The top 8 seeds in both conferences are in the playoffs. So what was the point of the play-in?

buddy did you drop your brain somewhere?

the point was not to guarantee a 9th or 10th seed to make the playoffs, but to increase interest and give them a chance.

I’d say the play in has proven a success. It absolutely does make the end of the season games more interesting for several teams and has provided more games teams are actually trying to win. I’m all for additional games with stakes.

Did you not see the intense games between the Lakers-Wolves, OKC-Pelicans, Bulls-Raptors?

The highlights of the Lakers-Wolves game has almost 3 million views on youtube. I'm sure the NBA is loving the attention it garnered.

Yeah and it also gave teams an incentive to win their last game to avoid the play in. See the clippers and GS. The clippers chose to win their last game and face the Suns in the first round rather than fall to the play in.

A lot of the games were really good. Did you not watch?

I get the criticisms that it rewards mediocrity, and the majority of the time the results won't really impact the playoffs, but they provided us with some entertaining games this year, I'm a fan. The one playoff expansion I really don't like is the NFL adding a 7th seed to the playoffs, I don't think that's worked out well at all.

This. I think its' objective is to stop teams from tanking so that they give them incentives to continue competing.

Well, if the objective was to keep teams from tanking, it failed miserably.

It obviously isn’t gonna stop rebuilding teams going after expected superstars like Wemby but it adds hope to lower end potential playoff teams that know they just need to get in. A team like the lakers with injury issues would actually fight for a play in spot.

Dallas is the first time I think a potential play in team tanked at the end.

The fact that this time it was the 8th seeds that made it doesn't mean it is always going to be like that.

I think the warriors were 8th seeds when they lost the play in to Memphis.

I like the NFL's new rule. I always thought it was weird giving two teams in each conference a week off when the playoffs started, just give it to the team who had the best record.

The team that makes it usually sucks and the game is often terrible. The NFL's format of 16 games and 12 playoff teams was honestly perfect to me, the extra game and playoff teams just dilute the product imo.

Pretty sure the clippers finished 8th in the regular season last year and lost both play in games.

They should get rid of it or at the very least make it a one game between the 8th and 9th for the final spot.

Btw the play-ins suck and are inherently unfair, just saying, this is not why they suck.

no it wasnt

it makes the end of the season more interesting BY FAR. the games down the stretch actually matter with more teams competing and less tanking. the actuall play-in games might have lower seeded teams but they are playoff level competitiveness

best thing the NBA did in a while

The west was crazy this season from seeds 6 to 12. The fact that you had the play in meant all these teams had a stake in finishing the season strong. It made the last several weeks of the regular season interesting l, whereas before play in most fans would have tuned out by then until post season started. So yeah the play in has done what it’s supposed to do for the most part and keep fan interest during a time of the season where there usually is little.
