Yup basically this. People forget Spo is probably top 3 coaches in the game right now and not only in his adjustments, but his philosophy fits this group of players. It really is a pretty old school way of going about things defensively and reminds me of a poormans 2000s Pistons where basically anyone can switch and help. Ironically when Horford was younger, it allowed these Celtics to do the same but he can't anymore and we've seen for a couple years now how Celtics are much more mentally weak than some other teams and just try to overwhelm with talent. You can tell by watching, Heat don't really sweat and thus typically do quite well in the clutch.

To me part of the answer was shown on one play. Tatum gets the ball and Lowry is all over him. He is practically underneath him in guarding position, preventing him from even moving. Tatum tries passing it and hands are in the passing lanes. Celtics got it to someone who chucked up a low percentage shot and missed.

Every Heat player was locked in on the defensive end. The only consistent way to beat Team Defense is to play TEAM offense.

Seriously it's the only consistent way to do it.

If you rely on ISO, playoff defense is just too intense and will cause you to shoot at a low %. The Celtics scored just 84 points in Game 7, shot under 40% FG and ~20% from 3. That's stifling D.

The Celtics were too erratic in the postseason, sometimes playing like a team, sometimes they didn't. The burden on that goes to their coach and their star player Tatum who need to emphasize team play, and Tatum needs to lead by example.

I agree the Heat were playing with great defensive intensity, and played the passing lanes intelligently, but pretending the Celtics didn't play team ball is not what actually happened. They were swinging the ball around trying to break the zone and weren't hitting any shots. Props to Heat for forcing their role players to beat them from 3, but that strategy could've easily backfired.

I don't see how you could watch game 7 and walk away thinking the Celtics lost because they didn't play team ball. That's just false. That's not why they lost.

Blaming a 20 point loss on Tatum tweaking his ankle is disingenuous though. You don't even think Tatum is that guy, and said Butler had a tweaked ankle too, and the Heat missing key role players and having nagging injuries.


Even if the Heat would've lost, there would be no denying how good the Heat role players and this thread would still be completely valid.

Jimmy's leadership and intangibles are the glue to this team. He's been with Miami a long time now and his competitive intensity rubs off on his teammates.

Gabe Vincent, Caleb Martin, Max Strus, and Duncan Robinson all went undrafted. Anybody could've had them.
