View Full Version : If Wembanyama doesn't reach the same level as David Robinson or Tim Duncan...

In the past, Spurs drafted 2 generational bigs who became legendary players in NBA history.

Should Victor Wembanyama be a underachiver/bust if he doesn't reach the same level as David Robinson or Tim Duncan?

I would say a realistic expectation for success would be Yao Ming.

Wemby is 7-4 and its very unlikely he has a long career.

OP, you have a promising career at ESPN

Regardless of who got the #1 pick, expectations would be through the roof for Wemby. You're talking about a guy who is being called the best prospect in NBA history.

I’m not sure we would remember David Robinson as David Robinson if it weren’t for him playing with Tim Duncan.

Is there a Tim Duncan on the Spurs roster right now for Wemby to play with?

Would we remember Tim Duncan as Tim Duncan if he hadn’t played with Robinson, Tony Parker, Manu, Kwahi Leonard?

Let’s see if the Spurs can find anyone at the level of any of those guys before we go off half cocked, because right now they’re not pairing Wemby with anyone but bums.

To be fair, he has a point. Robinson wouldn't be a 2x champ if Duncan wasn't drafted to the Spurs

Still an MVP, Dream Teamer, 71 point game, quadruple double games, top 50 etc etc

How are we supposed to remember him?

Yeah he'd still easily be an all-time great without Duncan, but he'd also be known as arguably the greatest player to never win a ring.

How do we remember Malone and Barkley? Great players BUT...

Parker was a late first round pick. Ginobili practically the last pick in his draft. Good organizations can find and develop talent in players that other teams overlook. The Spurs have done it before, we'll have to wait to see if they can do it again.

He moves way better though. Less likely to take bad falls.

I find it very difficult to project Wemba.

We will all be a lot wiser when he has 10 games in the NBA.

Because he's much lighter. Yao was slow and heavy but had the strength to play like a traditional C. Wemby is not going to be, nor should he try to be that kind of player. He should be looking more at Anthony Davis. I checked and he's listed at 220lbs so he'll have to bulk up regardless. It'll take some good fortune for him not to get hurt and continue to play like he does. If he stays healthy I imagine his play style will change quite a bit.

I think he will be something like Kevin Durant who is great but there will be better players around.

This. He might become like holmgren but i'd be surprised if he proves to be sturdier than him.
