View Full Version : When did Global Warming change to Climate Change?

Honest question. Not trolling. Does anyone know when this happened and why? Like what governing or scientific body decided to change the term? And what were the reasons for it?
Climate change is such a broad term that it leads to several misconceptions and outright confusion as to what it means. For example, yesterday was not as warm as today, and tomorrow it's set to be colder. Isn't that considered climate change? Aren't the seasons considered climate change?

I posted this multiple times already, but clowns like you forget facts. I bet there will be another similar thread in a couple months, and I will have to copy/paste this there too.
Global warming as a term wasn't used at all until late 1980s (I think some NASA scientist or director used it for the first time in 1987). Terms changed in approximately this order: climate modification (when they didn't know what was the cause in 1950s/60s but knew something was causing temperatures to rise), climate change, then global warming. Anyways, since 1988, 'climate change' & 'global warming' have been used interchangeably. You make it sound like there was a sudden flip somewhere.
There kind of was a flip on the Republican/conservative side by Bush Republican strategist Frank Luntz, who wanted Republicans to call it climate change with the ulterior motive for ignorant fools like you to then logically rationalize "oh but the climate is always changing!" and to disregard the threat (faux news hosts/analysts since Luntz have also tried to intentionally muddy up 'climate' by conflating it with 'weather'). Again, it's for ignorant people like you to nod, thinking that makes sense because you saw it snow recently.
Republicans in power (including in Congress) have the most to lose here because they have been taking money from fossil fuel companies for decades. Oil lobbyists have been throwing billions to sweep it under the rug. In fact, I believe it was scientists employed by oil companies in 50s/60s who first found out about what co2 from fossil fuels could do (and was doing) to our atmosphere after being burned by factories/vehicles/electricity facilities. They were ordered by their employers to keep it from becoming public knowledge because they knew their bottom lines would be threatened if everyone found out. That went on for couple decades until NASA arrived on the scene and had the famous Congressional hearing in 1988.

blade projecting as usual because he is not sure of his message. He throws out insults and calls us ignorant solely because we don't lap up the same talking points he worships. There was also no need to interject your politics into the discussion.
And the climate is always changing, but if the major concern was global warming, then I'm wondering why not keep the term of global warming versus changing it to a very vague term in "climate change".
Person 1: "Hey man, we should really do something about climate change."
Person 2: "What do you mean?"
Person 1: "You know, the Earth is warming up at an alarming rate."
Person 2: "Ohhh, you mean global warming."

cuz the polar ice caps were expanding several years ago and we were in a mini ice age about 10 years ago as predicted by scientists. After that mini ice age study, it has become climate change.

When they realized that "global warming" didn't sound alarming enough (in fact, it sounds pleasant) and no one was going to give them any money the *fight* it. Hence, climate change. Chicken Little shit.

It was a Republican who wanted the term changed for political reasons. You would know that if you read my post, Chewbecca.

Climate change became a more commonly used term in the 2000s because it better reflected the wide range of effects that rising global temperatures can have on weather patterns, sea levels, ecosystems, etc

That's true too. It's much more than simply the atmosphere heating up.

The term Global Warming was a term far longer than we theatrically believe .... the term was used during the construction of the
Chinese 'great wall'
fast forward and during the construction of another wall 'The great barrier wall' Trump stated "there is no such thing as Global warming ,the democrats and liberals think there is a climate change to scare our country. I am dropping all regulations and constraints on fossil fuels so that we can make America Great Again, and screw the world"
When this statement occurred Trump put the stamp on the phrase CLIMATE CHANGE
