3 1sts and possibly 60 million in cap space. Danny will be in the middle of whatever happens this summer which is what he wanted. I guess the first order of business will be seeing where they are picking. Their pick is 9th. Minnesota's is tied for 15th but I guess it depends on what happens this week in the play-in as to rather it is a lottery pick or not. Got something like a 20% chance of the top pick with their slot.

https://www.ksl.com/article/50618070/where-will-the-jazz-pick-in-the-2023-nba-draft
The 14th pick in the lottery has a 2.4% chance of moving into the top four; 13th has a 4.7% chance; 12th has a 7% chance.
If there is a tie — and there could be one between the Wolves and Pelicans if they both don't get through the play-in tournament — draft selections are determined by a random drawing; however, they split lottery ping pong balls evenly, and any odd remainder and the better draft order position are given to the random drawing winner.
The lottery will be held on May 16 at the draft combine in Chicago.
But, wait, there's more: Utah's final first-round selection is now official. Utah will get the No. 28 selection from the Royce O'Neale trade last summer. The Jazz got the least favorable pick between Houston, Brooklyn and Philadelphia.

https://www.deseret.com/2023/4/9/23671991/utah-jazz-rudy-gobert-los-angeles-lakers
The Jazz were already looking like the team that was on the winning end of the Gobert trade, which gave the Jazz multiple first-round picks (including Minnesota’s first-round pick this year), Kessler and a haul of other players that have been dealt and flipped since.
if they'd had Gobert they'd have been one of the top teams in the league. Their D and rebounding sucked despite playing big
It might seem a little impudent to say so, but if you’re a Jazz fan and you think about the Jazz team that came before this one, or look at the Timberwolves team that played on Sunday, you’re probably feeling pretty good about things in Utah.
trading the 3rd best player ion franchise history hasn't felt good. Should have been figuring out where his statue was going

The Utah Jazz entered Thursday night in their game vs. the Oklahoma City Thunder in essentially what was a “win-or-go-home” scenario. While the Jazz still needed a few things to go their way in order to make the play-in, last night was a crucial one for Will Hardy and the squad.
nothing crucial about a team that was built to lose games
If there was one thing that was made clear tonight, it’s that Kris Dunn was deserving of his multi-year extension (https://www.si.com/nba/jazz/news/jazz-sign-kris-dunn-two-year-deal) with the Jazz.
been clear since day 1

If Rudy decides not to retire, he finds himself with a $6.4 million player option on his contract. While this is probably more than he would find on the open market, if he does decide to come back for another season, wouldn’t it just make more sense to play for a team that’s more competitive right now?
be nice if they found someone to do this site with a clue. Gay is likely with the Jazz until next year's trade deadline. He isn't giving up that money and no one wants him unless he's somehow thrown into a big trade
Toscano-Anderson will be entering his age 30 season in September (his birthday actually on Monday; happy birthday, Juan). With the potential to contribute to a more competitive roster around the league, the opportunity for him may just be greater elsewhere.
Jazz will need vets and wings. I could see him being back. Probably not but possible. Jazz should be one of the most competitive rosters next year. See what they can do with ttheir cap space but already won 36 with this group
Clarkson will be turning 31 in July, still in some of the best years of his career. The eight-year vet may just end up taking his talents elsewhere with better championship aspirations than the Jazz right now.
good luck with the championship Bum!

https://www.ksl.com/article/50618519/a-look-at-where-the-utah-jazz-stand-on-player-options-free-agents-and-non-guaranteed-deals
Clarkson has a player option for $14.2 million for next season, but he'll likely test the free agency market after a career year. Clarkson averaged 20.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.8 assists this season (all career-highs) and showcased an improved all-around offensive game. It's clear he's set to get a raise — and that still could be with the Jazz.
has to go! Let someone else pay the Bum
Horton-Tucker has a player option for $11 million for next season. A couple months ago, it looked like he and his camp would have had an easy decision, but after averaging 18.2 points, 6.0 assists and 5.1 rebounds in 19 games as a starter, there might be a market for the 22-year-old player.
I'd say the Jazz will be very happy if he opts out. Has some upside but if he never develops a shot it's very limited
Gay has a player option for $6.5 million for next season; he won't get that if he hits free agency, but Gay has already made nearly $175 million during his 17-year career, so the decision might not come down to money.
almost always comes down to money. He might be out of the league if he opts out
Jones has a player option for $2.5 milloin — not significantly more than what a minimum contract would look like for the backup center. He did say he plans on picking it up.
well duh!
The Utah Jazz did not pick up the fourth-year option for their 2020 first-round pick, likely ending Azubuike's run with the team. The oft-injured big had his best stretch of his career to close the season, averaging 7.5 points and 6.3 rebounds in the last 12 games of the year. Will that be enough to keep him in the league? Time will tell.
not sure it was better than the 18 game or whatever stretch last year. Not sure why they kept he around after the deadline. He can play in the league.
In 22 games for the Jazz, Toscano-Anderson averaged 3.4 points and 2.9 rebounds while shooting just 17% from 3-point range. The 30-year-old swingman, who came to Utah as part of the Mike Conley trade, is not expected to be a high priority for the Jazz once free agency begins.
no but they need wings and vets so I could see him being back depending on what else happens
Dunn and Samanic each have deals that included a non-guaranteed year in 2023-24. They are expected to compete for spots in training camp.
Samanic got a partial guarantee. Dunn could certainly be gone if they sign another vet pg. Both could be in trades. That is why you sign guys to these deals

On the other end, the Jazz became the first team since 1990-91 to allow 100 points in every game of a season, per Tyson Ewing (https://twitter.com/tyewing2/status/1645174806281859072?s=20). Their opponent eFG% was actually average at 54.1%, but they were the third worst team at forcing turnovers.
With Gobert they would have been one of the top teams. The turnovers is something that was supposed to improve with COTM gone
NBA Draft: June 22. The Jazz have drafted in the top 10 just three times in the past 17 drafts. The last time, they selected Dante Exum, who struggled with injuries and ultimately lost the faith of his coach. Before that, it was Enes Freedom (nee Kanter), who forced his way out of Utah while still on a rookie contract, but who definitely missed the mountains. Before that, they drafted Gordon Hayward ninth and saw him develop into an All-Star before leaving to Boston. This June, they’ll try again.
let's keep blaming Exum on injuries. He never looked like an NBA basketball player to me. An athlete trying to play at the highest level of basketball

The team will be armed with three picks in the coming NBA Draft, and perhaps more than $30 million in cap space, plus potentially millions more in expiring contracts. “We thought that this season would be a journey, a season of discovery. … We got to find out a lot of different things about our players — things we really needed to know as we try to open up a championship window,” said general manager Justin Zanik. “… The flexibility we were able to create for now and going forward, along with all the ability to go and target different things — that can take form in many different ways.” Or, as he put it a bit more succinctly a bit later … “[With] the optionality that we’ve created, the possibilities are endless,” Zanik said. “… There could be a lot of change this summer.” (https://www.sltrib.com/sports/jazz/2023/04/12/utah-jazz-execs-say-there-could-be/)

“Yeah, this is gonna be fun,” CEO Danny Ainge said Wednesday morning in a season wrap-up interview with local media. “A lot more draft picks, more money to spend — yeah, a shopping spree. (https://www.sltrib.com/sports/jazz/2023/04/12/utah-jazz-execs-say-there-could-be/) Yeah, this will be more fun — much more fun than last year.”

“We’re not going to put a timeline on it, because the very next thing is always the most important thing,” Zanik said. “… It’s just a continuous timeline of us trying to make really good decisions.” That said, they understand the inclination observers have to wonder how long the road to contention will be. “You guys aren’t the only ones asking us when we’re going to be good, how good we’re going to be this year. We get asked that question by [owner] Ryan [Smith] all the time, too,” Ainge quipped. “He’s anx (https://www.sltrib.com/sports/jazz/2023/04/12/utah-jazz-execs-say-there-could-be/)ious to spend his money. And we’re anxious to spend it.” (https://www.sltrib.com/sports/jazz/2023/04/12/utah-jazz-execs-say-there-could-be/) – via Salt Lake Tribune (https://www.sltrib.com/sports/jazz/2023/04/12/utah-jazz-execs-say-there-could-be/)

It’s nice to see a Jazz team that’s aware of their weaknesses and wants to improve on them. That type of self awareness was absent with the former head coach and Dennis Lindsey that is now a part of what the Jazz do. The question is, how do the Jazz improve on that. Will it be through the draft, free agency, or by trade? We’ll find out soon.
let's not put it all on the Wizard. What did Zanik do? The head coach refused to make adjustments. The superstar refused to play D or pass the ball...
Olynyk was an integral part of the Jazz’s season with his locker room presence and his unselfish style of play. Olynyk plays with infectious intensity and moves the ball on offense which contributed to one of the best offenses in the league at times this season. Bringing him on to the team is a no-brainer.
picking up his option is a no brainer because he has value. Having him on the roster might not be a no brainer when you have money and picks

Unless the Jazz plan on starting Kris Dunn at point guard next season, they probably need to invest in some new talent at the position. With Hood-Schifino sitting here at 15, it’s a no-brainer. As a player, he provides great size and defense with a great mid-range shot.

doubt Simone will be with the team past the trade deadline next year
They have found a legitimate first-option scorer to replace Donovan Mitchell and one who at seven-feet tall might only be scratching the surface of his potential. He’s also under contract for the next two seasons at an incredibly low number and seems like a cultural fit in Utah.

Danny Ainge was asked about watching playoff basketball, and he essentially said that the only NBA basketball he truly watches to evaluate a team is playoff basketball. His goal is for the Jazz to be competitive in the playoffs. “It’s hard to hide weaknesses in the playoffs, and weaknesses are exposed in the playoffs.” I think that was a bit of a shot to the previous rendition of the Utah roster that was outrageously successful in the regular season, but experienced playoff failures multiple seasons in a row.

He projects to be a great fit with Utah. With Kelly Olynyk entering the offseason on a non-guaranteed contract, there’s no promises we see him back with the team. This would open up the perfect role for Walker to instantly click with the Jazz in year one.
partial guarantee. Lauri should be their 4. They talk about getting better defensively and they play on playing 3 bigs still?
One thing the Jazz should be avoiding is selecting two players that play the same position in the same class. Especially when you consider the talent Utah currently has in the frontcourt (https://thejnotes.com/2023/04/14/utah-jazz-markkanen-runaway-winner-mip/), all this pick does is create a logjam at the position.

Jordan Clarkson and Talen Horton-Tucker also had impressive stretches during the season, but both could leave the Jazz this summer in free agency.
we can hope
Beyond the aforementioned three players atop the draft, the Thompson twins (Amen and Ausar), Cam Whitmore, Jarace Walker, Anthony Black, Gradey Dick, Cason Wallace, Taylor Hendricks, Nick Smith Jr., Keyonte George, and Jordan Hawkins generally make up the top 14 picks of the lottery in some order.
so I could see Ainge trying to move to get two picks inside the top 14
The Jazz do have one of the deeper backcourts in the NBA in Clarkson, Sexton, Horton-Tucker, and Dunn next season, but none of the four players is a proven star, and their futures with the team are murky.
Clarkson sucks. Horton-Tucker might be out of the league if he doesn't develop a more consistent shot and Dunn has been out of the league. Sexton has never been healthy. Deep? :lol

But, with that said, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Jazz want to take a chance on a different player next season with one of their two-way spots.
I'd think if the Jazz really liked him they would have tried signing him to a multi year NBA deal
I don’t want to pretend that we know that much about Potter’s NBA game from seven garbage-time appearances. Like I said at the top, this was a strange season that required so much time dedicated to the 15-man roster that it left very little time for the two-way players. If the Jazz wanted to give Potter another two-way deal, it wouldn’t be surprising to me. But I would also understand, as with Juzang, if the Jazz wanted to get a deeper look at someone else.

Like a glove. A frontcourt of Lauri Markkanen, Jarace Walker, and Walker Kessler would be a ridiculous foundation moving forward. If you believe in his shooting prospects, then he might be the #2 player in the draft for the Utah Jazz (https://www.slcdunk.com). He’d allow Markkanen to maintain positional size at the 3 while providing an elite switchable defender to go alongside Kessler’s rim protection. Add in Ochai Agbaji as a 3-and-D wing and you’re a really good point guard away from an extremely fun and high-potential team.

