Scouts definitely know more than fans but even if they didn’t…a ton of scouts were all over Jordan. There were people who thought he was the best player they’d ever seen. Not prospect. Basketball player. Nobody was gonna go over Hakeem but there were jokes about Portland passing on Jordan even on draft day. But it wasn’t so much a player evaluation as a need thing. They felt they needed a center. Now I would say otherwise because they had Klay Thompsons dad who was pretty productive but maybe not what teams then would call a “true” center. He could move and pass a little. Maybe they wanted Bowie at the 5 and him at the 4.

They definitely didn’t need a guard though. John Paxton’s brother Jim who nobody remembers was all nba second team and they had both Drexler and Lever as young guards who became all stars.

Lot easier to pass up a guard when you have 3 who were at least all stars(one a hall of famer).

It wasn’t so much a scouting failure though. Nobody thought Jordan wouldn’t be good but there’s no predicting what he became. Even him being the best guard you ever personally saw….you can’t predict all that happened.

Theres an interesting book called Tip off about the 84 draft I read. Lots of at the moment evaluations. People were all over the place that draft but nobody failed to notice after the Olympic tryouts that Jordan was insane.
