View Full Version : Is Donovan Mitchell a superstar?

I've always been on the fence about him about being a true superstar, but he is a legit scorer/big game player.

He's a 29/5/5 guy in the playoffs over 40 playoff games, so it's not a small sample size. Admittedly most of his games are first/second round where it's a little easier to put up numbers, but still very impressive.

He's had the aesthetic skills to do it.

If Dame can be a superstar then why can't Mitchell, they're basically the same player, more or less, one has a little more range, one is a little more explosive.

This playoffs could be the place to emerge as a superstar with an upset or two.

and a bubble where they lost because the guy he should have been guarding scored almost as much

He was the best player on Utah for many years, I'd say he's a notch below superstar.

Great playoff performer. Not a true superstar in terms of overall impact imo but definitely a big game guy. Xiao boiling with rage as usual since Mitchell shits on his bumbling oaf of a hero.

I'd say D-Mitch is still not a superstar, but without a doubt a strong all star and legit first option of a playoff team.

Garland had 1 assist tonight with no FGA in the 2nd half. I realize Mitch was hot but that can't happen for them to have future success.

one of them will have to go. Only going so far with a small backcourt. If Mitchell played bigger with his length and size maybe but he doesn't

Super star is a player you build around , and he is the MAN

Mitchel is an All-star , team is built and he is a difference maker , but really the MAN.

notch below super star as others have stated

Bumping this.

Still hard to get a true read on D. Mitch. but dude is averaging 28/5/5 across 56 playoff games. He's totally under the radar historically for someone with those raw numbers, but he isn't the most efficient scorer nor does he have eye popping advanced stats.

Regardless he is still a good playoff scorer and usually very clutch as well.

No. He falls into the same category as Tatum, but even less so because he's never won a ring or even been to the Conference Finals yet.

I do think he's overlooked though. He has the killer mentality.

When he has games like last night, hes a superstar the next day.

When the shots arent falling so much and he doesnt impact the game in many other ways... we wait until he has his next big night, and then hes a superstar.

I mean theyve even mentioned on broadcasts how the Cavs took a step forward this year by having Mitchell take a step back. You wont win consistently with him trying to go for 30+ every night, hes not SGA or Luka.

Not tryin to knock the guy, but people will act like games like last night tell the whole story. I dont see it that way.

He’s not consistent enough. When he’s on one of his heaters that he has show he can pull off a decent amount, he can be pretty close. The problem is he will also shoot the team out of games and when his shot isn’t falling he isn’t contributing a whole lot of other things to the outcome.

Well he averages 28ppg, so I'd say his shots are falling often in the playoffs. He did take a step back this year but that's because it's more ideal for modern analytical teams, like the Cavs. Most ball dominant players should take a step back in this current era because floor spacing and 3 point shooting are the meta.

Playoff Averages...

Tatum (114 games): 23.9 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 4.9 APG, 1.1 SPG, 43.9% FG%, 34.4% 3P%, 83.3% FT%

Mitchell (56 games): 28.2PPG, 5.1 RPG, 5.0 APG, 1.3 SPG, 44.2% FG%, 36.3% 3P%, 84.7% FT%

Tatum isn’t a superstar either but he also shares the ball more and rebounds and plays defense.

So when he isn’t scoring he can still contribute in other ways. Mitchell doesn’t do that like Tatum.

Unless the cavs beat boston than it is all just talk. Supposedly he took a step back in the regular season which he hasntbdone before. Is he going to play d, pass the ball and defer to others when the chips are down? Believe it when i see it

Superstar is a high order for me personally. There are only a small handful of those guys in the NBA, and Mitchell doesn't fall into that category.

Has he won consistently in the playoffs?

Has he ever been on an actual contender before this year? The answer is clearly no so of course he hasn't won much.

This year will be telling, the Cavs absolutely make the ECF assuming they remain healthy.

The step back was to give more touches to Mobley. Which has worked out in Mobley's favor, the Cavs at least during the regular season and Mitchell so he's not run down by the playoffs. He's not 100% right now, but he wasn't even playing at 80% in the playoffs last year. He played the whole playoffs on one leg basically.