However, Beal’s expected salary of $46.7 million dollars next season dwarfs Clarkson’s anticipated earnings of $14.2 million. In order to make the numbers work, the Jazz will most likely have to part ways with Collin Sexton and Talen Horton-Tucker. Sexton and Horton-Tucker are both productive role players and they are relatively young, so Washington would welcome them with open arms. This scenario also allows Utah to retain the services of Ochai Agbaji, who is only 22 years old and had the potential to be a future All-Star in his own right.

Considering the Jazz’s current cap situation this offseason, they could opt to make a bigger-scale signing like Grant. He provides ample size, scoring, and shooting which could all be of value for Utah this upcoming season. A signing like this also prevents the Jazz from parting ways with some of their valuable players (https://thejnotes.com/2023/04/17/utah-jazz-trade-lauri-markkanen-2023-offseason/) or draft assets in order to address the need at PF.
they have Lauri. No need other than to get a young guy to develop there

Stockton
Malone
Gobert
Dantley
Maravich
Williams
whoever you choose but certainly not Eaton
Williams was one of the top point guards in the league during his time in Utah and was the leader of the best team the franchise has seen since Stockton and Malone left the organization.
the best team because they made the finals by getting lucky and facing an 8th seed? :facepalm
Boozer and Gobert should both likely be ranked higher on this list based on accolades, statistics, and team success, while Hayward is significantly over-ranked at number 10.
Boozer was usually hurt, didn't play D and was the 3rd best PF on the roster :lol
First, a Hall of Fame career is valued more highly than team success, as was the case for Dantley and Maravich earning top-four rankings.
Dantley had team success once he had a team. I wasn't around for Pete so I can't say as much there
Second, longevity played a major role in the rankings as Eaton, Hornacek, and Hayward earned spots in the top 10 over Donovan Mitchell who was unquestionably the better player for the Jazz, with the better statistical resume.
Eaton sucked but the advanced stats tell a different story. Mitchell 2nd highest usage behind the Drugslinger. Nowhere else does he rank. Am inefficient gunner who didn't pass or play D and was lucky to play with Gobert

https://saltcityhoops.com/jazz-awards-2-roy-clutch-6moy/
Golden Griff (yeah, the man had TWO badass nicknames) would be a fine choice, too. He averaged 20.6 as a rookie, in an era before the 3-point shot was a major weapon. (He made just 10 threes all year.) Griff was the second option right away for a team that finished 28-54, and he scored just over a point per shot attempt. Don was slightly more efficient, on a much more relevant team, and at the end of the day he’s one of the best half dozen Jazz players from a historical standpoint. Someone that good just had to be memorialized somewhere on this list of fake trophies.
Griff was better no matter what Layden or Hansen think
Williams is close at 30 such shots. It should also mean something that Williams was his era’s clutch table-setter, as opposed to Okur who was more often the pressure release valve. On the other hand, Okur was beloved specifically for always being ready with these types of shots. And making THAT many super-clutch bombs when the ball wasn’t even his hands most of the time makes what Okur did even more impressive. The gap in macro quality in the historical scheme of things is narrower here than in the Griff-Mitchell case; Okur and Williams were both Jazz All-Stars.
Okur wasn't really an all star though. The commissoners choice. He didn't really deserve it did he?
Here’s what broke the tie for me: Clarkson was way more likely to TAKE the shot. He attempted 22.2 field goals per every 36 minutes of clutch play, where Olynyk took just 9.5. Being “clutch” is about more than just making the final shot; it’s at least partially defined by who teams trust enough to put the ball in their hands when the game hangs in the balance. That was Clarkson, the Jazz’s leader in total clutch points (120) and assists (18).
because Olynyk was more likely to pass to to the open man which is what you just said about Deron over Okur :facepalm
In addition to winning our fake Jazz-focused clutch award, Clarkson is also the only Jazz winner of the real 6MOY trophy. So naming a Jazz bench award after him seems like a no-brainer. The only worthy alternatives are Thurl Bailey and Joe Ingles. The former was a majority bench player for six of his eight full seasons in Utah, and averaged 15.7 points and 5.5 boards in those years. The latter had his own case for the 2021 award that Clarkson won, and was a beloved figure who brought order to Utah’s bench units for years.
Ingles should have won it and Thurl was by far a better player
That said, there’s a perception out there that Malone choked on the biggest stage, and that is blatantly unfair. He was a superb playoff performer. During an 11-year stretch dating from his first series win to the second Finals — 128 total playoff games — the Mailman averaged 27.4 points and 11.5 rebounds. In the Finals years alone, he averaged 27-10-4 and scored nearly a point and a half per shot. People will recall the “Mailman don’t deliver on Sundays” free throws and the MJ strip in 1998 Game 6 forever. But that’s an extremely small sample size against a massive body of impressive postseason work. Malone was a playoff beast.

As mentioned by Sportando, Messina and Hardy have a history together and it makes sense that they could gel quickly with styles of coaching and philosophy. It’s not sure how likely this is, but it’s something to watch and could be the next big addition to this team that could help the Jazz take things to another level next season. Considering that Alexa Jensen and Irv Roland are out it makes even more sense the Jazz would be looking for more additions.
obviously they are adding guys. Hardy inherited most of them. He's going to want his own guys. Seems like the staff is smaller than it had been for a long time too?

Like the Jazz COY section above, there’s only one GM to choose from. (Danny Ainge directs and has ideas, but Zanik is the one making the calls.) As with the COY, we could alternatively saw this exists to recognize any front office figure whose job performance enhanced the Jazz, but generally people on the outside don’t have enough understanding of who does what to allocate the “credit” appropriately. That’s fine. We’ll treat this like we did COY: a way to reflect on the collective performance of Zanik, Ainge, and everybody working behind those gents during a pivotal time from a transactional standpoint.
sounds like the owner is the one making the calls if the Clarkson stuff is true. Ainge has to be smarter than that no?
Flipping Pat Beverley for Talen Horton-Tucker already looks smart from an asset management standpoint and a get-younger-and-bigger standpoint, regardless of whether THT turns into a long-term piece.
I guess. They certainly could have used Beverley as they were shorthanded all year at the 1

If Horton-Tucker can finally string together a season-long stretch of that full potential, the Jazz could be looking at a serious co-star candidate. But his inconsistency has always been the case with him. The next step for the versatile guard is to find consistency on a nightly basis.

If the Jazz were to move up in the lottery, it would be to one of the top four draft positions. If that were to happen, I doubt Ausar would be on the team’s radar. Victor Wembanyama, Scoot Henderson, Brandon Miller, and the other Thompson, Amen, would be the likeliest candidates. And while it’s not impossible that Ausar falls to the ninth pick, it is unlikely. That means it’s unlikely that the Jazz are looking at a chance to draft Ausar Thompson. That said, the NBA Draft is weird. Trades happen, and surprising picks are common, so we shouldn’t rule it out.

https://thejnotes.com/2023/05/03/ranking-utah-jazzs-top-10-trade-assets-heading-offseason/
Heading into the offseason, Kelly Olynyk will be viewed as an asset simply based on the fact that he’s on an expiring contract for a team looking to shed some salary. What makes Olynyk more appealing as an asset is the fact that he is still a solid role player in the NBA. At only 32 years old, Olynyk is coming off a season in which he averaged 13 points, six rebounds, and four assists per game on 50 percent shooting from the field and 40 percent shooting from 3-point range.
partially guaranteed makes him even more valuable
And that’s where Utah can take advantage. Again, the Jazz isn’t likely to clean up with any sign-and-trade deal, but even adding a second-round pick or two for a player that was probably leaving anyway is a huge win.
addition by subtraction if it's Clarkson!
All that said, at the end of the day, it’s still a first-round pick. And if the Jazz wanted to make a big move at the NBA Draft, perhaps they could package this pick with another asset or two to get something done. At the very least, this pick would give the Jazz theoretical flexibility.
he'll probably try to package it with the other first(s)
It would be somewhat shocking if the Jazz traded Agbaji before they got to see his full potential, but if the right offer comes around (perhaps a future first-round pick), that would likely be something difficult for the Jazz to refuse.
seems unlikely he's going anywhere
The Gobert pairing with Karl-Anthony Towns hasn’t worked out as well as the Wolves would’ve liked it to at this point in the experiment, and there’s no guarantee that it will get better for the team. Considering the Wolves have effectively traded away their future, there’s at least a strong chance that by the time 2025 comes around, the Wolves will no longer be a playoff team in the West.
Edwards is only getting better
In fact, you can argue that a top-10 pick in this year’s NBA Draft might be enough to land a disgruntled star such as OG Anunoby. I’m not saying that’s a player the Jazz should target with this pick, but that’s an example of how valuable that pick could theoretically be.

Competing executives around the league don’t expect the Raptors to retain Gary Trent Jr., (https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10074881-2023-nba-free-agency-best-available-wings-and-their-top-landing-spots) who may opt out of his $18.8 million contract. But he’ll need to do his homework to ensure that money is available in free agency (which may not be a lock in this market). Instead, he may opt in and eventually be traded by the Raptors. Others who may have suitors include Kelly Oubre Jr. (who could end up back in Charlotte with the Hornets), Dillon Brooks (unlikely to return to the Grizzlies) and Caris LeVert (pencil back with Cleveland).

but so was the Wizard! :facepalm
These moves have set the Jazz up for success for years to come. The next big decisions for Utah will come after Draft Lottery night. Will the Jazz get lucky and jump into the top 4? If they don’t, they have their homework cut out for them looking for stars at the 9th, 16th, and 28th pick. If they find another great player with one of those picks, the Jazz will look even better with the work that Zanik has already done.

With the forward entering the offseason as a free agent, it seems unlikely that the two sides would have any interest in getting a deal done. It seems safe to say Toscano-Anderson has played his last game as a member of the Jazz.
probably but if they need another vet he wouldn't be a bad guy to have in the locker room at least
Rudy Gay is another impending free agent entering the offseason. The longtime NBA journeyman has played a couple of seasons in Utah, but after the trades of Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert, it seemed inevitable for the forward to move on at some point.
player option. He's likely with the Jazz at least until the trade deadline
The center was a key role player for the Jazz this year, but the timeline for the team and the former No. 16 overall pick don’t exactly line up. Fortunately for Ainge, Olynyk’s play this past year only increased his trade value. (https://thejnotes.com/2023/05/03/ranking-utah-jazzs-top-10-trade-assets-heading-offseason/) There’s no way to know for sure whether or not he will be back with the Jazz, but the writing seems to be on the wall: If teams inquire, the Jazz will likely listen to offers.

Utah ranked fifth in three-point attempts last season but just 20th in percentage. If Strus can get back to shooting near 40% at high volume, that would be a major win for the Jazz.
need wings. Maybe
Obviously, there’s a sense of unknown when signing a player from overseas, but the Jazz took that risk last season when they brought in Simone Fontecchio. Why not take a chance on one of Markkanen’s Finnish teammates?
is he even on the NBA radar? Simone was one of the top players at the World Cup and Italy's best player. Also has size and can shoot. 6'2 guys aren't in demand
As things stand, the Jazz don’t have a go-to starting point guard, so bringing White on board would give them a great option, especially considering he’s only 23 years old.
Sexton? White could be alright off the bench but I'd rather have a vet like Dunn

https://www.slcdunk.com/nba-draft/2023/5/6/23706786/2023-nba-draft-player-profile-gradey-dick-utah-jazz
The main weakness Dick has isn’t so much of a fatal flaw in his game but more of a lack of being the kind of elite talent a team might be looking for in the lottery. Teams and fans like to see superstar potential in lottery picks and Dick doesn’t really have that. He lacks top-flight athleticism, a quick first step, length, ball-handling, elite passing, ability to draw fouls and so forth. There’s no doubt that he’s a shot-maker, but can he be truly elite? He’s more likely to be a Gordon Hayward or Bojan Bogdanovic, to use former Jazz player comparisons, than he is an All-NBA caliber scorer.
big difference between Hayward and Bojan. Bojan was a scorer and shooter period
There’s a trend among mock draft writers that the Jazz are in the market for a point guard, making Anthony Black and Carson Wallace more likely options. But don’t underestimate the chance Utah surprises people with who they fall in love with.

