An air force general from the UK once said, "The bomber will always get through" before WW2. He was right - enough bombers ended up overwhelming the defenses of the Axis powers.
How does this quote apply to the mass shooting phenomenon in the US?
Well, the "mass shooter will always get through."
Why?
It's because the cat is already out of the bag - mass shootings have already become an American tradition, a meme so to speak.
Nothing we do can seriously dent the number of mass shootings.
Gun control can probably cut the number of deaths from mass shootings by around 50%, but the determined shooter who is suicidal and wants to take others down with him WILL find a way - because that person is suicidal and everything in his life is dedicated to carrying out his final act.
Massive gun control and confiscation at the federal level would probably cut down mass shootings by around 90%, but that would trigger a constitutional crisis and likely civil unrest that will end up with even more people dying.
Some problems have no solutions in life, and we just have to live with them.
If we could do it all over again, we'd probably all agree that a world with virtually no mass shootings would be the better world.
But we can't do it all over again, short of revolution.
The existing norms and traditions that form a country are its DNA. We're stuck with the problem.
I hate to say it, but when we have colonies on Mars and in space, mass shootings will still happen here on Earth in the US.
Our kids, grandkids, and great-grand kids will face the same problem. For as long as the United States exists in its present form, this will happen.
The only exception in my view...is if the problem gets like 10x worse. If the # of mass shootings goes up by a HUGE amount, then people will start to see the problem as a true emergency. But the "things have to get worse to get better" solution isn't a real solution.
So basically, we just have to live with it. Hope it doesn't happen to you, a loved one or friend...
A truly effective solution to the mass shooting phenomenon can be achieved only through
1. revolution, in which hundreds of thousands may die
2. mass gun confiscation which will lead to civil unrest in which tens of thousands will probably die
3. if the problem gets 10x worse which means thousands would die.
None of these are viable, realistic solutions.
