I was watching a Scoot Henderson work out and it dawned on me…why do teams need to see a workout of someone who has been in the G league for a year? They send players back and forth. Most of the teams are affiliated with nba teams. What could be left to see? But of course his team is one of those weird ones specifically there for young prospects who didn’t go to college.

I decided to take a look at some of the performances this year, and I couldn’t even believe some of these names.

****ing Pooh Jeter(HOF name by the way) is on the same team as Scoot. Pooh is about to be 40. He’s a developmental coach with the blazers and the assistant GM of the team he plays for.

After all this time and with all the resources available, we can’t get a halfway serious second tier league in America?

The ****ing 40 year old GM is actually playing in games with high lottery picks. Aren’t they supposed to be getting developed? They have them playing near structure less pickup bullshit games.

baseball is deep in the rearview mirror in modern American sports but they support three or four levels of minor leagues.

There are 20 midsized cities I bet could get behind a seriously run second tier league. They have never even tried to make it seem real. Are these players even coming out better than they would be if they went to some Italian second league for a year?

They signed Scoot for a million as a JUNIOR in high school then stick him in a bullshit league?

If they’re down to spend that kinda money get serious about it.

Enterprises that dont produce revenue and rely on subsidy generally arent great examples of functional efficiency.

As long as you’re gonna subsidize it why not at least try to run it well so you aren’t throwing the money away though?

Not like it’s the wnba full of players who will never do anything for the nba. The g league at least in theory is there to help build nba players. Guys like Middleton, Siakam, and Gobert were there. If you’re sending legit young players to it and want future success why are they playing dudes from up the street and barely running offenses?

if you're familiar with baseball they have old guys playing with their top prospects at AAA. You need vets around. Player coaches/GM's/etc. make lots of sense. They can transition into the next phase of their lives. The kids get to play against men. They are close to having an affiliate for every team now. Could be a real minor league then. The league gets better every year as salaries have increased. Another two way spot this year should improve it even more. Another non college option for high school kids along with Australia and Overtime Elite. They like their affiliates near by. In the same city in some cases unlike baseball. Makes a lot of sense as well. What high school player went to Europe successfully? American high school kids don't generally have the skill set to play in Europe despite supposedly being the most skilled players ever.

Yeah it's a fair question I guess.

But who has the impetus to specifically care? The league is entrenched between "we have to scrap hard to avoid going out business" and "this thing has big revenue potential."

It's not gonna make BIG revenue, and the owners arent gonna let it fold. Who in the organization's management really has incentive to care? There's no risk and there's no reward.

Also, you mentioned baseball's minor league system. I believe just recently there was an issue with minor league ball players going on strike, or suing the league, or whatever it was to address what they claimed were basically terrible adjusted wages/conditions for guys trying to make it.

Just the way these things go I suppose. If you're not producing profit and relying on a subsidy... it's hard to expect much I guess.

Kblaze has a point ... before the NBA thinks about going over seas,, they should develop a league to recruit players up.
I have to believe that the NBA was hoping the franchises would carry the financial load , and it isn't happening.

Until it is mandated.

A lot of these G league teams are in locations to actually promote the NBA , but see very little of that as well.
Wish teams were closer to me , so that I could watch live.