Speaking of Alex Jensen, Scotto also reports that Quin Snyder of the Atlanta Hawks (https://www.peachtreehoops.com) is looking to add the Jensen to his coaching staff in Atlanta.
this may have had something to do with Jensen being let go to begin with?
Jensen spent eight seasons as an assistant coach under Snyder in Utah. Bailey was an assistant coach during Snyder’s final two seasons in Utah and previously during the 2019-20 season. Kokosov spent three seasons in Utah as one of Snyder’s assistant coaches before becoming head coach in Phoenix for one season and then one season each as an assistant with Sacramento, Dallas, and Brooklyn. Lang spent five seasons as an assistant coach under Snyder from 2014-19 and has spent the past four seasons in Cleveland.
Igor was his top assistant before getting a head job
Will Hardy has already had a massive impact on improving the culture and play in Utah and it will be interesting to see how the Jazz continue to grow as a team and coaching staff. Will they continue to develop players like last season? Will things be different with these new coaches? There’s a lot that can be attributed to the former staff and the hope is you can keep the positives while leaving behind the things that didn’t make the team better.
like the Bum? He's the one guy that would completely change everything about the team. Was such a pleasure to watch them when he was out!

If Scoot Henderson or Brandon Miller found their way to Utah, they’d both have a team that was ready to support their star turn without demanding instant impact. Neither would be expected to lead the Jazz to the playoffs anytime soon, but both would have the ball in their hands for most of their early careers, which could lead to a contending Jazz team in a half-decade.
makes some sense with the difference in age between Lauri and their two rooks

Kelly Iko: Now, if this was last season, a top-five pick is as good as anything. There are teams [interested]. For example, the Raptors have already called. There are teams that still believe that No. 4 is a pretty good pick. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-athletic-nba-show/id1358187061?i=1000614688195) And there are teams that are going to want to acquire that pick, but I’m just speaking in the sense of teams that have win-now veterans. What is the calculus about? Do we think, Amen Thompson or Ausar Thompson are going to really push the needle?

Utah has come away convinced that a good player will be available when it picks at the No. 9 spot. Also, the Jazz are optimistic about the value of the draft when they pick at No. 16 and No. 28. They feel that the draft is deep enough that they can add impactful talent at all three of their draft positions. Ideally, they want to add a lead ballhandler at some point in the draft. But, they won’t draft for fit at the expense of talent.
always impactful talent wherever you pick. Anyone heard of Gobert or Millsap or...? Not sure what that says about Sexton? Maybe get a big pg that can play with Sexton? Might see him as more of a 6th man?
The clarity will be good for the front office. They will know where they will be picking. They will gather intel on who could be available and where. And, once the front office leaves Chicago when the combine ends, expect the Jazz to bring in a slew of prospects into Salt Lake City for individual workouts in order to get a look at guys in their own building. What the Jazz need is a No. 1 option. They need as much length relative to position as possible. And they need as much talent as possible. How much they can get in this draft remains to be seen. But, after Tuesday, they will have a good idea of where they stand.
let's hope they go with talent over length. The Wizard's love of length lost him his job!
The difficulty comes in how the Jazz, and any NBA team for that matter, find that player. Historically for the Jazz, they have gotten their number one option in the draft. They may be able to get that #1 option by trade but it’s never coming by way of free agency.
you don't know that. If Jalen Brown wants out of Boston I imagine he would consider going to play for Ainge again. Jazz would become a top team instantly. Trust in Danny

The question is, would the Jazz be willing to essentially eject on this draft in an attempt to add a future first? If so, the Spurs could be in business. San Antonio could theoretically send Devonte’ Graham, the 33rd overall pick (second-round) in this year’s NBA Draft, and a 2025 first-round pick (via Chicago) to the Jazz for the 9th pick. It may not be enough, but it’s probably the framework of a package that keeps Utah on the line.
can't see that one happening unless it is unprotected and they think that draft is better

Physicality was one of the things the Jazz struggled to contend with last season. At times, Jazz coach Will Hardy (https://www.deseret.com/2023/4/8/23671989/will-hardy-utah-jazzs-success) was playing Udoka Azubuike (https://www.deseret.com/2023/4/23/23691315/utah-jazz-grades-juan-toscano-anderson-udoka-azubuike) in meaningful minutes just so the Jazz would have a stronger body on the floor.
the fact that Udoka has played well the past two years when he's got in the game has something to do with it I imagine too
It’s hard for me to imagine the Jazz trading into the second round. If they want good, young talent that they are going to spend time developing, they have the ninth, 16th and 28th overall picks in the draft. So, why not take a first-rounder.
don't want 3 rookies? Prefer two high 2nds to a late first? Many reasons
I’m not even certain that the Jazz will be making a deal with their draft picks though. This draft class is so deep that it wouldn’t shock me if the Jazz stick with at least two, if not all three, of their first-round picks.
Doesn't sound like Ainge would be having much fun

The Mavericks likewise expected former Magic and Hornets coach James Borrego to land on the Pelicans’ bench, as covered here May 8, so Saturday’s news that Borrego was indeed New Orleans-bound was another non-surprise in Dallas. Former Mavericks assistant Terry Stotts is likewise no longer an option after the former Hawks, Bucks and Blazers head coach agreed to return to Milwaukee as a member of Adrian Griffin’s staff. The Mavericks remain interested in former Suns and Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek to potentially join Kidd’s staff, league sources say, as I reported here on April 30 (https://marcstein.substack.com/p/theres-more-from-the-nba-coaching).

At the very least I like we're taking guys who have modern skills sets. Taylor Hendricks especially could be important because as good as Kessler is, he still may have that Rudy problem of getting played off the court in playoff basketball. Hendricks could be the perfect guy you bust out as a small ball 5 and still get some shot blocking with the added shooting.
Nice change from the "We need to use our 1st rounded to cover the 8 minutes a game Rudy doesn't play with an exact clone of him, rather than an obvious weakness" drafting from 4 years ago.

Kessler still has to show he can guard in space. Gobert's problem is he never had a Henricks or even Lauri or Olynyk other than Favors in the corner from 3! Quin getting rid of his big for the guy he benched and pissed off two years ago. Maybe O'Neale is available? He'd actually be a great fit with Hardy too. Plays hard and unselfishly.

Dang, got Collins on the cheap. I know Ainge has been chasing him for awhile and while he shot poorly last year he was back up to that 38% mark post All-Star game, so hopefully that's a sign his finger isn't an issue any longer. All reports are he's a great locker room guy too, which will be a bonus since Gay was supposedly a grumbler whenever he didn't get minutes. Doubt we had any immediate needs for the cap space, so assuming he doesn't take his player option it's a 2 year deal for him, which will round off just as we got a few guys like Lauri to re-sign. At worst he takes his player option and he's off the books when Sexton, Agbaji and Kessler are due for deals.

sounds like he's the guy they've wanted for a while and to only give up a 2nd and cap space while getting rid of Gay! Another versatile big to plug in with all the others now. Maybe they can unlock something like they did with Lauri. They going to let Olynyk go now? Partial guarantee. Doesn't sound like Sexton is in their long term plans. They want to get bigger at the 1. They want George at pg eventually it sounds like. I'm guessing Lauri and Collins will be gone as well if someone like Donic becomes available Their 3 rookies and last years rookies are on a different timeline than Lauri.

looks like Juzang and Potter will get a chance to come back. Juzang seems more likely because he's more of a wing. He also got a lot more run at the end of the year with the Jazz. Doesn't look like an NBAer except his body. Don't have much room for any bigs on the roster right now. With the 3 firsts they will be looking for two more 2-way players and more exhibit 10/camp/Stars bodies. The 1st and 3rd pick coming off injuries. Might be cautious with them. George should play unless they want to throw him in a trade

I'm thinking Olynyk and Clarkson are gone. Doesn't make much sense to have them back. Olynyk might make it to the trade deadline but he's at best their 4th big now no matter what the rooks do. Samanic could fill that role a lot cheaper and Jones is ok after that. The guy they drafted sounds like Clarkson but 19 and hopefully teachable.
I would think they'd be looking guard for the rest of their cap space plus Olynyk possibly Talen and ideally Simone. They have a bunch of smaller trade exceptions and of course all of the 1sts!
Tony Brown might fit. Looks like he's starting to get it at 23. Ty Jerome maybe? Probably get him. GS has their tax issue as always! Love to see Alec Burks back with COTM gone but I think Detroit likes him. Ingles in a minor role on a minimum but not sure he can play guard anymore. House would fit great with Hardy too.

The Celtics summer-league roster will feature former first-round pick Udoka Azubuike, according to a team source who was granted anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record. (https://theathletic.com/4649991/2023/06/29/celtics-nba-summer-league-udoka-azubuike/?source=emp_shared_article) Azubuike spent his first three seasons in the league with the Utah Jazz. Agbaji will have a real shot at cracking the Jazz’s rotation this fall, and being able to handle heavier minutes while knocking down the three-point shot consistently will be key.
if he's not in the rotation he'll be on another team. I'd say he's the starting 2. The Bum will be coming off the bench again

It’s safe to say that this frontcourt core of the early 2010s never worked out too well for Utah. Luckily, the Jazz ended up drafting eventual DPOY Rudy Gobert in the offseason the lost Jefferson, so maybe it worked out for the best in the end?
should have never aquired the low effiency black hole. They had Millsap. Should have went after Chandler
Imagine how Dell would’ve fit in with the Jazz’s Finals teams in the 90s, or how he would’ve looked getting a ton of open looks from Hall of Fame John Stockton. However, the Jazz decided that a washed Darryl Dawkins was a better fit for the team.
they key here is they traded him because of Hansen who sucked
Yeah, it’s safe to say that this was one of the worst draft night trades in NBA history. If the Jazz decided to keep Wilkins, they could’ve entered the 1983 season with a core of Dominique Wilkins, Darrell Griffith, Adrian Dantley, and Mark Eaton. Instead, they traded for a 28-year-old forward with a drug issue.
you forgot the million that kept the team in Utah. Had Dantley who was the better player

The shooting sucked but there were some positives.
I thought Carey Jr. looked good. He could be a senior in college still! Potter played hard. Samanic didn't look as good in an increased role as he did last year. Hauser may have to work on a higher release like Ingles. Elite shooter in college but had at least one blocked. Ross showed something too. Might see him in camp/stars?

Samanic was great throughout this one. I like Carey too. George was great in the first half but kind of disappeared before getting hurt towards the end. Says he'll play today. The biggest fear for NBA teams during Summer League is the potential of a rookie suffering an injury. That fear was realized for the Utah Jazz on Wednesday when Keyonte George rolled his ankle just before halftime of the Jazz’s bout against the Denver Nuggets (https://www.deseret.com/2023/7/12/23792987/utah-jazz-keyonte-george-suffers-ankle-injury-during-game-at-las-vegas-summer-league). Now the Jazz wait with bated breath to know the severity of the injury, which is believed to be an ankle sprain. Adding to the problem is the fact that George sprained the same ankle in February while at Baylor.

Look deep if the other two rookies contribute. Need some depth at the 2. George looks like a pg to me. I'd say ideally they go into camp with Sexton or some other starting capiable 1 and let George earn the back-up spot which I think he will based on what I saw of the kid. Dunn would be a great 3rd pg for George and Sexton. Talen-Horton is a unique talent but he needs the ball and until he can consistently do what he did a couple nights late last year and/or use that incredible length to be a lot better on D he'll have to go. He's young but I don't see him making much sense now. He wasn't in the rotation last year until Conley was traded. He is still young. Ideally moved before camp I'd think. And by the trade deadline you might look to move Sexton if George is pushing him? Olynyk too if Hendricks and Sensabaugh make noise. I'd expect Hendricks too pretty quickly as well. Need 2 more two way guys which I'd guess they might sign one after summer league. Let the other one be fought for in camp? Maybe some more partial guarantees and let them fight it out in camp.

After being drafted 19th overall in 2019, Samanic struggled for two years in the San Antonio Spurs’ system. After multiple G League assignments and very few NBA minutes, the Spurs waived Samanic. Samanic admitted to lacking maturity, confidence and the work ethic needed to stick in the NBA through his first two years. While Samanic has been doing his best to work on his dribbling, shooting and trying to become a more versatile defender without Markkanen in Utah, when the Jazz’s Finnish star was able to come to Utah for a short stint this summer, Samanic took full advantage of the situation. “Lauri was here for a week, so whatever he was doing, I was just trying to copy, honestly,” Samanic said. Kelly is the same way with the way he plays — they can handle the ball, and being so big but they can still do the guard things.”

