I've always wondered about what immediately changes when a player who has not played in a season of two officially announces retirement. I would assume that once they complete the necessary paperwork whatever pension plan the league has kicks in then. What happens if they are still under contract at the moment they announced their retirement? I believe the Lakers was still paying Luol Deng until around 2021 or 2022.

Hell of a career for Melo! Among the SF's, among the top three most skilled scorers EVER at that spot. In that mix KD and Bird. And NO PERIMETER PLAYER combined skill and physicality like Melo did. I'm not talking about freak athletic ability wise physicality. I'm talking the BULLY BALL type of physicality. And young Melo's athletic ability is hella underrated! And he's among the top 15 GOAT SF's: (no particular order)

Bron
KD
Bird
Doc
Baylor
Barry
Hondo
Kawhi
Pippen
Nique
Pierce
Worthy
Melo

Dantley

Melo's comeback to the Blazers and then the Lakers was sweet after everyone had written him off. He bought himself three more years of solid nba basketball just by learning to be a better spot up three shooter in the time he was out of contract. After that he became way too much of a liability on defense for any shooting to keep him on the court so yeah father time. But that jumper is the the aesthetic goat.

Although he didn't really have any playoff success, he still had a great career. Easily a 1st ballot hall of famer.

>Anthony, who was not in the NBA this season, retires as the No. 9 scorer in league history.

>Only LeBron James, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Dirk Nowitzki, Wilt Chamberlain and Shaquille O'Neal scored more than Anthony

10 time all star. Anyone saying he is 'irrelevant' is missing it. Maybe he hasn't been a top player in several years, but his cumulative performance is hard to debate.

Unlike Lebron, Melo actually went and got an education first

It was a mistake playing for the lakers, he’d still be playing if he went elsewhere..

Nba assholes for blackballing him this season, plenty of teams could have used him off the bench..

Just saw a post on FB noting that on the same day Melo retires, the team that drafted him (Denver) beat the last team he played for (Lakers) to make the finals.
