ESPN felt bad for ranking Kobe 12th and bumped him up to 9th this time :lol No way is he really 9th tho. 12be for life.

I would move Russell a little lower, and Kobe a little higher.
And Steph is right on the precipice of breaking into that top ten.
Another title might even move Steph a spot or two up into it.

Why has Shaq fallen to fringe top ten these last few years? Idk how ANYONE puts Duncan ahead of Shaq. I swear it's since Kobe's death everyone is bumping Kobe, and in turn, putting Shaq at 10th all time or NOT EVEN top 10.
I could easily take Shaq over Kobe, Duncan, Bird, Hakeem, etc. Also Wilt/Bill are impossible to rank anyways since their stats/accolades can't be produced ever again due to competitive growth in the NBA.
Shaq could easily be ranked 5th all time just off his peak alone.

I would not be surprised if ESPN got a shitload of raving hate mail, mouth-foaming emails, weirdos showing up at headquarters trying to fight pundits, and probably even bomb threats over the 12be ranking. Kobe has an enormous amount of FIERCELY loyal supporters around the world.
Ranking Kobe top 10 is probably strictly a business decision at this point. Not doing so is liable to result in a boycott of their network among Kobe stans. THeyre that fanatical about this shit.

Russell and Wilt are hard to grade
They played in an era before modern basketball
And Russell never had that an offensive game up to par with the rest in the top 10

Shaq was 9th on the 2016 list to Kobe's 12th. Kobe somehow becomes 9th in 2020 posthumously, and Shaq dropped down to 10th. Hakeem was 10th in 2016 and dropped to 12th in 2020.I assume different people voted for the two lists and wanted to play musical chairs with those three in particular ( Oscar is 11th on both lists).

Of course you can rank Bill and Wilt.
They were the best players of their era.
Kareem the best of his era.
Magic/Bird best of their era.
Jordan best of his era.
Duncan/Shaq/Kobe best of their era
Lebron/Steph best of their era.
Likely will be saying Giannis/Jokic of their era.
That's all you can do. Rank em however you want but the ONLY concrete thing is they were the best during their time. Nothing else really matters.

Because this is not some unbiased AI formula that objectively rates these players by their achievements, skill & production. ESPN makes these lists every now & then for clickbait in the off-season to get the people talking. Yes, Kobe was underrated for years and still is when you consider his achievements and some of the players ranked over him on this list. There was a strong anti-Kobe movement in the media for years when he declined.
In 2017 the fan poll had Kobe pretty strongly over over Lebron all-time (60-40) with 90k+ votes on ESPN. Just because 10 ESPN analysts or w.e had Kobe ranked 12th in 2016 doesn't mean that it's some objective fact that we should all adhere to when talking about his legacy. Idk why it's so hard to understand for some people here. If you ask a wide number of NBA fans, Kobe is much higher than his haters & the media would suggest and that's always been the case. The majority does not agree with you.

You're too easy. Drop Kobe's name and you come a'knocking. You say the majority doesn't agree with me as if I made some kind of personal statement about Kobe's ranking, negative or otherwise. I don't give a fukk if Kobe was ranked 9th, 12th or 5th. The point is Kobe retired in 2016. Shaq and Hakeem were long gone. None of them did anything for their rankings to shift between 2016 and 2020 by the same publication unless new data entered the picture to recontextualize, or new people voted and had a different take. Either way, rankings in general are bullshit. What separates the 7th ranked from the 9th from the 12th? Barely anything in most cases, and people like you get triggered when some asshole ranks Kobe 9th because of his/her/their opinion and you think he should be 5th because of yours.