Right now I'd think Dunn and either Samanic and/or Yurtseven 2 of the final roster spots but I'd guess they are trying to move either Talen or Sexton if not Olynyk and probably Simone too. Talen makes more sense to me. Expiring deal, young and unique. Should be able to move him. Sexton is a starting caliber 1. Make George beat him or another NBA starting caliber pg for the spot. However, while the Jazz were 24-24 with Sexton in the rotation, they were only 6-9 in his 15 starts, and clearly missed a more traditional offensive initiator.
It was a less talented team when he was starting. No Vanderbilt or Beasley not to mention Conley. Guys that had been out of the rotation were now in it
Sexton’s offensive efficiency and overall production are difficult to dispute, but he may be the least natural playmaker in the Jazz’s backcourt, which could make him better served as a high-scoring sixth man.
Less naturally than the Bum?
Dunn is an old school pg and George seems to be playmaker as well. Not sure I'd put him over Sexton yet who learned a lot from Conley. Talen Horton certainly isn't the playmaker he is
While Sexton may be the slight favorite to start at point guard, Clarkson is the likely favorite overall to earn one of the two starting backcourt positions.
let's hope it's Agbaji. Bad enough just having The Bum on the roster yet again
And yet, the team’s coaching staff seemed to favor playing Clarkson off the ball, where he recorded nearly two-thirds of his minutes as a shooting guard.
don't have much choice but to play him off the ball. No one else would ever touch the ball otherwise
It’s hard to see the Jazz pushing Clarkson back to the bench after signing him to a three-year extension based largely on his strong play last season, but he may not be the best fit as the lead initiator.
not really. Agbaji is the future and the better shooter and defender. No brainer to me. The Bum is a 6th man. Makes no sense otherwise if you think he makes any sense which I don't
Clarkson is still a good-but-not-great three-point shooter knocking down 33 percent of his attempts last season, though, at 7.5 attempts per game, his raw volume is more than double the next closest candidate to start at point guard.
33 might have been good in 1980
However, he shot just 43 percent from the floor and 32 percent from the three-point line despite an enormous usage rate, and the Jazz went just 7-12 with him starting.
just 32 is one percentage point different than the 33 you called good! :facepalm
Horton-Tucker shined brightest when he was handed the ball and given the green light, but with better talent and more efficient scorers in the frontcourt, the Jazz simply don’t need a player to occupy that role.
he should be a 6th man for another team
It’s safe to say that had Dunn held that production over the length of the season, he’d be the odds-on favorite to start at point guard, and the Jazz would be in good hands with him at the helm.
no he wouldn't. They were playing Sexton and Talen over him. Their best perimeter defender, their best playmaker, he can finish and if he's hitting open shots he's hard to keep off the floor. He should be at least their 3rd pg
Throw in the fact that his age doesn’t perfectly fit the team’s timeline, and the Jazz have no long-term obligations to the veteran, and there are plenty of reasons why Dunn shouldn’t be starting next season.
about the same age as Lauri I think. The Bum's age is another issue
While George seemed to have very little odds of earning a starting spot after slipping to the Jazz with the 16th pick in the draft, his standout play during Summer League has to have given him a puncher’s chance.
most had him going later
The guard likely won’t start for the Jazz on opening night, but with his rapid development and high upside, he could earn a starting job before the season is through.
I'd guess he's the backup and if he's pushing Sexton he'll be starting by the trade deadline
If John Collins continues to struggle to shoot the ball as he did last season, a guard who can reliably space the floor will be at a premium.
Need more shooting regardless especially if the Bum is starting

I’m starting to believe in Keyonte George as a point guard. I, like many, had my doubts at first, but even in only three games he’s shown me enough to think that he could really develop into a great pass-first, perimeter threat who is able to run an offense.

https://saltcityhoops.com/get-to-know-omer-yurtseven/
The Jazz still had one remaining roster spot, with roughly $2.8 million of cap space left as well as a $7.7 million salary cap exception. It seemed clear that they wanted to target another center to have on the roster. After renouncing the rights to Udoka Azubuike and then trading Damian Jones to Cleveland for cash, there was an obvious need for another big man. They first offered Paul Reed Jr. a fascinating “poison pill” contract, where a large amount of money in the second and third years of the deal would only become guaranteed if his team won in the first round of the playoffs during the 2023-24 season. That was designed to deter the Sixers who are much more likely to advance in next year’s playoffs, but they they still chose to match the deal at the last second.
hadn't saw that about Udoka but certainly not unexpected. Not sure how obvious the need for another big was considering they have 2 shooting guards and one is The Bum!
That leads us to the first real splash for the Utah Jazz in free agency. News surfaced Sunday that they were signing Turkish big man Yurtseven, a 25-year-old and third-year pro. The first-year salary is $2.8 million, but is only half guaranteed at $1.4. The second-year of the contract is a team option for $2.7 million.
so he's probably on the roster at least until contracts become guaranteed
My expectation is for Yurtseven to be the third center in the rotation. Walker Kessler will be the clear starter, with Kelly Olynyk being the primary backup. Lauri Markkanen and John Collins will also likely see time at the center position in certain lineups. That leaves Yurtseven largely out of the rotation. He is a wonderful insurance policy though. If either Kessler or Olynyk struggle with injuries, he has shown more than capable as a player who can step in and provide productive minutes to avoid a major drop-off in team performance. For a center signed this late into free agency and at the minimum, this was a solid pick-up for the Jazz.
you forgot the rooks. I'd expect Hendricks to at least be in the mix as a Vanderbilt type energy guy

https://saltcityhoops.com/the-devils-in-the-salary-cap-details/
The other way to look at it is that Clarkson opted IN and then got a total of $37.6M in new money for two additional years of his services. That’s an $18.8M annual value on the new years, which is already a really good figure. (Consider that role players like Dillon Brooks and Bruce Brown got more than that per year on new deals.) But what makes that $18.8M/yr. look even better is the fact that shifting $9.2M to this year’s cap sheet allows Utah to pay him just $28.4M over the final two years of the deal.
hopefully by the trade deadline someone else will be paying it!
Either way you choose to look at it, Clarkson’s cap numbers after this year ($14.1M and $14.3M) could make him one of the best non-rookie contracts in the league. If the cap jumps as much as expected to by 2025-26, Clarkson will head into the 2025 offseason at still just 33 and with a contract that is essentially for midlevel exception money. If his production is anywhere close to last season’s level, that contract is going to be a massive asset.
don't see him as an asset on a minimum contract. He is an awful, ball player
The Jazz then slid Omer Yurtseven into their last remaining cap space ($2.8M). This is meaningful because it keeps the “room midlevel” exception intact. We’ll come back to that exception later.
had already read they were over the cap before this move?
As for Yurtseven himself, he’s… interesting. He only played 83 minutes last season, but as a Miami rookie he put up per-36 figures of 15-and-15, and his rim protection figures (.588 opponent field goal percentage at the rim) were pretty solid. The Jazz have a lot of flexible frontcourt pieces, but only had one true center on the roster before this deal, so Yurtseven will add depth there. Kelly Olynyk probably goes to camp penciled in as the second-unit center, but if Walker Kessler were ever to miss any time, the Jazz would probably take comfort in knowing that they have a traditional center option in reserve.
one true center and a few other guys around 7' :lol
So what can they do with $7.7M? Granted, the free agent list is a little picked over (https://saltcityhoops.com/the-jazz-fit-of-every-nba-free-agent/) at this point, but that’s probably OK given the roster math. Utah stands at 15 standard contracts and three two-ways, meaning anybody they add now requires them to waive (or trade) someone before late October. They’re probably only doing that if there’s a clear upgrade they could nab with the $7.7M room MLE.
who's the other two way? Potter is still restricted FA as far as I know? I can see bringing in more guys on partial deals and let them all fight it out. Same with the final two way spot. They only have 12 guaranteed contracts and the 2 two ways
The other option is to hang onto it and see what needs develop later. Any “buyer”-style trade the Jazz make from here is likely to be a multiple-for-1 deal that would leave some roster spots open. One way to use the room MLE is to take some shots on minimum-level players, but for more years than the actual minimum salary exception allows.
good to have during buyout season when others only have minimum to offer
By virtue of the renegotiation-and-extension he just signed, Clarkson can’t be traded until January 7. Yurtseven can’t be traded until December 15 because of his new contract, and the three first-round rookies can’t be traded until August 2. (Joey Hauser technically and Johnny Juzang can’t be traded until August either, but two-way contracts rarely get traded at all.)
has a two way ever been traded?
Hauser, Juzang and Micah Potter have small guarantees associated with their two-way contracts ($75K or less), but those deals don’t count against the cap. They could be cut at any time without impacting Utah’s cap sheet.
Jazz haven't cut many. They stick with them
Kelly Olynyk and Talen Horton-Tucker can both sign extensions starting August or at any point during the season, but the educated guess here is that the Jazz will take the wait-and-see approach with those expiring contracts.
can't imagine either will be here long

https://saltcityhoops.com/who-should-start-at-point-guard-for-the-jazz/
There are two big questions for Sexton going forward though. First, for as great of a scorer he can be, can he orchestrate a productive offense? Sexton has a career assist average of 3.2 per game, compared to his career turnover average of 2.4. Per Cleaning the Glass, his career assist to usage rate percentage has been in the bottom 30 percent for his position since entering the NBA. That’s not great for a lead point guard. In the two seasons that Sexton averaged over 20 points per game for the Cavs, their Offensive Rating ranked 26th and 28th in the NBA, and they finished a combined 41-96. In the year he mostly missed due to injury, Cleveland’s offense was better when he sat. It’s worth monitoring how he impacts Utah’s overall efficiency.
was at like 6 assists a game last year as the starter. He learned a lot from Conley. He's the starter if he's here.
Second, if Sexton is a great scorer but not a great facilitator, he may simply better suited to a sixth man role like Clarkson in the previous iteration of the team. Will Hardy could give him the ultimate green light and he can become the Jazz’s scorer off the bench. In the 15 games he started last season, Sexton averaged 16.5 points and 4.8 assists, and the Jazz went 6-9. In seven minutes less off the bench, he still averaged 13.2 points, and the Jazz went 24-24.
again you're basically comparing two different teams. Much different team after trade deadline. I think the reason he might be better as a 6th man is because I'm not sure he stay healthy. He's starting caliber if he can stay on the court
People seem to forget that THT is still somehow only 22 years old! There were four rookies drafted in the first round of this most recent draft that are older than him. While he definitely has some flaws and areas of opportunity, he is young enough for optimism that he has a real shot to improve those areas.
George is 19 and Sexton 23 so his age isn't helping him
The most interesting thing to me on THT is how he performed depending on what his role was last season. In games that he played greater than 30 minutes, he averaged 21 points, 6.5 assist and 6 rebounds. In 20-29 minutes, he averaged 13.5 points, 5 assists and 4.1 rebounds. In games where he played less than 20 minutes, his averages dipped to 6 points, 2.4 assists and 1.1 rebounds. Simply put, THT is not one of those players who can fit into any role. He seems to need larger minutes and usage to impact games. During the final 24 games of the season, he had a usage rate of 29.9 percent! During that same time, Markkanen had a usage rate of 30.5 percent. Markkanen also averaged 28.2 points with THT having that high usage and production, so his usage wasn’t taking away from the All-Star.
has to have the ball in his hands. Limits him if he can't develop an off the ball game
As with Sexton, there are legitimate conerns, starting with the fact that Utah may not be the best version of itself with THT being the second highest usage rate player. That was mostly an anomally because Clarkson and Sexton were out with injuries, and if the current Jazz team is healthy he’ll have to yield some touches to those other guards as well as now Collins. Because he’s not a consistent threat from three, he doesn’t always draw a lot of attention unless he has the tall. THT is a career 28 percent three-point shooter, but he was able to up that to 32 percent on four attempts per game with the Jazz. His ability to be productive as a spot-up shooter and not just a primary ball-handler may be the difference between his ability to gain the starting role or not. Again though, at only 22 years old and in a contract year, THT could put up a productive season if given the opportunity.
and George. He's got to get better on D with his length and size too
There’s still some uncertainty about his best NBA position. The Jazz clearly want to turn him into a lead guard type at his size, which why I have really watched his Summer League play to gauge his ability to be more than a scorer. In order to start at point guard, he’d have to show the Jazz he can run an offense as a facilitator and creator for others, rather than just for himself. We know he is going to be able to score, but in college he had a negative assist-to-turnover ratio: 95 turnovers to just 91 assists. So far in this Summer League, he has answered that question loud and clear. In five games, he has racked up 30 assists to just 10 turnovers, including his incredible 33-point game verses the Clippers where he also had 10 dimes. (He had two assists and one turnover before exiting Wednesday’s game.)
looks like a 1 to me. Already a better playmaker than Mitchell ever was
Ultimately though, very few 19-year-old rookies are in a position to make an immediate and positive impact on a team hoping to get to the playoffs. Key appears to have bright future ahead of him, but it is rare that a rookie point guard has a positive impact on winning right away. A real concern would be how he will hold up on the defensive end. Already in the Summer League, we have seen him struggle with awareness and getting through and around screens. Those aren’t things that are surprising for any rookie, but if you want him to be the starter from day one, you may also have to be okay with the Jazz having some growing pains that will impact their win-loss record.
good effort on D anyway!
Personally, I’d love to see the Jazz give the reins to Horton-Tucker and see how much of his late-season push is sustainable. He is only 22 years old and showed real flashes of sustained success over the final quarter of the season. He is a better passer than people realize, he is a great rebounder for the point guard position, and he has the length and strength to be a plus defender guarding multiple positions.
unless his off the ball game and/or D has improved he's the 4th option. Dunn wasn't even mentioned and he's the only two way guy! The best playmaker and best perimeter defender on the team
The Jazz may not have a star point guard on the roster. (Not yet anyway, check back on George in 2-3 years.) What they do have plenty of solid options available to them. It’ll be interesting to see which of the multiple options will step up during training camp and preseason to seize the reins.
Sexton has put up all star numbers. Maybe check up on him in 2 or 3 months

