The U.S. Supreme Court handed down a major ruling on affirmative action Thursday, rejecting the use of race as a factor in college admissions as a violation of the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clause.

In a 6-3 decision, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the majority opinion that, "A benefit to a student who overcame racial discrim*ination, for example, must be tied to that student’s courage and determination."

"Or a benefit to a student whose herit*age or culture motivated him or her to assume a leadership role or attain a particular goal must be tied to that student’s unique ability to contribute to the university. In other words, the student must be treated based on his or her ex*periences as an individual—not on the basis of race," the opinion reads.

"Many universities have for too long done just the oppo*site. And in doing so, they have concluded, wrongly, that the touchstone of an individual’s identity is not challenges bested, skills built, or lessons learned but the color of their skin. Our constitutional history does not tolerate that choice," the opinion states.

Asian families who have been discriminated against because of their stronger work ethic can now rejoice.

Not surprised considering it's conservative majority. However, I don't have an issue with this ruling tbh. I have thought about this before but I ultimately didn't have a position going either ways.

Affirmative action is racist in and of itself. If you want equity, you dont go by your race

Of course Biden is already speaking out against this ruling. I just don't see how one can oppose this. You can't exclude other races to include other races. You can't be racist to solve racism.

The bigger problem and the "cause" for this even to be a subject is the state of K-12 public education. Being stuck in poor schools based on one's zip code is what hurts poor and minority students. Wealthier, white, asian (who emphasize education) students have a choice or seek out alternative options like charter schools. Powerful teachers' union and (their hold on) Dems are strongly opposed to school choice - when that would open competition resulting in better schools and more options for minorities.

Fifteen years ago, Vijay Chokal-Ingam shaved off his straight black hair, trimmed what he calls his “long Indian eyelashes” and started checking off the “black” box for race on his med-school applications.

Before long, the Asian Indian-American was interviewing at Harvard and Columbia, and found himself on wait lists at the University of Pennsylvania, Washington University and Mt. Sinai — despite his relatively mediocre 3.1 GPA and his family’s considerable wealth.

So you know what AA causes? me questioning the credentials of my black doctors. I don't give a shit about coming off as a racist if it's my health on the line, gimme the indian doctor 9/10.

Plus AA only goes one way.

Justice Alito accepted tens of thousands of dollars in lavish vacation gifts from a billionaire who lobbied to cancel the student loan forgiveness.

After the gift, Alito voted to overturn.

This SCOTUS' corruption undercuts its own legitimacy by putting its rulings up for sale.

I'd hazard a guess that using race as a factor did not result in the intended result. What happens when minorities with lesser SAT scores/record go to an Ivy League school alongside those with higher scores, better preparation? They probably struggle and don't do well - they would have been better off going to a "lesser" school and being more at the top end of students.

The solution is to improve K-12 schools so that the preparation is better for minorities by allowing them SCHOOL CHOICE.

Look, I would love for kids to get the help they need earlier in life (k-12) but every help matters. They aren't exactly letting in delinquents at ivy league schools just because they're black. What I do have a problem with is the legacy kids, do we need them? The filthy rich with their parents donating enough to have their names on the wall. I guess that won't change because schools are not gonna turn away money.

Is there a study done on black doctors being bad at their jobs? A qualified doc is a qualified doc regardless of his/her race or religion. Don't get me wrong, indian doctors are great, my parents prefer them for their own reasons, but they don't let black kids ease through med school so I don't know why you wouldn't be OK with a black doctor. I guess it's about preference, and you're entitled to it :lol

I hate to break it to ya, but college would be more boring with no diversity. Colleges prefer to have all races and I'm pretty sure Harvard is finding loopholes because they are the brightest minds in the world yeah? Good for them. I have no problem with less fortunate people given a helping hand.

I guess that won't change because schools are not gonna turn away money. The billionaire class will always be a problem in this country. I'm not saying it like 'oh it's a problem we should ignore it, but there are other fundamental factors we need to delve into before fixing this: wealth disparity, corporate regulations(especially environmentally related ones), and really take another long hard look at he Sherman Act.

Is there a study done on black doctors being bad at their jobs? A qualified doc is a qualified doc regardless of his/her race or religion. During the most recent 2021-2022 medical school application cycle, White matriculants had an average GPA of 3.78 and MCAT of 512.7 and Asian matriculants had an average GPA of 3.79 and MCAT of 514.5. The average Asian matriculant had an MCAT nearly 2 points higher than the average Caucasian. In comparison, Black matriculants had an average GPA of 3.55 and MCAT of 505.9 and Hispanic matriculants averaged a 3.64 GPA and 506.6 MCAT. In several previous years, the disparities in GPA and MCAT scores have been even more pronounced.

For perspective, a 506 on the MCAT is a 65th percentile score and a 515 is a 90th percentile score.

Obviously, schooling isn't everything when it comes to being a doctor, but it's also all you really have to go off of without knowing the person on an intimate level. And no, ivy leagues aren't letting in delinquents, the black students they let in are quality kids. You're giving an asian's spot at Princeton to a black guy who should have gone to Rutgers(a good school in its own right). It drastically affects the difference in their ability to get a job later on, and thus their bottom line. So yes, AA helps hispanics and blacks, but at what cost?

1) Meritocracy. the best isn't getting the best opportunity... when they should.

2) It comes at the cost of hurting asians, who are also minorities subject to racism and other issues.

And I'm not suggesting blacks and hispanics can't make it on their own merit. Arguably the greatest chemist in US history is a Mexican guy. But you're delusional if you think black and hispanics on average put the same emphasis on education as Chinese and Indian families.

I hate to break it to ya, but college would be more boring with no diversity. Colleges prefer to have all races and I'm pretty sure Harvard is finding loopholes because they are the brightest minds in the world yeah? Good for them. I have no problem with less fortunate people given a helping hand.Yeah, I agree. Diversity is awesome. But universities for cultivating talent, and that needs to be first and foremost. You can't just let anyone be a rocket scientist. There are certain jobs only a handful of people in the world can do.
