The Ringer’s Bill Simmons is joined by Ryen Russillo and Kevin O’Connor after the Celtics, Grizzlies, and Wizards made a surprise trade that sent Marcus Smart to Memphis and Kristaps Porzingis to Boston. They discuss Porzingis’s fit and future with the Celtics, why the deal makes sense for Memphis, and why Bill is going to miss Marcus.

Celtics just traded a 30/20/70 player for a 50/40/90 player

Some of these trades with self-sabotaging franchises are absurd.

They tilt the league balance so hard.

Nice, this improves the Celtics' defense massively (sarcasm)

It is a good trade for the Celtics on paper I guess, especially when you factor in the picks they got, but it’s just a bummer they gave up Marcus Smart to keep bum ass Jaylen Brown. Smart brings all the toughness and intangibles their two ‘superstars’ lack.

Id have liked rooting for the Celtics more if theyd gotten KP and still kept Smart.

Be glad the Wizards wouldn't take Brogdon's money and a first rounder. Because I'm sure that is what the Celtics were going for. Something like Brogdon/Gallo/First for KP...so they'd keep Smart and get KP...and only lose Brogdon.

I'm assuming the Wizards just don't want any multiyear contracts of real salary going forward...that is what they wanted from the Suns as well. I guess they aren't going to "trust the process" for multiple years and hope to land someone this year in free agency or at least one or two guys next summer. Tyus Jones is really good and only 27...so I guess they could keep him, but I'd imagine a contending team would be willing to give up something real if the Wizards took back some salary, but it looks like they won't.

Celtics are still going to be super scary, but if they had kept Smart instead of Brogdon, it would be even more absurd imo.

Am I the only one that was hoping the Cs go after draymond? They needed grit...

Wait, are we saying that Boston is better off keeping brogdon than smart?

No. For starters Brogdon has health concerns. But if he's right he is the best bench scorer on any contender and White can do a loy off what Smart does. We just arent sure who replaces Smart as a leader.

Why were they so hellbent in getting him in the first place?

I was always under the impression that Horford was co-leader. Realistically though I think Tatum should take that role.

Horford is absolutely a leader but Smart was right there with him. Maybe Tatum can be a vocal leader but a team's best player is not necessarily going to be the leader. We will see.

Brad Stevens fleecing. Now we know why they elevated him from coach. Brogdan is a very good floor general which they should be ecstatic they kept, and Porzingis on load management gives them an unreal ceiling. They just got an All Star talent huge upside guy for nothing. He's injury prone but it seems everybody is nowadays, if you want to win a chip gotta swing for the fences.

What do you mean, for nothing? They lost Smart. I agree this deal is quite good for the Celtics, but Smart is not nothing.

Wednesday’s Kristaps Porzingis trade saga ultimately required the Celtics to manufacture two separate deals to acquire the former Wizard. Along the way I heard from multiple rival teams that were convinced Porziņģis, had he not landed with the Celtics, was poised to receive strong free agent interest from Utah had he elected to decline his $36 million player option for next season before Wednesday’s midnight deadline (https://marcstein.substack.com/).

rather have Kessler. I don't see their 3 big lineup taking them far

I think playing off KP in the post will actually make Tatum and Brown better players. Their totals might go down but their efficiency should go up. Altho Id still trade Brown if I could get anything decent.

And Smart was not only a leader, but the glue guy as well.