https://saltcityhoops.com/what-to-watch-for-in-summer-league/
My major early summer league overreaction is that I would permanently put Luka Samanic in my rotation as Lauri Markkanen's primary small forward backup….I truly think he can play
— Tony Jones (@Tjonesonthenba) July 4, 2023 (https://twitter.com/Tjonesonthenba/status/1676039268400234497?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)
more 7 footers playing out of position should help their awful D! :facepalm
The Jazz have a lot of bigs and a lot of guards, but they are missing the in-between. I know Markkanen is capable of playing SF, but let’s be honest, it’s not his natural position. Which means we are left with Simone Fontecchio as being the only true SF on the roster. I’m not sure who I prefer more as our backup SF, but the 6’8″ Fontecchio will turn 28 early this next season, while the 6’10” Samanic will turn 24.
I'd say in today's game Simone is more of a small ball 4 at least on any other team but the Jazz
If he can, then he and Fontecchio are going to have a fun pre-season battle to see who can lock up those backup small forward minutes for the Jazz next regular season.
you're forgetting the rookies. I doubt Simone is in the rotation. He was out of it last year until the trade deadline. Samanic looks like a rotation player but again how many bigs should you actually be playing?
The question is can he be more than just a cutter and spot-up three-point shooter on offense? Early on as a rookie, I wouldn’t expect much more from him because it’s just not going to be asked from him. Especially with the other talented players on the Jazz roster. In the Summer League though? Prime opportunity to show the team if he is capable of doing more offensively with a higher usage. I want to see if he can create shot opportunities for himself off the dribble. He is an elite athlete, who should be able to to take advantage of other bigs trying to defend him on the wing. I think Hendricks has the ability to play small forward, power forward and center. Depending on the position he is asked to play, I’d love to see how he adapts his game to take advantage of his versatility. We haven’t been able to see him yet as he is recovering from a right hamstring strain, but he has been practicing and is only listed as day-to-day, which makes me believe he will at least be able to play in the Vegas Summer League.
might be playing the 2 since that is where they have the least amount of depth currently and that they apparently think it's the 80's again

https://www.slcdunk.com/research-statistics-analytics/2023/7/20/23802596/when-will-keyonte-george-start-at-point-guard-for-the-utah-jazz-nba-offseason-2023
The question for the Utah Jazz (https://www.slcdunk.com) is, when will Keyonte George get on the floor? We’ve been told that Will Hardy hates to have players get on the floor solely because they’re highly touted rookies, he wants them to earn it. This is absolutely the right attitude and will set players up to play without entitlement to a starting position. It’s a core part of building a winning culture.
you mean no more playing time for guys just because they coach went to the same school?
This might be the biggest test for Hardy and the coaching staff this season. Last season, the Jazz traded away veteran players that paved the way for younger, more unproven prospects, a chance to get minutes. It proved to be highly successful as we saw the rise of Walker Kessler and Ochai Agbaji. But what happens when those players aren’t traded away? How will that go? This season the Jazz have a lot more options at guard, and they want to win. If Keyonte George is going to play, he’s going to have to prove himself to be the best option to start.
more options than last year when they got multiple guys that are in the league now? :facepalm
Collin Sexton: Like Clarkson, Sexton also improved as the season went on as a passer, and Sexton continued his efficiency scoring the ball. The deficiencies for Sexton come with his size, which hurts his defense, and the occasional blinders on offense. Sexton is willing to make the pass but sometimes his size, and mentality, seem to keep him from making all the right reads. George already has a size advantage as well as passing prowess over Sexton. The most likely starting unit for the Jazz is Sexton and Clarkson starting because of their experience, Hardy will know what he’s getting. But it’s going to be hard to keep Geroge off the floor with his passing and shooting. Because George has better size and length, he can also be a better defender. If the defense comes along quickly for George, it’s going to be an obvious decision for Hardy to start George at point guard.
I'd be shocked if Sexton isn't starting if he's on the team. Not many have put up 24 a game for any stretch
Kris Dunn: Dunn was a big surprise for Utah last season and earned a well-deserved contract. Dunn has a chance to be an important part of the team, but there are limits to his offensive game. To his credit, he’s shown an ability to knock down shots, but he isn’t a high-level shooter. His defense is undoubtedly better than George right now, but George might just be so special that it doesn’t matter.
he can finish as well.
strange how everyone thinks this is a question. I think there's little question if Sexton is on the team. By the trade deadline it may be George. We'll see...

Not super likely for him to start at the beginning of the year (but it’s not impossible) but it’s very likely that Keyonte George is in the rotation to start the year and the Jazz are big on his potential and future.
pretty obvious
It may be difficult for Taylor Hendricks to find time to play with how deep the Jazz frontcourt is. The combination of defense, size and shooting for Hendricks is unique and should eventually get him time on the floor.
energy guy. Be hard to keep him off the floor I'd think especially since they don't care how big they play

At the moment, Sexton stands as the best shooter out of the potential guard core. Having not been that far off of a 50/40/90 season (he only shot 81% on free throws), he would add spacing to Utah’s starting lineup. This, combined with his ability to attack the basket, could help bend defenses and provide opportunities for him to create for others. Defenses have to respect him, and Sexton showed some ability with passes like this:
yeah 80 is pretty much 90 :lol
Frankly, Sexton doesn’t have a great history of playing as a facilitator. He’s never averaged more than 3.3 assists per game in his career and can get caught in tunnel vision. He’ll get out of control and try to make something out of nothing. Sometimes that leads to forced passes like this (apologies for the poor quality on this one):
he looked like a pg to me last year. Conley schooled him well
For Horton-Tucker, the most obvious pros are related to his physical size and athleticism. He’s 6’4” with a 7 foot wingspan and can play above the rim, something the other potential point guards on this roster can’t do. This gives him an advantage when operating in the pick and roll, since he’s more able to look over the defense, pressure the rim, and make difficult passes.
George and maybe Dunn too are as tall :facepalm
But with the turnovers aside, if it were up to me, I would probably try starting Horton-Tucker at the point guard due to his size and athleticism. A lineup of THT-Clarkson-Markkanen-Collins-Kessler has strong switch-ability on defense and would be one of the most athletic first-fives in the league.
He was behind Conley and Sexton last year and probably behind Butler if he didn't have guaranteed money. Now he should be starting because he has length he doesn't use well defensively? :facepalm
At this point in his career in his career, Dunn won’t get significantly better as a basketball player. He is nearly 30 years old, has bounced around the league the last few seasons, and still has a questionable jumpshot. I just don’t buy that he’s become a deadeye shooter over the last year, although I’d love to be proven wrong.
doesn't have to be a dead eye. Just has to hit open shots when the defense leaves him open. If they guard him he can finish at the rim or create for someone else. He's the guy Rubio was supposed to be!
On top of that, there is an argument that playing Dunn could cost you the opportunity to develop Collin Sexton, Talen Horton-Tucker, or Keyonte George. Do the Jazz really want to invest these minutes into a player who doesn’t fit within their long-term plans?
if your trying to win games which they were last year and with the addition of Collins I assume this year as well

Another potential con that the Jazz could run into is the fact that, in the eyes of some, Herro could essentially be viewed as a duplicate of Jordan Clarkson. They are similar players in that they are offensive talents but you can probably argue that Herro’s ceiling is a bit higher than Clarkson’s ever was.

https://thejnotes.com/2023/07/23/kris-dunn-may-not-be-around-long-term-with-the-utah-jazz/
The Utah Jazz have (https://thejnotes.com/2023/07/22/bleacher-report-names-6-most-improved-teams-but-are-the-utah-jazz-one-of-them/) a log jam at point guard. They have at least four players, maybe even five, who are trying to win the starting position. You have Collin Sexton, Talen Horton-Tucker, Keyonte George, and Kris Dunn. Then you have Jordan Clarkson, who is also in the running, but also has the shooting guard spot locked down in the event the Jazz don’t want to go down that route.
The Bum at the 1!
The Jazz are at 15 players on their main roster heading into the regular season, with three players on two-way contracts. That’s not to mention any last-second interest in a player like John Wall or Christian Wood. If there is, that would mean the Jazz would likely part ways with either Luka Samanic or Dunn, as both have partially guaranteed contracts only.
Yuretsan or Samanic is more likely
What may save him, however, is the team deciding to go defense first. Utah Jazz head coach Will Hardy has been on record in the past talking about the defense, specifically the many-to-man defense. Hardy was quoted as saying it was “horrendous”, (https://www.si.com/nba/jazz/news/utah-jazz-kris-dunn-claim-salt-lake) and that’s not going to get any better with Sexton or Clarkson running point.
he's the vet. He stays. Talen and Sexton are basically the same age and making a lot of money. One of them ideally goes. Talen makes most sense as the roster stands
So while it makes sense to hand the reigns to one so they can run the offense, it could be a situation that Dunn makes the most sense to start for the team. Then again, Dunn may not get the chance if a trade happens, or if the Jazz end up being rumored to be interested in one of the more prominent free agents that are left.
a rumor will cost him his job? :oldlol:

https://thejnotes.com/2023/07/23/should-the-utah-jazz-bring-gordon-hayward-this-season/
The Utah Jazz have a very interesting roster at the moment. Right now they’re swarmed with point guards, power forwards, and big men as a whole. The team truthfully only has one true small forward, Italy’s Simone Fontecchio. He’s currently listed on EPSN.com as a backup to Lauri Markkanen, a more natural power forward. Also backing up Markkanen is Talen Horton-Tucker, who’s barely 6’2. There’s also Brice Sensabaugh, a true but slow small forward who continues to rehab from off-season knee surgery.
they played 3 guards last year but Talen can pretty much only play at the 1. Ochai?
Knee injuries are not the career enders they used to be but they do still take a while to fully heal. Perfect example, look at Ricky Rubio’s return this past season. He never looked right when he came back for the Cleveland Cavaliers, so it’s possible that Sensabaugh may not be nearly ready to go this season.
DTD :facepalm
Hence why the idea of Gordon Hayward coming in isn’t a bad one. Hayward’s arrival would likely mean the end of the tenures of Horton-Tucker and backup big Kelly Olynyk, but that may not be the worst thing. With John Collins and now Omer Yurtseven on the roster, they no longer need Olynyk, so a trade makes sense.
Hendricks and Samanic
Hayward can then move Markkanen back to the four, Collins comes off the bench as the sixth man gets 28-30 minutes a game, and the Jazz gets a reliable shooter. Not only that, however, but Hayward’s arrival would also fortify the offense.
Hayward more likely off the bench at this stage
The Jazz right now don’t have a lot of great passers, which is something Hayward can be for the team. Now, the move only makes sense if you’re sure the Jazz are a team in contention to push for the playoffs. You’re really not giving up much in a trade, likely just Horton-Tucker, Olynyk, and Fontecchio.
Plus you can likely get back J.T. Thor and a second from the Hornets. So it makes sense to do the move. After all, at 33, Hawyard is still a guy who can still put up per-game stats of 15 points, four rebounds and four assists a night. And that was on a bad Hornets team.
Imagine knowing what both front offices would do!
I like it. A versatile vet. Great fit. Funny for the idiots still booing him!

