The 2004 Pistons were a great defensive team. One of the greatest ever.

However, let's not forget about the Spurs. Even on the Piston's championship year, the Spurs may have been the better defensive team. The Spurs allowed the same number of points on lower FG%. The only reason that they didn't meet the Pistons in the Finals was Fisher's 0.4s shot. Broke the Spurs on Game 5.
2004 Opponents
Pistons: 84.3 41.3%
Spurs: 84.3 40.9%

The following year, the Spurs were once again the top defensive team. This time, the Spurs were the champ. That Finals series was possibly the most technical Finals series ever. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
2005 Opponents
Pistons: 89.5 43.0%
Spurs: 88.4 42.6%

Pistons after the Sheed trade had under 90 DRtg... just insanity.

'93 Knicks to me are the most underrated defense ever, or at least don't get discussed enough.

99.7 DRTG (+8.3)

league average was at 107.9

They were great, you're right. Their '93-'94 squad was right there with them.

This is a good read from Bleacher Report. It takes a team's Drtg compared to the league average.

If you stick to the modern era this is their list;

1. 2003-04 San Antonio
2. 2007-08 Boston
3. 1992-93 New York
4. 1993-94 New York
5. 2003-04 Detroit
6. 1998-99 San Antonio
7. 2013-14 Indiana
8. 2004-05 San Antonio
9. 2010-11 Chicago

^ I usually rely on rDRtg but thing is even that isn't a perfect metric. In some seasons there is more variance between teams and in some seasons like this current one there is much less variance.
