Unfortunately it is difficult to be an independent in many states if you want to vote in primary.

Until 2016, I was an independent too. Sadly my state doesn't allow you to vote in primaries if you are independent. I wasn't even registered to vote in 2012 but I finally registered in 2015 summer. I decided I wanted to vote for Bernie in primary over Hillary (I never really liked Hillary) in 2016. I was forced to declare for the Democrat party in order to vote in primary. I prefer the independent path personally, but my state makes it difficult.

As for your point, there are only two realistic parties. I despise it, but it's what it is. Both parties are corrupt, hawkish/pro-war, pro-corporate, anti-free-speech in their own ways, puppets of corrupt donors, and actively sabotaging progress. We can argue one party is bit less and not equal flavors, but they are both pretty shitty for America. We need a new party to come forth that takes into account the plea of the middle-class because quite frankly neither truly do.