The shooting of Johnny Juzang deserves some serious attention. He was lights out in Summer League and while it’s unfair to assume he’d transfer that game to the NBA level, it’s still worth noting that guys do develop after they enter the league. Someone like Juzang could be a rotational piece for the Jazz this year, or even a spot starter if given a shot.
:lol
The team gave (https://thejnotes.com/2023/07/22/utah-jazz-rank-athletics-power-rankings/) Micah Potter another two-way contract this season, but after watching him struggle to shoot threes in the Utah Jazz’s last Summer League game, it’s fair to question whether Potter is able to give the Jazz what they need. He’s a solid rebounder but if he can’t score and stretch the court then he lacks the skills needed to warrant minutes ahead of other, better, bigs.
RFA
ESPN lists Talen Horton-Tucker as the Utah Jazz’s backup point guard and backup small forward. He’s got the handles to be a point guard, but he’s about six or seven inches too short for a small forward. The height isn’t why the Jazz should ship him away in a trade, however, it’s the fact he’s not a good scorer. He shot just 42% from the floor, which on its own isn’t bad until you realize he shot 29% from three. You want a 40% shooter from the line, but you’ll take a 35% shooter. Anything under that is just someone who eats up valuable minutes. Horton-Tucker should be a part of some trade package for a better player.
He's got the length for the 3 just not the game. He can score :facepalm

Sure, he’s not the scorer that Sexton is, and he’s not as good of a defender as Kris Dunn is currently, but he’s good enough at producing on offense to at least give him a shot in camp. Bringing him would give the Jazz a good passer and defender while hurting their shooting, but the team has enough shooting to make that sacrifice.

The Jazz need a starting point guard to facilitate the offense. Maybe that can be Collin Sexton, but he’s never had that job before. Maybe it can be Kris Dunn, George, or even Talen Horton-Tucker. The fact it’s hard to say is exactly the issue. Remember, if you have multiple options, you really don’t have any. No one is wondering if Steph Curry will start for Golden State.
Sexton had the jpb last year and with the Cavs. He's the only choice
Then there’s Hendricks, who may be the best of the three, and somehow, the least likely to make an impact this year. Hendricks is now behind John Collins on the depth chart of power forwards. He’s also gotta face stiff competition from Kelly Olynyk, Walker Kessler, Lauri Markkanen, and even his rookie classmate, Sensabaugh.
I can certainly see him in the rotation right away in the Vanderbilt role. By the trade deadline certainly guys will be moved and the young guys will get a look

https://www.deseret.com/2023/8/6/23816225/utah-jazz-mailbag-john-collins-kris-dunn-streaming-service
Most of the questions I received this time around concerned the current Utah Jazz roster, which currently stands at 18 players, including three two-way contracts — Lauri Markkanen, Jordan Clarkson, John Collins, Kelly Olynyk, Walker Kessler, Collin Sexton, Ochai Agbaji, Kris Dunn, Luka Samanic, Talen Horton-Tucker, Simone Fontecchio, Taylor Hendricks, Keyonte George, Brice Sensabaugh, Omer Yurtseven, Johnny Juzang (two-way), Micah Potter (two-way) and Joey Hauser (two-way).
so I guess Potter is signed? Never saw it anywhere!
So, while I don’t expect the Jazz to make any big moves before the 2023-24 season begins, there’s always a chance. Also consider that the NBA could shift significantly before this offseason is over.
Sexton or Talen need to go and eventually Olynyk and Simone and of course The Bum
I believe that on opening day of the 2023-24 season that Dunn will be the Jazz’s best point guard. If it were me coaching the team, independent of a front office and the league at large, I would start Dunn.
best two way player anyway
George is going to need some time to work up to being ready for regular NBA minutes and that might mean he spends some time in the G League or slowly works his way into the Jazz rotation the same way that Agbaji did last season.
hard to imagine him not in the rotation from day 1
So where does does all of this leave Dunn? It depends. If the Jazz start out the season with Horton-Tucker or they decide to just throw George into the fire to see how he reacts, then it could mean that Dunn is coming off the bench.
if they don't trade Sexton or Talen he might be cut
In addition to that, there were also reports of the asking price. That price seemed more outlandish with every report and it was so evident that Collins was available to the rest of the league that the Jazz eventually were able to land him for Gay and second-round pick, a much smaller asking price than had originally been floated.
and a huge trade exception and saved money for the Hawks :facepalm

https://saltcityhoops.com/5-most-intriguing-lineups-for-the-jazz/
If I were to stack rank them, I’d go: Clarkson, Collin Sexton, Agbaji, George, Talen Horton-Tucker, Kris Dunn. Based on that stack rank, you’d think the easy answer would be to just play Sexton at point guard and JC at shooting guard. The concern with that would be ball movement. Sexton has only averaged 3.2 assist per game in his career and only has one season greater than 3 per game. JC had a career year with 4.4 assist last season, but his career average is just 2.7 per game. Both may be better suited being a score-first sixth man off the bench, but I would expect at least one of the two will start, because they are Utah’s best scoring creators off the dribble.
Sexton did a good job running the team last year. He learned a lot from Conley. Clarkson back to the bench(or another team) makes most sense. Sexton/ Agbaji
The Jazz’s most used starting lineup last season lineup featured Mike Conley and Jarred Vanderbilt, who are no longer with the team. The second most used lineup was Horton-Tucker, Agbaji, Markkanen, Olynyk, and Kessler. That lineup played 310 possessions together, and had a +9.8 differential. That said, it seems like Clarkson is bound to start at one of the guard spots, and it’s likely that Olynyk will be swapped out for the newly arrived Collins.
The Bum at the 1?
That brings us to the lineup above. My hope is that Clarkson (with his nice shiny new extension) starts at one guard spot, along with Agbaji, Markkanen, Collins, and Kessler. Outside of JC, who can still hold his own when he wants, defensively that lineup will hold up well with their size, length, and athleticism, anchored with Kessler in the middle. They can also space the floor with high-level shooting at four of those positions, while also putting lot of pressure at and above the rim between JC’s driving and Markkanen, Collins and Kessler’s dunking ability.
3 bigs and a small back court sounds like big problems on D
You have creation off the dribble, on-ball shot creation, spot up shooting, and you still have solid size at every position so they wouldn’t be absolutely terrible on defense. This lineup played a grand total of 28 possessions together last season, roughly the equivalent of playing a single quarter together. That said, the sample results were promising. They had a +13.5 point differential with a 125 Offensive Rating and a 111.5 Defensive Rating.
size at 4 and 5 but not Kessler :facepalm
With no poor three-point shooters on the floor, the Jazz could play five out so Sexton and JC could penetrate the paint at will. Agbaji shot 48 percent on corner threes last season, and Olynyk shot 45 percent. With Markkanen as the ball screener for the two guards, what are you supposed to do as an opposing defense? Not sure that 111.5 defensive rating would hold true, but I do think that offensive rating isn’t far off.
The Bum is poor shooter!
When trying to build a defense-first lineups for the Jazz, you start to realize that they are much more potent on offense. While this lineup would be a very good defensive team, I can’t imagine they would hold up on the other side of the ball. They just wouldn’t have enough 3-point shooting between Dunn (career 31.3%), THT (28%), Hendricks (shot well in college, but need to see it in the NBA), and Kessler (3 total career three-point attempts).
Dunn hit open shots last year. Rather him take an open shot than The Bum throwing up another prayer and brick anysay!
Good luck scoring on them though. In today’s modern NBA, most opposing offenses are looking to use ball movement and switches on defense to find and target the worst defender. Who are you going after with this lineup? At first glance, THT might be viewed as the weakest defender, but he is 6’4″ with a 7’2″ wingspan, and weighs 234 pounds. Maybe you’d go after the rookie, Hendricks? He’s 6’10” with a 7’2″ wingspan, and was widely viewed as one of the top athletes in the draft. Dunn’s defense is the main thing that kept him in the league this long, and Agbaji is looking like one of the better 3-and-D prospects in the league. Kessler may already be a potential Defensive Player of the Year candidate.
force Kessler out of the paint and see if he can defend in space before we make him a DPOY candidate

https://saltcityhoops.com/can-john-collins-make-the-lauri-markkanen-leap-from-last-year/
I wouldn’t expect Collins to have the year Markkanen had last season, primarily because Markkanen is still on this Utah Jazz roster. But it is not hard to envision Collins having a similar re-emergence back into stardom. Behind Markkanen, he and Jordan Clarkson will likely be the next featured offensive scorers. In his 21 point scoring season, Collins attempted close to 15 shots per game. Last season, that number was all the way down to 10. Both Clarkson and Markkanen were at 17 shots per game, and surprisingly in third, Malik Beasley at 12.2. If Hardy can find an effective role for him and Clarkson and Collins split the shot attempts around 14 per game, with improved three-point shooting with a healthy finger, Collins should find success. My prediction? 18 points and 8 rebounds per game, with some of the best “In your face” dunks we’ve ever seen in a Jazz uniform.
only Lauri has put up more per game than Sexton :facepalm

The only way the trade can develop a long-term option is if Olynyk gets traded once again, which is very likely. His contract makes him one of the most likely trade options on the team, and if the Jazz can turn him into a superstar of sorts like a Zach LaVine, or draft capital, then the trade for him will be seen in a much better light.
Can't imagine Ainge wants Lavine but than he hasn't gotten rid of The Bum
The Jazz are in the same boat in that regard. Olynyk didn’t move the needle for the team and is likely to be the answer to an obscure piece of sports trivia more than a component for a championship win.
He started most of the year and didn't move the needle? I'd rather have him than Bojan. Better all around game

The Utah Jazz are going to figure out who their starting point guard is going to be for the 2023-2024 season, sooner rather than later. Right now there are a lot of possibilities for the role. Jordan Clarkson could move over to the position, and give the Jazz a run-and-gun shooter at the spot. They could go with Collin Sexton, a more efficient version of Clarkson but without his track record.
a track record of putting up all star numbers or a track record of being an inefficient gunner and pounder of the ball? :facepalm
Well, not someone who’s going to take shots away from Clarkson, Markkanen, and Collins. And while Collins and Markkanen are far from liabilities on defense, like Clarkson, they’re not exactly prime-Mark Eaton either.

