Unlikely to breach the debt ceiling but who would be responsible?

Broadly, who is responsible for just adding more debt to the U.S with no reasonable plan to reduce it?

Everyone knows Congress holds the purse strings.

Unless you are poorly educated.

The United States citizens' combination of ignorance, selfishness and apathy coupled with a predatory and or ignorant Congress.

Thanks - interesting. Don't the citizens elect leaders to act in their best interests?

Also, it is interesting because I think the current debt is leading to a terrible depression or a 'slavery' type work system where debt continues to grow. 'own nothing and be happy' style...

What do you think about that? Could we be wrong in trying to reduce debt? Perhaps borrow more and spend more is the new panacea?

Ultimately it's the tax payer who is held responsible... or basically your children. We keep kicking the can to the next generation.

Trump said on his CNN Nazi rally that the US should default because it would show a great deal of independence.

And there are people on this board who will vote for this.

Yes, however, people allegedly believe things based upon perceived short term interest. If their situation changes long term their alleged beliefs will pivot.

We will not reduce the debt because that would require a reduction in spending. The public would never support a reduction in entitlements and the military industrial complex would never allow a massive armed forces draw down.

since we're no longer using leaves to cover our genitals, I highly doubt we'll ever breach the debt ceiling

So if no reduction in spending, then increased taxation or increase debt?

You got it. And despite the lies being sold to the public, the rich already pay way more both in percentage of income and in total dollars than your typical American will in multiple lifetimes. So we can only tax them so much before we have to increases taxes elsewhere or reduce spending. Neither of which are going to happen in any meaningful way, thus increasing the debt. There's a website that projects the US debt into the future and shows you how fast it is ramping up in real time.

Yes thanks.

The young literally are more obsessed with climate change (dubious and unprovable) than economic fundamentals (also uncertain but with reliavble precedents...)

yes, in a perfect world, people wouldn't be coming to their senses, they would be sensing things
