View Full Version : If you had to create a sports swagger Mt Rushmore would anyone from the NBA be on it?

My tentative list would be Muhammad Ali, Deion Sanders, and Ric Flair(let’s not have the “It isn’t a real sport” discussion. Nobody thinks it is but he still gets the spot). I can think of a few nba candidates but not enough to look past those from other sports. Anyone in basketball beating out say…Usain Bolt or David Beckham for that last spot? And I’m not even saying one of them gets it. There is a long list of options I’m just not sure anyone in basketball makes it. Magic Johnson is an option. Jordan of course. Some may say Kobe.

Any of them beating out Roy Jones?

Im not sure basketball gets a spot on that list.

Hell Conor McGregor might beat out anyone in basketball brief as his run was.

MJ has been so dominantly up there that there seems to be a reluctance to throw his name in around these boards. Look at every list available on line and you'd find MJ if not at #1, surely within top 3.

I doubt basketball gets a spot. Nor does David Beckham. And if you are allowing WWE guys then they'd all probably be WWE guys since having swag and charisma is half their job. Ali should have a spot tho for being the OG.

His swagger was like Adrien Broners. I mean it was cool beating up tomato cans until they got some real comp.

Clyde Frazier had swag.
Dr J
Jordan, maybe. Young Jordan. Being dominant doesn't mean you have swag.
Razor Ramon, possibly more swag than Flair. Could be.

Razor Ramon was a character performing in pre-written sketches, produced like a TV show. Ric flair was this guy off the top:

Ric Flair wasn't a character? He got his style from Dusty Rhonds and Gorgeous George and SuperStar Billy Graham.
Razor Ramon was a new style of character in wrestling.

McGregor was an elite of the elite level fighter until after the Mayweather fight. His fighting style changed a lot and he became a lot less light on his feat after that.

Khabib was the only guy he's ever faced that he probably didn't have a legit chance of beating pre or post Mayweather. And Khabib beat everyone.

McGregor beat Holloway, Porier, Mendes, Aldo and Alvarez and they were all really good fighters.

McGregor probably is the pinnacle of the combination of ability & showboating in all of pro sports history. The only other guy that would be on that short list with him would be Ali.

Now we're getting in the weeds. I don't think this distinction is knowable. I can only look at the final product be it off the cuff or scripted, ghostwritten. And that by angle I think it's all WWE guys since it's in their job description. Next in line would be boxers since self promotion is a big part of their game too.

Probably Wilt or Shaq.

Shaq for sure had an outsized personality that fit his game as the MDE.

Razor Ramon was a new style of character in wrestling.

Razor Ramon was literally a character with writers, directors, and so on created and shot like sketches. The wwf of that era was just producing weird characters and introducing them in skits and seeing what stuck. It’s not “swag” to play a written role. It’s like including movie characters.

Ric Flair was a creation of Ric flair. He wasn’t someone who wasn’t that…hired to read someone else’s words for a tv show.

Ric Flair was a character created from the success of Rick Fliehr wrestling career. He was doing other people. Rhodes. Billy Graham. His nickname is from Buddy Rogers. The Nature Boy. He's a character a well.
What next, Mr McMahon isn't a character.
New Jack might be the most original wrestler.

Also, not debating Ric don't have swag. But, he's a character. Just like 99% or wrestlers.

He’s a character in that he is on TV entertaining people with his persona. Razor Ramon is a character like….Batman.

I mean true, I get it but c'mon Batman lol.
What about Scott Hall, he's more real that Razor. I mean he uses his real name.

Shawn Michaels is definitely there

On topic though Jordan or Kobe could be there or even other dudes who were/are borderline delusional like Gilbert Arenas or JR Smith :lol

No one has ever lit up an arena like McGregor. And that press conference in Toronto leading up to the Mayweather fight is the best of all time.

He's easily number 1.

Toney has the skills to beat Roy convincingly. Unfortunately, Toney likes to eat more

Relative to his playing ability nobody in the NBA had more swag than Sam Cassell. If he had MJ and Bird on his team he would think he should take the last shot.

I was watching that fight live. I remember seeing Toney in an interview saying Roy's opponents were weak and that he was just slapping with his punches. Then during the fight i saw Toney in his corner saying "Man, he's fast". That fight was total domination from Jones.

He's the closest when it comes to NBA guys

Now in my opinion you've got three spots...Ali, Deon, and Joe Namath and the fourth one is wide open

Beckham is a no. He was cool but he never carried any responsibility or came up particularly big on the big occasion.

Same for the Wit mention. He had swagger outside the court. On the court he had a career oser kind of vibe tbh with those infamous game 7s.

I get that swag is not clutch, but you have to back it up in some kind of way.

Id say Cristiano Ronaldo. So assured.