At point guard, we’re taking Kris Dunn at point guard. He’s arguably the best passer of all the guards, and he can play defense. At the shooting guard, we’re going Collin Sexton. He’s not a three-ball shooter like Ochai Agbaji, but he’s more efficient of a scorer than Jordan Clarkson.
Sexton/Dunn might actually make some sense. Dunn is big enough to guard 2's

Gobert recorded his lowest points per game, rebounds per game, and field goal percentage since the 2017-18 season as the on-court fit alongside Karl-Anthony Towns was very awkward. Not to mention, Gobert has also been an awkward fit in the locker room and he punched (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrmi1D6qTvU) teammate Kyle Anderson in a high-magnitude regular season finale versus the Pelicans.
I saw a lot of potential with him and Towns before he got hurt
Representing France in the FIBA World Cup this Summer should help Gobert stay in shape and enter the upcoming season with momentum. He is poised to bounce back in 2023.

https://thejnotes.com/2023/08/08/jazz-regret-trading-donovan-mitchell/
Should the Jazz regret trading Donovan Mitchell?
God no! They got 3 players I'd rather have and the picks. One of the biggest heists ever!
Many wondered if Ainge moved Gobert due to Mitchell and the French center’s previous conflict, but not long after, Mitchell found himself on the market as well. The All-Star found himself in rumors and, at one point, believed he was destined to be a New York Knick (https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10048996-donovan-mitchell-thought-he-was-headed-to-knicks-before-trade-to-cavaliers). Up until the Cleveland Cavaliers swooped in and enticed Ainge, there was a package that would send Mitchell to the Cavaliers (https://www.nba.com/news/donovan-mitchell-traded-to-cavs), ending his era in Utah. In 345 games with the Jazz, Mitchell averaged 23.9 points, 4.5 assists, and 4.2 rebounds.
I'd say he had little choice in moving Gobert. The package was too great to turn down even for a statue
Now, moving forward, it’s fair to look at Utah’s current situation after Mitchell’s career-year in Cleveland, where he averaged 28.3 points per game, and wonder if the Jazz made the right decision. Would the team be closer to contention? How would the roster look today if Mitchell was on it? These are questions we will never know the answer to, but one thing is for certain: Utah landed on its feet a lot sooner than many expected.
Probably better than The Bum though the Bum actually tries on D

Mitchell was never better than Hayward or Deron :facepalm
Gobert's place amongst other Jazz greats is always going to be a point of contention, even though Gobert's ability to anchor an entire defense and deter opponents from even attempting shots at the rim was truly game-changing. Very few players in franchise history have directly impacted winning the way Gobert did.
Very few? Only 2. The statues. 5 is a joke!
The tricky part about Gobert's nine seasons with the Jazz is the four first-round playoff exits the team suffered through, and the blame cast on Gobert for not being able to guard in space and punish defenses for putting much smaller defenders on him at the other end. Gobert's lack of development offensively ultimately capped the ceiling for the Jazz, leading to the eventual rebuild and trade to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
twice they won as the lower seed. Once as the higher seed. They overachieved especially considering they sucked without Gobert and he was the reason they were in the playoffs to beging with. He's one of the best in space. No he can't guard 5 guys at once!

Not only did they lowball the Jazz, but they claimed that not trading Jordan Clarkson was a bad move. Clarkson is likely to be traded if the team struggles, but if the team succeeds, it will be in part due to him.
they should be better than last year despite The Bum
The Jazz admittedly have a lot to prove in 2023-2024 but it should be noted that the team is better today than they were at the end of the prior season, and with a deeper roster to boot. Despite the lingering questions, that alone should elevate them.

With Lauri Markkanen being able to play more minutes at the small forward position and allowing Collins and Hendricks to interchange playing alongside Kessler, the Jazz could improve drastically on both offense and defense. The potential length and two-way approach of Utah’s lineup could be what keeps the team in games next season, and perhaps that’s exactly why Ainge and Hardy constructed the roster the way they did.

Injuries to Clarkson forced some position changes, but it’d be far to say that Markkanen played more small forward for the Jazz than not. After all, Olynyk, Vanderbilt, and Kessler were all far less skilled offensively than Markkanen, so the Jazz moved Markkanen out to the perimeter far more often in those situations.

Before we get into the top three, we have to take a second and look at what the former Enes Kanter, now Freedom, did for the Jazz. While he wasn’t able to live up to the hype of a high draft pick, the 2011 third-overall pick did have a solid NBA career. At least on offense. The defensively challenged Kanter/Freedom played four seasons for the Jazz, most of which he came off the bench for. He averaged nine points and five rebounds per game, and while he wasn’t great on defense, there exists a universe where he and Rudy Gobert became a duel tandem much like the Cavs have with Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen.
he'd be better spotting up for 3. The problem is he was more of a post player. Makes little sense with Gobert as with Favors
He came over from Cleveland (why is it always Cleveland?) in 2018 to help the Jazz finish the year with 48 wins for the season. He then stayed in Utah for the next season (’18-’19), where he had 12 points, and five rebounds but was largely ineffective as a scorer. Still, thanks to his impact on the team, the Jazz won 50 games.
the biggest problem was his 8 3 att. a game
Kyle Korver
Biggest problem was Jerry played him too much and didn't let him fire away from 3. He was doing the mid range curls instead. A waste

How will the rookies perform?
especially the two we haven't seen yet
Who is going to start at point guard?
1 choice as the roster stands Sexton
That still leaves Olynyk, Kessler, Samanic, Potter, Collins, Yurtseven, and Hendricks to fight for three, maybe four slots in the rotation. And if we’re being even more honest, there’s really just one spot up for grabs; as Kessler and Collins are your starters at center and power forward, while Olynyk will be the first big off the bench.
I could see Hendricks off the bench 1st as their Vanderbilt. Samanic or Yurtseven could be in the mix as well I guess
Maybe he could be the next great NBA center. But he’s got to put in the time to develop those skills, and the Jazz has to be willing to trust him with the ball more. Hopefully, a strong outing with Team USA in the FIBA World Cup will help make running plays for him an easier decision to make.
I doubt he's the next great NBA center

If you have a clear and obvious option, there’s never debate. And the Jazz don’t have a clear option.
seems clear to me
So in that regard, yes, George was the right call. And while he may be hurt and probably won’t see a lot of action this season, so was Sensabaugh. The wing depth on the Jazz isn’t great, at least not with true small forwards. Sensabaugh may be a bit slow to play small forward but he’s certainly heavy enough to play power forward, so he’ll find his role eventually.
sounds like they want to change his body. Maybe make him a 2?
Then there’s Hendricks, who may be the best of the three, and somehow, the least likely to make an impact this year. Hendricks is now behind John Collins on the depth chart of power forwards. He’s also gotta face stiff competition from Kelly Olynyk, Walker Kessler, Lauri Markkanen, and even his rookie classmate, Sensabaugh.
I'm guessing he'll be hard to keep off the floor

It’d be fair to say that Kessler is either the best, or one of the two best defensive players on Team USA’s FIBA squad already, and he’s just in his second year as a pro. He’s already seen as a Defensive Player of the Year candidate by some and his impact on the defense will be important.
no argument for him being better than the DPOY :facepalm
Justin Brownlee had a better outing with the Philippine national team in the two games in the World Cup Asia Quafliers, but despite averaging more points (29 to 25), rebounds (8 to 4), field goal and three-point percentages, and a higher efficiency rating, the national team went with Clarkson over Brownlee.

Kessler will need to play hard, and consistently if he wants to prove he’s too much lower than the Top 10. Right now I think it’s fair that former Utah Jazz player Rudy Gobert is ahead of Kessler, but that opinion may change if Kessler comes out of the blocks strong.

https://thejnotes.com/2023/08/10/kris-dunn-starting-at-point-guard-for-the-utah-jazz-would-not-be-a-total-shock/
The Utah Jazz have a quagmire at point guard, dare we say, a conundrum. The team has no less than six players who could end up starting for them at the position this offseason. Granted, with differing odds than the others. Those six men are rookie Keyonte George, veteran two-way guard Kris Dunn, the dynamic scorer part one in Collin Sexton, a physical player in Talen Horton-Tucker (https://thejnotes.com/2023/08/09/talen-horton-tucker-seems-to-enjoy-being-with-the-utah-jazz/), the other dynamic scorer part two (Electric Boogaloo) Jordan Clarkson, and a player who’s on a two-way contract, but isn’t a tjwo-way player with Johnny Juzang,
I guess Juzang couldn't be worse than Clarkson
Sexton is a carbon copy clone of Clarkson, and if he can get an extension with the Jazz, will likely hasten the clubs’ desire to move on from Clarkson and get some young assets back in return. Horton-Tucker is an inefficient scorer, but he’s arguably the most physical two-way player the team has. As for Dunn, no guard passes or defends better than him, but he’s nowhere near the scorer anyone else is.
shorter, faster, can shoot, Sure exactly the same player :facepalm
Then there’s George, an unknown commodity.
He's shown me a lot more than Juzang :lol
So when put in proper context, it’s not fair to say that Dunn starting at the position would be a total shock, as Sports Illustrated claimed (https://www.si.com/nba/jazz/news/jazz-kris-dunn-starting-nba-season-shock). In fact, Dunn is our front-runner to start this season. Yes, Clarkson and Sexton are better scorers, but assuming the starting rotation includes Clarkson (https://thejnotes.com/2023/08/09/jordan-clarkson-breaks-into-the-top-20-of-shooting-guards/), Lauri Markkanen, and John Collins, then you need someone who can be a pass-first player on offense while matching Walker Kessler’s energy on defense. After all, Clarkson, Markkanen, and Collins will lead the team in attempts, so you don’t want another shoot-first guard on the floor with them.
He might be the best choice but I'd be surprised if he's in the rotation
Plus none of them are going to be on the NBA All-Defense team anytime soon, so Dunn’s defense will help Kessler not be the only aggressive defender on the court.
Dunn might be if he starts
But if the idea is to have Clarkson, Markkanen, Collins, and Kessler on the floor to start every game, then Dunn is the guy to go with.
my idea is to have the Bum off the team

https://thejnotes.com/2023/08/10/one-year-later-did-the-utah-jazz-win-the-rudy-gobert-trade-with-the-minnesota-timberwolves/
The sad truth is that the Wolves were not built for defense even before Gobert’s arrival. He excelled in Utah due to the team building a defense that used him correctly, and it showed on a nightly basis that Minnesota did not know how to use Gobert.
Initially but COTM gave all that up for 3's. I'd say the Wolves arguably have more defensive potential than the Jazz did. Don't have a 6'4 PF or little guards who don't even try to guard anyone or a coach that thinks he's smarter than everyone
If those two young men turn into stars and nothing else from this trade develops, those two players could fortify the Jazz for the next 10-15 years. Coupled with the other draft picks that the T-Wolves sent over, plus the players that were also shipped out following the deal, this trade may set the Jazz up for not just the next decade, but the next decades to come.
Will either be able to carry a bad team by themselves?
You trade one starter for two? That’s usually a win. Plus you got Talen Horton-Tucker (https://thejnotes.com/2023/08/09/talen-horton-tucker-seems-to-enjoy-being-with-the-utah-jazz/) in this trade by proxy, and he may be a big chip for you down the line to move as well. The future for the Jazz looks a lot brighter than for the Cavs. The team has five picks to develop into stars, none of which are coming until Donovan Mitchell is likely to be gone from the team. The first pick arrives in Utah in 2025, the first year that Mitchell could take matters into his own hands and leave Cleveland. If he does that, then the Cavs will likely tumble out of playoff contention on account of trading away their depth for Mitchell.
Doubt it. They'll get better when they put someone with size next to Garland that does more than gun
For the Utah Jazz, it’s hard to look at this trade and not gush about how badly they ripped off the Cavaliers. You got five picks and three players for three years of controllability of a player whose biggest knock is that he couldn’t win in the playoffs? Yikes. If I were the Cavs, I never would’ve made the trade in the first place, as guys like Lauri Markkanen and Collin Sexton are more than capable of producing better numbers than Mitchell on his own.
I like Sexton more. He's faster, better shooter. better finisher, more willing passer, plays hard at both ends. Big question now is if he can stay healthy
The Cavs on the other hand, could still earn themselves a good grade if they win the NBA title with Mitchell, or directly from a second Mitchell trade. Until that happens though, it’s hard to give the Cavs a good grade on a trade that crippled their future plans and made their roster less talented in the process. Mitchell may have been the best player of the three traded, but he’s not so much better than Markkanen anymore. The fact that the Cavs had to overpay for an average player to try and replace Markkanen while investing more time and money into Caris LeVert to replace Sexton shows you that this trade was short-sighted.
Lauri is better. Again he does more than just shoot the ball

Part of the reason for Okongwu’s strong season last year was the addition of new head coach Quin Snyder. After the All-Star break, the Hawks parted ways with Nate McMillan and hired Snyder almost immediately after. It was under Snyder that Okongwu began to get up more three-point shots. Since he’s been a head coach in the NBA, Snyder’s teams have been known for their offense. With a full season under Snyder, it’s not a stretch to envision Okongwu’s offense reaching another level this upcoming year. “I like Quin,” Okongwu said. “He’s got a high IQ, he pays attention to detail, he’s fun to play for and I’m excited to play a whole season for him for real.” (https://clutchpoints.com/hawks-news-onyeka-okongwu-ready-for-big-season-with-atlanta-exclusive)

Utah Jazz – Rudy Gobert, #0 Who has the most win shares in Utah Jazz history after Karl Malone and John Stockton? Rudy Gobert.
The French big man spent nine seasons in Salt Lake City. Gobert was a three-time NBA All-Star and three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year while a member of the Jazz.
He played in 611 games in a Jazz Uniform and averaged 12.5 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game.

