Very impressive box office haul for little mermaid... according to CNN (https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/29/media/little-mermaid-box-office/index.html), this film almost earned as much this memorial day weekend as the legendary all time classic "Indiana Jones as the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" earned back in 2008

Disney spent about 250m on production and another 150m on promoting this film, and they get ~50% of the box office ticket sales (the other half goes to the theatres)... so the film needs to make at least ~800m to break even, so after an extra long holiday weekend opening its 1/8th of the way to being profitable! totally not broke at all!

What this is about is about two things. One of them is actually making news right now since there is a clip of famed actor Richard Dreyfuss disagreeing with it. Starting in 2024, if a film wants to be considered for an academy award, the film must have new "inclusion standards" with a certain percentage of actors in the film from an underrepresented demographic.

And the other issue is the incessant need to replace already existing characters (for example a White character and replace it with a character of a different race or nationality). All for the sake of diversity and inclusion which doesn't have to be done because there isn't some grand conspiracy to hold these people back.

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, while a bad movie in retrospect, was hugely hyped given that it was the first Indiana Jones movie since the 80s. It was the second highest grossing film of 2008 after only The Dark Knight. TLM is already the 8th highest grossing film of the year after just 4 days.

The movie has done very well. Better than I'm sure you and many others expected.

I'm not going to watch it and don't care (never even seen the original)...but yea.

Similarly, on a much smaller scale, when they built a bigger stadium and chose to name it Arthur Ashe Stadium (at least it's a tennis player) when giants of the game like Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi and John McEnroe (himself a Queens native) were passed over. Ashe won 1 Wimbledon and 1 US Nationals (open only to amateurs) compared to the many, many Grand Slams that each of the others won.

Fast forward to more recent days - Billie Jean King (an American) calling on Australian Open to rename their second showcase court which is named after (Australian) Margaret Court - the holder of a record 66 Grand Slam titles ([record 24] singles, doubles and mixed combined) and Calendar Grand Slam and publicly pressuring current women players NOT to play on that court when scheduled. What business does an American have criticizing Australians about who they name their court after - simply because said player is now a preacher whose faith does not support LGBQT (and whatever comes after these day)?

Billie Jean King is a big proponent of transgenders playing in women's sports. Martina Navratilova (a lesbian) is a strong opponent of transgenders in women's sports and has been blasted by that. Props to that Canadian weightlifting coach who identified as a woman for one day to break the (transgender) record - shows the absurdity of allowing "transgenders" to participate in women's sports. I highly recommend watching the video "What is a Woman?" by Matt Walsh.
