Wilt actually played both ends of the floor during his high scoring years (evident by archive newspapers). Even after Game 7 from 1962 ECF where Wilt scored only 21-22 points comparing to his 50 ppg average in the regular season, but he was praised by Celtics players claiming he had terrific game blocking countless shots and playing his best game of the season. During postseasons he blocked a ton of shots and his opposing centers never shot efficiently against him, and he always dominate the boards.

And Wilt was better than Ben Wallace in every possible category (including FT %). :)

Jordan's biggest advantage is that he didn't have any GOAT expectations placed on him when he entered the league. He was allowed to write his own story and it looks that much better because no one wrote a story for him, he didn't have preset milestones that he had to reach to not be a failure. Similar to someone like Steph on a smaller scale, no one thought Steph would be a top 20 all time player, which he arguably is right now. When the bar is set low it's easy to clear it.

It's the same reason why Wemby is probably going to be seen as a disappointment. Say he had a career like LaMarcus Aldridge, who was a 7 time All-Star and 5x All-NBA, he's going to be seen as a massive failure. That says more about us than it does about him.

Who was MJ compared to? Julius Erving who won 1 title? Yes, so once he won that championship he already surpassed the standard at that position, and he did it before the halfway point in his career. On the other hand, someone like Lebron was compared to Magic and MJ from the beginning, so media set the standard at 5-6 titles right off the bat.

It's weird because ring count wasn't ever a thing before MJ. Magic won 5 but back then people didn't use those rings as an argument for why Magic was better. MJ was better because we have eyes and can see it. I don't know why it became imperative that ring count be the primary reason for declaring a player's greatness.

If someone wants to say MJ was a better player than Lebron I don't argue about that, they are close but MJ edges him on key metrics.