To be fair, The Athletic’s ranking is based on what they are projecting for the upcoming season, so perhaps Partnow thinks this season will be a step back for Clarkson due to the addition of Collins, and maybe the expected rise in usage from other young players. Or, maybe they are heavily influenced by analytics, which have not always shown Clarkson in the brightest of lights. All thaty said, as someone who has watched nearly every game that Clarkson has played for the Jazz, he is certainly one of the top 125 players in the NBA.

https://www.slcdunk.com/2023/8/25/23842452/which-jersey-numbers-should-actually-be-retired-for-the-utah-jazz
I’ve decided to analyze these debates in regards to the Jazz players. We all agree that Jerry Sloan, Hot Rod Hundley, Frank Laydon, and Larry Miller deserve to be honored for their time with the Jazz. That said, they should all probably be more like Hundley’s, which doesn’t keep a valid jersey number retired. As for the players, I’ll look at a couple of questions. Are there players currently honored that might not deserve it? Are there players that should have their numbers retired but haven’t?
Only be Hot Rod if it was up to me.
Outside of “The Statues,” the other players that stand out in this category are Jeff Hornacek, Mark Eaton, and Thurl Bailey. Hornacek didn’t play as many games for the Jazz as some of the other players on the list, but he was a key contributor to Utah’s most dominant years, and his win totals reflect that. Eaton played the third most games for the Jazz. Bailey played a lot of games and won a lot, too.
None should be in the rafters
Darrell Griffith, Andrei Kirilenko, and Rudy Gobert also made decent contributions here but far beneath the levels of the others mentioned. The big standouts to me are the players with the worst showings in team success. Adrian Dantley and Pete Maravich. Both players have their numbers retired, and their accolades and accomplishments will show why, but they struggled in this category. Maravich’s stats include New Orleans and Utah, as it is the same franchise. Despite his statistical dominance, Maravich never made the playoffs with the Jazz. Those teams were frequent under-performers, and it resulted in a sale of the franchise. Dantley took over as the new star with flashy stats but few wins. He did manage to get the Jazz to the playoffs in some of his last seasons with Utah but never made much of a postseason splash.
Gobert is #3 for the Jazz. It's not close. A,D. is a HOFer that started their playoff run. Maravich also a HOFer. Griffith shouldn't be up there
Retired numbers based purely on team success and longevity:
Definitely: Karl Malone, John Stockton
Likely: Jeff Hornacek, Mark Eaton, Thurl Bailey
Unlikely: Rudy Gobert, Darrell Griffith, Andrei Kirilenko
Definitely not: Adrian Dantley, Pete Maravich, Deron Williams, Donovan Mitchell
Mark Eaton also has an impressive resume with DPOY awards and All-Defense selections, but his one All-Star team is a small number for this group. Deron Williams had an incredible peak for the Jazz, with two All-Star games and two All-NBA team honors, but his lack of longevity with Utah hurts him again. Donovan Mitchell made three All-Star teams with the Jazz and got a Rookie of the Year award, but he was never an All-NBA player for Utah. Andrei Kirilenko made one All-Star game and had a few All-defense selections but didn’t maintain star-level play for long.
Deron was their best player
Retired numbers based purely on accolades:
Definitely: Karl Malone, John Stockton
Likely: Adrian Dantley, Pete Maravich, Rudy Gobert
Unlikely: Mark Eaton, Deron Williams, Donovan Mitchell, Andrei Kirilenko
Definitely not: Jeff Hornacek, Darrell Griffith, Thurl Bailey
got it except I'd probably include Deron
After the two greatest players in Jazz history, it’s a mess. Some players had more playoff success, some had more awards, and some had better stats. Using these three categories, only one player was twice in the “likely” category and never in the “definitely not” category. That player is Rudy Gobert. Gobert checks the boxes of playing enough games, winning enough, racking up accolades, and climbing the statistical leaderboards. Gobert is the third most deserving player to have his jersey retired. Since he’s still playing, it will be a while until we know if he’ll get his jersey up there, but based on these comparisons, he should.
you got it! Should have gotten a statue too
The other players to make the “likely” category at least once include Bailey, Kirilenko, Dantley, Maravich, Hornacek, and Eaton. Each has a case, but not a rock-solid one. Hornacek was the third-best player on the best Jazz teams but never a star. Bailey had the longevity and the statistical ranks but was more of a role player. Kirilenko’s stats are impressive, but his peak was too short. Maravich and Dantley have the accolades but not the wins. Eaton has a little bit of everything but not a lot of any one category.
Dantley took the worst franchise in the league from 30 wins to 45 and the division title to start their long playoff streak :facepalm
That leaves Griffith, Williams, and Mitchell as the only ones not to make it to “likely” in any of the three categories. They are the first cuts. One has to wonder why Griffith’s jersey was retired in the first place. While he was an exciting rookie for the team, he wasn’t a real star at any point in his career, and he never led the team to many wins. Williams and Mitchell were another case. Both were on track to see their jerseys hanging from the top of the Delta Center, but they didn’t have enough time to make it happen.
Griffith put up all star numbers before holding out and never getting his job back as payment. Guess they felt they owed him after that shit? Mitchell will be there I'm sure. Deron should be

And it’s that downfall from Gobert that has everyone happy that the Utah Jazz traded him when they did. After the season he had with the Timberwolves in 2022-2023, and the issues he’s had in the FIBA World Cup, it’s clear that while Gobert is still an NBA starter, he’s no longer an elite player.

Samanic is not some one-note big-man like guys from the 1990s. He’s someone who has good handling for a man his size, and shockingly good court vision. When you give him 25-30 minutes per game, Samanic, while working in the post more nights than not, will average anywhere from 2.5 to 4 assists per game.

This was a bad break for the Jazz. The ’82 draft wasn’t deep and only had three real “prizes” in it, and they went first through third. So the Jazz didn’t have another option. That said, they could’ve gotten far more for Wilkins, like a first-round draft pick.
Heck, even an Atlanta second-rounder may have netted them someone like Doc Rivers in ’83. Say what you will about him as a coach, he was an All-Star caliber player. The lack of foresight in trading away Wilkins will forever be one of the few big mistakes the franchise has made.

Dantley didn’t carry the Jazz to an NBA Championship, so it’s fair to say his trade was limited in its scope. The trades for Gobert and Mitchell not only brought two huge talents to Utah but also will now allow them to shape their destiny over the next decade in any way they see fit.
The franchise might have never won and they likely wouldn't be in Utah without A.D. :facepalm
Dantley’s run with the franchise was spectacular, but when his time with the franchise ended, they were left worse off. That’s not the case with Mitchell and Gobert, at least comparatively. Already Walker Kessler (Gobert trade) and Lauri Markkanen (Mitchell trade) have exceeded anything Dantley brought back in return.
Remains to be seen how much it helps them getting rid of Gobert. They were worse. Jazz got better after A'D. because of Stockton/Malone

The Utah Jazz have signed guard Taevion Kinsey (tay-VEE-on), guard/forward Romeo Langford, and center Nick Ongenda (on-GEN-duh). (https://www.nba.com/jazz/news/utah-jazz-sign-kinsey-langford-and-ongenda) Per team policy, terms of the deals were not released. Kinsey (6-5, 190, Marshall) played five seasons at Marshall (2018-23), appearing in 154 games (130 starts), owning averages of 17.1 points on 50.7 percent from the field, along with 4.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.1 steals in 34.1 minutes per contest and left the school as its all-time leading scorer with 2,641 points. He was named the 2022-23 Sun Belt Player of the Year following his final college season, with averages of 22.1 points, 5.4 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.7 steals in 32 games (all starts), and was also named to the 2022-23 All-Sun Belt First Team. He competed for the Utah entries at 2023 Salt Lake City Summer League and NBA 2K24 Summer League.

If all these guys are officially signed than camp is full barring a last minute trade which I think could happen. I'd guess they won't be officially signed until later when some guys are cut from camp. Could still have at least 3 more Exhibit 10's. Also tells me Potter was never resigned as keeps getting reported despite never seeing anything official and these guys could be fighting for the final two way spot? Langford might not be eligible but obviously with 3 partial/non guarantees there is room to make the roster

He was huge last year in the Euro championships. Arguably the worst player on the Jazz last year outside The Bum of course. Who is sitting so he can play? He only played because of the trades. Samanic looked better

The Bum getting hurt or traded
Last season, after the Jazz traded away Mike Conley, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Malik Beasley, the Jazz finished the season with a 10-17 record. Over a full season that would be about a 30-win pace. During the majority of that stretch though, Jordan Clarkson and Collin Sexton also missed time. With those two guards healthy, coupled with the addition of John Collins and the three rookies, does that add 12-plus wins to last spring’s 30-win pace get the Jazz over .500 for the year?
The Bum sucks and Sexton has yet to show he can stay healthy
An important thing to remember about Collins that is often forgotten is that he will only be turning 26 years old on September 23. This isn’t projecting a 32-year-old to play like his 28-year-old self. John Collins should be entering his prime, and a potential Kessler, Collins, Markkanen front court could pose some major problems for opposing teams. They can have massive size, while still maintaining shooting across four positions with Kessler anchoring the defense.
D has been their problem and I still have a hard time thinking playing big is the answer
I can envision Ochai becoming the souped up version of what Royce O’Neale was for this team. Defend the best wing scorer on the other team, and move off-ball and knock down threes at a high-level on the other side. Ochai is taller than O’Neale, more athletic, and a much better shooter though. If he can become the player he’s capable of being sooner rather than later, he could be a major x-factor in helping the Jazz make the playoffs.
bit early to say he's a better shooter

He has suggested that the Utah Jazz trade Kelly Olynyk and Talen Horton-Tucker for Dinwiddie. Trading Horton-Tucker makes all the sense in the world, but if there’s a way to not trade Olynyk, I think the Jazz should pursue that option.
you've got 2 rookie front court players that are going to need time eventually. Someone will have to go. Not sure how Dinwiddle fits. Need a 2

The team does have holes, but they’re not exactly limited. Look at the point guard position, you could do worse than Jordan Clarkson or Collin Sexton taking over the role. And if you want a more traditional type, then you have Kris Dunn. Not an All-Star caliber crop of guys, but all three could be starters for a majority of the NBA’s teams.
actually hard to imagine you could have a worse pg than one that dribbles and throws up bad shots while not even seeing the other 4 guys on his team :facepalm
Look at two guys who are coming off the bench in Simone Fontecchio and Kelly Olynyk. They were the star or featured players on their respective FIBA World Cup teams. Fontecchio got Team Italy to the quarter-finals and Olynyk allowed Team Canada to use different lineups simply due to his versatility.
Simone was probably their worst player that wasn't The Bum last year
And those are guys who are, in Fontecchio’s case, going to be competing for minutes and Olynyk’s case, going to be coming off the bench possibly as a sixth-man type.
Sexton, The Bum and possibly George are 6th men types not Olynyk
big questions at the 2. Not what I call deep

John Hollinger: Neemias Queta is still two-way eligible and would make sense on a great many rosters (https://*********.com/social/).

No doubt in my mind. He learned a lot from Conley. His health is the concern with him
Yet, the Jazz were only 6-9 in his 15 starts and clearly missed a more traditional offensive initiator. With him simply in rotation, the Jazz were average and a .500 team with a 24-24 win, loss record.
He didn't have as good of a team around him once he was starting. Simone and Talen were on the bench before the trades
Sexton is clearly the best shooter of the Jazz’s options at the point position. He can keep the floor spaced for all the bigs and knows how to get a bucket. With the bigs being a focal point this upcoming season, spacing will be important. If Jordan Clarkson pops off the bench in a 6th man role, Sexton’s shooting will be crucial alongside Ochai Agbaji. If JC starts, the backcourt partnership could be fire and give the Jazz a lethal starting five.
whenever The Bum plays it will be ugly
Yet, Sexton is a score-first guy, going back to his ‘Bama roots and the way he played in Cleveland. John Keeffer of Salt City Hoops (https://saltcityhoops.com/who-should-start-at-point-guard-for-the-jazz/) pointed out that his assist-to-usage rate percentage has been in the bottom 30 percent for his position since entering the NBA. In fact, Keef notes that in the two seasons that Sexton averaged over 20 points per game for the Cavs, their Offensive Rating ranked 26th and 28th in the NBA, and they finished a combined 41-96.
was fine last year. Conley schooled him well
My bet? He starts game one for the 2023-2024 season, but not in 2028.
probably be George after the deadline
