To be honest I dont really trust ratings statistics to be all that accurate either way. Naturally they wont be as high for this series as they would be for marquee matchups, but the definitive numbers that get published? I dont put much stock in it.
40 years ago when there was one television in the home and you could ask one mortgage paying head-of-household to keep track of what they watched each evening with a fair degree of reliability, sure.
But nowadays? Television consumption is so diffuse. Everyone in society has their own device, and most of them are probably not reliable survey respondents anyway. Has anyone here EVER taken a Nielson survey?? I havent. I cant be bothered and why should I?
And I'm not even talking about streaming, this is just about measuring conventional network broadcast viewers. Throw streaming into the mix and how can you possible measure this stuff. Also, how long does someone have to tune in to constitute being a viewer? Again this isnt like watching a 30 minute sitcom in the 80s where you had no other devices and would sit and watch from start to finish. If I watch a few minutes of the first quarter and then play games on my phone before watching the last few possessions in the 4th, does that make me a viewer for ratings purposes?
They have an incentive to make this appear very scientific, because you need to concretely estimate viewer numbers in order to price advertising. But I dont think theres any way to really know how many people are actually watching. They put solid numbers on these things so they can sell the program to sponsors and advertisers... but it's probably way less reliable than they let on.
