View Full Version : Is it fair to say Michael Jordan was a more athletic and skilled Jimmy Butler?

Both can't shoot that well. Both excellent defender. Both very strong. Both love the mid-range shot. Both thrive in big moments. Both have that killer instinct.

However, Jordan seems to have quite a significant edge in athletic based things like first step, speed, jump height, etc. And Jordan had a lot more moves than Butler.

What do you think?

As Butler doesn't take many 3's just as Jordan didn't you can narro down shooting to midrange jumpers, layups and dunks.

Jordan having been (as you mentioned) a much better athlete in like every aspect, he is the easy winner on shots near the rim. That's a no brainer. Midrange jumpshots is a closer comparison but Jordan still wins in that department. He was a lot more decisive and had a faster first step as he could jump higher on his shots, MJ had a clear advantage. Plus he had more moves and deadlier moves, a better fadeaway, etc.

The closest area is mindset followed by defense. Butler's approach to the game is similar to that of MJ and the way they try defending the opposing player, get a steal etc. is similar.

So... if you want to say MJ is just a better version of Butler, I guess you can do that but the gap is huge. It's like saying Booker is a bit worse version of Kobe. True to an extent (on offense) but that bit is quite a but. Butler and Jordan are similar attitude-ise and their body typer aren't far apart, while both playing good to great defense and take a relatively low amount of three pointers adjusted to era and contemporaries. I think that"s where this comparison stops.

Miami surrounded Butler with some pretty good 3 points shooters. Kahit walang 3 points shooting si Butler nakaka drive, nakakatira siya sa midrange.

The truth of the matter is that Jimmy Butler is Michael Jordan's son.

Ehh...like a little. Offensively, they are different but there are some similar stuff I guess. Like similar in the basic stuff in operating in the midrange, good at getting fouls, and going to the basket. But they are different in how.

MJ played more off the ball and did more post moves. But Butler and MJ have similar spots with the midrange. MJ was quicker to react to the double team and could split it easier. Butler has the ball and use the screens to take on mismatches more.

They play alike each other on defense than they do offensively. Butler plays the passing lane really well. Very good man-to-man. Very good with help.

And Butler's will and killer instincts are similar.

I think the guys who are the most similar to MJ were Kobe, Kawhi and DeMar DeRozan.

Da fukk, MJ had the GOAT midrange game :facepalm

He didn't rely on the 3pt shot as it wasn't a primary weapon back in his era compared to today but he hit big 3pt shots repeatedly during various title runs.

It's fair to say that Jordan was far better than Lebron ever was.
