his first two mvp if you use basketball reference list
and dirk was top 10 in 2007
but as perk would say

As has been pointed out, this probably isnt even Perkins' take. This was almost certainly the script handed to him when he showed up to the studio that day.
This is a professional talk show that broadcasts to countless people, they dont just pull topics out of the air and cross their fingers the analysts can come up with something compelling to say on the spot each time. This stuff is organized and scripted ahead of time to make it fluid, coherent, and preferably controversial. A producer decides on the topic or direction for that day's show, and staff writers often do the research and decide what the on-air people end up saying. It's no different than sportscenter anchors reading off a teleprompter.
Perkins probably walked in that morning and the producer was like "Perk we're gonna do a race angle thing today, that oughtta get people talking online, so try to work in a racism claim when the topic of MVP comes up."
Thats how this stuff works. But the people just gobble it up, and take the bait, time after time.

Ah, ok.
The clip posted in the OP looks like they're in a studio so I assumed this was some morning-show thing, but to be honest I didnt watch because I lost interest in these kind of contrived controversy segments years ago. Nor do I have any interest in hearing what an ESPN mouthpiece has to say in a live stream, podcast, or any other format really.
But ofc I'm not shocked it would be his actual opinion. It feels like a thing Kendrick Perkins would say. Just that studios do definitely try to contrive these exact kinds of conflict for promotional purposes, so I wouldnt put that scenario past them either.

you could say it was in the playoffs
depending on how you look at it
given his overall level of play
as was jokic
and they ran into ad/lebron/a better team

He's much better as an "analyst". He always finds a way to put himself in the news and to generate clicks for ESPN. He wouldn't be on the air if he was bad at his job.
